Science Builds the Bionic Cat

Oscar the cat. His paws cut off in an unfortunate combine harvester accident. But we have rebuilt him. We have the technology.

And soon, this technology could be applied to people! Could you imagine a world where bionic limbs work? Hell, we could end up with automail! Suddenly, that image makes me hate the world a lot less.

Also, that picture of the cat with the bionic legs makes me hate humanity less. He's so adorable...and yet so tech-awesome.

Andy Chalk:
A veterinary surgeon in the U.K. has brought human civilization one step closer to ruin by attaching two bionic limbs to a cat that was injured in a farming accident.

HOW can you say that? The cat was freaking saved.
Stop fearing technology.

Andy Chalk:
What's next for Oscar? Perhaps bionic claws that will allow him to destroy your furniture, maul your dog and kill every bird on the block, better, stronger and faster than ever before. After all, we have the technology; we have the capability.

Once again, stop fearing technology.
And cats already shread your furniture without the use of cybernetics.

I don't think he is really afraid of technology, its just a joke.

I can't seperate such jokes if it is one.
I've spoken with too many technology-scared people <_<

Uhhh . . . I. . . sigh. I thought the entire internet had an understanding when it came to cats and furture overlords.

-----------------------------------------------

I want to imagine the conversation with the vet.

"Is their anything we can do?"

"We can rebuild him. Make him stronger, faster, more agile."

I believe it's part of the running joke that we will be murdered by skynet/a robot uprising/cyborgs in the inevitible robot uprising that comes with all these advances in technology, it's like that in the movies!

(noticing your above post, i found it highly unlikely a journalist for a GAMING AND TECHNOLOGY site is going to be a technophobe.)

YAY, Kitty can walk again. YAY For science... but when the machines take over, Bionic Cat might the first thing to turn :(

so what's next??

Bionic dog??? Bionic tigers???

This actually put a tear to my eye. Seeing that cat walk around again. Wow...

Soon there will be bionic dogs chasing bionic cats through your yard on rocket boosters.
Like I says, tomorrow was yesterday!

I notice they skirt around the issue of "how much did this cost".

To whom does this cat belong? Bill Gates? If so what was it doing sleeping in a farmer's field...

Still, it is awesome. Just makes me wonder about the details. I just lost my cat of 18 years earlier this year. No amount of bionics could have staved off old age. Just makes me wonder if some day this might be viable for the pets of ordinary people should the need arise.

At any rate now that we have a bionic supercat, perhaps it can be used to stave off the impending catnarok and prevent the end of the world. :P

A bionic cat I'm waiting until they make the bionic bear that's when I'll think about this technology.

I can haz sooper kitteh?

Seriously though, give the thing some laser-eyes, and I'm set. I will worship that crippled cat for as long as I live.

Deus Ex: Feline Revolution.

.. nice story though and, as a cat lover, I heartily approve.

Next week he gets the rocket booster up grade.

heres hoping it continues to stay stable, I'm suprised they were able to get the skin grafting to take and such...but as you can see he doesn't walk normal in the least. I feel sorry for the cat....I'm between putting it out of its misery and hoping its able to lead a normal life now.

so many variables from the grafts being rejected eventually, to him being completely uncomfortable with the pressures the metal objects put on his body...ect that all point to it would have been better to save it the pain.

But heres hoping.

I'm happy the cat can live normally now. The implications for future human prosthetics are a nice bonus, but I'm quite a fan of cats, so...

Bionic Catmando.

There has got to be a lolcat made out this

Greyfox105:
Augmented... cat...
Two things I love, combined.
I... I want one...
And if it helps to better adapt the technology to human patients...
I want my fake limbs, already ;~;

you do realize that when we are able to get neural interfaces put in, chances are cats will already have them.

a new age of the Internet Cat Video will have begun.

My god, the lol catz potential alone...

Awesome. Although I'd prefer to see a human instead.

Also...

...he was clobbered by a combine...

Those damn cat-hating bastards!

Well, bionic limbs do "work".

Sure, we don't have any hand/arm/eye prosthesis that surpass the biological versions... yet, but there IS that runner with bionic legs who is able to reach inhuman speeds and is banned from competition because of that. He's a world record holder for running 100, 200 and 400 meters, and he got no legs.

This guy.

As a transhumanist and big supporter of body enhancements, I support!

This is clearly the first step in technological upgrades in which will make cats the supreme overlords of the universe. Just you wait!

..

Serious though, that is pretty amazing. I feel bad for the cat though for the original situation. :/

I seen this in the paper yesterday.

I feel sorry for the poor guy, losing his back legs to a combine harvester sounds awfull!

But glad he was lucky enough to get a second chance.

Will you be the first of the Denton family?

And on to my human air conditioning unit expirament!

The Six Million Dollar Cat!

I eagerly await to see him do something heroic.

Something to do with Dues Ex?
If so, never played the games, and don't know much about them. But they could be interesting, may need to look into them...
Also, anything for some lovely augmentics...

This is one of those things that truly brings nature and technology together. This Is Amazing.

Found a video of him walking

he seems in very good health, just like a normal cat

EDIT: Ooh god i think Oscar should be great full! he could of ended up like this monstrosity!

How does a cat get "a little bit mauled" from a combine harvester... I would have thought that a combine harvester would be the end for a cat.

:o WHAT IS THIS BLASPHEMY!? You (may) enjoy it. Try dis nao!

Either way, I'll take a cyberbrain or some eyes more than anything. Basically anything to speed mental faculties and repair my eyesight.

I think I can see what the DLC for Deus EX will be...

A cat with minigun legs and a jet pack.

Now THATS the future.

Anyone else feel like chopping off their arm for a robotic one...in time...

And EPIC WIN for the cat there that is quite AWESOME.

Sebenko:
Poor cat.

Have you seen a combine harvester? Used to scare me shitless as a kid.

Got my head stuck in one when I was four. Don't ask.

OT:

WE CAN REBUILD HIM, WE HAVE TECHNOLOGY

Spacemike:
Poor thing, I wonder what the cat thinks about the whole process and if he realizes that his owners hooked him up with some next gen prosthetics.

i bet he's happy to be walking again
