Dating Sim Girls Dump Pirates Pages 1 2 3 4 5 6 NEXT
![]() Pirates of wildly popular DS dating sim LovePlus+ received an unpleasant surprise when their in-game girlfriends dumped them ... for being pirates. Last September, I said something along the lines of "I love creative DRM." Not the painful, irritating DRM that makes it harder for legitimate owners to play the game like limited installs, but little catches in the game that trip up pirates. LovePlus+, the "special edition" of the very popular DS dating sim LovePlus, has creative DRM. Released in Japan last week, it was quickly ripped and uploaded to the internet - but there was a catch. According to posters on massively anonymous message boards 4chan and its Japanese equivalent 2ch, people with pirated copies can't get the girls to ever return their affections, no matter what they do.
What makes this all the more satisfying is that, since LovePlus+ is a DS game, it's harder to circumvent this sort of copy protection. PC pirates could just download a secondary crack or patch for this kind of thing, but it'll take more time for the ROM itself to be hacked to remove this most insidious and unrelenting DRM. It'll eventually be cracked, but in the meantime the lovestruck pirates must face a terrible choice: Either they pay real money to get their virtual girlfriends, or they stay lonely until the girls can be patched. Holy Fricking BRILLIANT! Give the man who thought this idea up a cookie, he certainly deserves it.
Hey, I'm smiling. That's pretty funny. Ubisoft, has your DRM made anyone smile? Fuck no.
YES! Why can't people have much more creative DRM like others do? Ubisoft, take notes. Calumon: Dating sims... Jack needs on...MMMMPHFHFH!!! Jack: I'M WITH A GIRL RIGHT NOW CALUMON!
That is possibly the most awesome pirate deterrent ever, buggerin' up the dating, haha
That's almost as awesome as the Arkham Asylum gimped Batman DRM. Or the Earthbound, massive enemy spawn + final boss freeze and save game delete DRM. I don't think anything is going to beat that one.
Best Anti-Pirate method since Earthbound. Earthbound deleting your save infornt of the final boss is brutal but this.... This is something else.
Heh, that's brilliant. I love those kinds of DRM, we need more of it! Seriously though, who pirates a dating sim? Hell, who plays dating sims?
Awesome. Creative DRM for the win
Well, that's what they get for PIRATING a DATING SIM.
Yay creative DMR. This is much better than forceing you to matain a connect to some ones severs.
Ha, win is win. More companies need to do this. You hear me Ubisoft? Instead of having someone have to remain connected to the net, have a sub hunter hit them with depth charges constantly. Have Ezio miss the hay bale and face plant into the ground. Have some creativity.
Brilliant. Ubisoft take note (although they won't because Ubisoft never listen to anybody).
...wow. Dating sims always confuse me. Why don't they just do what every other sad and lonely male does and search up some porn? Quicker (in most cases) and requires less effort (again, in most cases). Regardless, I must applaud the genius who came up with this. Next thing you know, Mass Effect will have scenes in which a Krogan jumps you just before you start getting jiggy, then proceeds to get jiggy with you instead.
Pure. Win. | |
This is brilliant. | |
Pirating a dating sim? Sad! Brilliant use of creative DRM there though. Ubisoft, take note.
I could call the RSPCD on you, you know. Anyway, since you're on this site posting, I'm more inclined to believe Calumon here... ;) As far as the topic is concerned, I think DRM like this is definitely the way forward. I said it before, during the Arkham Asylum stuff, and I'm saying it here. Thing is, DRM will always get cracked, so there's no point worrying about making 'uncrackable' DRM. Just like with cryptography, there's no such thing as unbreakable. All we can do is make DRM as difficult to crack as possible. But developers put too much effort on that to the point where it makes it harder for legitimate gamers and not the pirates. Like with Ubisoft's policy. So seeing something like this is a breath of fresh air, and funny to boot. And it follows the most basic rule of DRM too, which is also the most important. Punish the pirates, without hurting the proper gamers.
The guy who made it must've been like "ahahaha this'll fuck with those lifeless otaku bastards for a few months!".
Holy macaroni, this has to be the most creative and win-filled DRM ever! Give that company a medal or a cookie or something for inventing the most creative DRM, and let them lecture Ubisoft for a couple of days! =D
See, in Assassin's Creed 2, they could have had it so when you reach the mountains and have to avoid the Borgia troops in the coach chase, have wheels fall off the coach on pirated copies. So that part could be unplayable, and pirates can't progress. Or stop the increase of health and hidden blade upgrades when you find Codex Pages. Or have it so the allied factions are enemies instead. Something like that would have worked, and been much more useful in stopping the pirates. And maybe could have lasted a bit longer too...
Props to Konami. | |
Yeah, seriously. Considering how many excellent gaming franchises Japan has, pirating a dating sim just seems like a complete waste of time. -_-
That's fucking GENIUS. BRILLIANT. I can't say anything more bu than that I love that DRM. It's fuckin' classic. Japan really gained +1000 kudos points once again from me!
Yes! This is what we need. DRM that punishes pirates, doesn't inconvenience players, and is hilarious. Also, as Funk said, the fact that it's DS really fucks people over. Please developers, take note.
I dunno... having a game crash on me and then having my save at the end of the game destroyed would ruin my day. This? Meh.
Agreed! That's a brilliant idea. I how interesting would it be if CODMW had an anti piracy measure that changed the story so everybody died in the nuke blast? Or, in Mass Effect, your ship got a "flat tire" and you couldn't fix it no matter what you did because "nobody knows how to work a jack"? Or, in RDR, you're horses kept suddenly dying when you hop on.
That is an epic, and novel way to deal with em! I love it! Break there spirits!
I know dating sims are for total loser. Crazy Japanese. Well I'm off to play Dragon Age, Oh Alister *romantic sigh* he's so sweet and funny.
Now that's DRM I can get behind. Bravo LovePlus+ devs. Good show.
Damn right, who needs dating sims when I can blue alien side-boob in Mass Effect? Thats what real men do.
actually, yes. everytime someone posts "OMG UBISOFT DRM SUX!" or something along those lines, I just have to: OT: I cant figure out what is more sad, the fact that you pirate a DATING SIM GAMEor the fact that people are trying to find a way around this DRM. I dont know whether to laugh at humanity or cry.
This is easily the best thing I've heard all day. Absolutely hilarious.
Heh, it will get worked around eventually, no doubt. Still - this is definately an improvement from the developers. Primarily because it indicates at least a hint of humor as opposed to the typically draconian and nebulous DRM schemes. Moar of this I say!
It's way cooler to earn the respects of the hawties when you can slaughter vast herds of baddies.
