Ten Years Later, Classic Shooter MDK2 Returns

Interplay's hit shooter is returning to PCs and consoles ten years after it was first released.

Remember MDK2? That really fun shooter developed by a fledgling developer known as BioWare and released by Interplay? You know, that game where you played as a janitor with a sniper rifle, a six-armed dog, and a bat$#!+ crazy mad scientist? Well, guess what? It's coming to the Wii and PCs in HD.

Late last week, Interplay announced that the game was being revamped for a winter release on WiiWare, while MDK2 HD will arrive on PCs at an unspecified date afterwards. No development studio has been named to handle the game's revamp. That said, the game will be sold for the PC by Beamdog (a digital distribution service), but the distributor will apparently have some involvement with the re-release's development.

"MDK2 was a great title to work on and we're happy to have some of the original team working on these new versions" said Trent Oster, co-founder of Beamdog, when the game was announced. It should be noted that Oster was a co-founder of BioWare, too, and MDK2 was one of the first games that BioWare developed.

Interplay's re-emergence after its near-death experience in 2005 has been a slow affair, but the publisher's strategy seems to be relying on a lot of nostalgia and goodwill from older gamers. It's not a bad idea, but it seems a bit risky: Aside from Fallout and Baldur's Gate, there aren't too many household names in the publisher's catalog. That said, I certainly have some fond memories of playing MDK2 when I should have been doing homework, so I can't say that I'm not looking forward to this hi-def re-release.

If you're curious about MDK2 or its predecessor, you can pick the original versions up on Steam (thanks The_root_of_all_evil!).

Never played the sequel but loved the first game, it was insane. So big ups to Interplay, though maybe an arcade/psn release also?

I thought Shiny (Earthworm Jim devs) made this? Someone please enlighten me.

Oh, man I totally forgot all about MDK2.

I should play it again. I have it somewhere.

Shiny made the first MDK. BioWare made the second one.

BEST GAME EVAR! Definetly do want.

I don't need luck. I have SCIENCE!

Cracking game, and actually tough.

Haha! Awesome!

But wait, isn't MDK2 already on Steam?

I liked the first more but MDK2 was pretty good, except the prt with the dog...everything else was great. And the music was GREAT
I'd love to have it on my Wii with motion controls

Holy hell. What a blast from the past!

I used to play this all the time on Dreamcast! Playing as Max was so much fun.

I was just looking this up a few weeks ago hoping that something new had come of it. Thanks for the post.

Along with the first one. Didn't even know they had it.

Holy shit, that was made by Bioware?! How the hell did this information manage to escape my notice for so long?

Anyway, good news. Might pick that up when it's released. Always good to see the classics get a revival.

It´s cosnole. Singular. You had me excited for a second. I want an arcade or 360 version.

I always loved mdk2, i still got the cd lying around somewhere, but I never knew bioware made it.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS xD

Edit: Oh wait... what the hell is Beamdog? I don't want no Beamdog :/

Wow... I have this for Dreamcast, although the console stopped working years ago. I do remember it being extremely hard though. And really unique-looking.

More games need four-armed dogs and radioactive toast.

Making me feel so old! Love the games, and, glad to see they are making a revival!

Oh wow, no kidding. Both MDK games were fantastic and I'd honestly forgotten that Bioware did the second one.

Fantastic news! Just yesterday, I was thinking about reinstalling MDK2 and play it for the umpteenth time, but now I think I'll wait for the HD version instead.

I only wish they would give the first game the same treatment...

I hated that game it was so crap... but thats just my POV.

One question:

When and how much?

Sometime this winter, no other info is available right now.

It's OK, I hated Avatar (the film). We're all allowed to dislike stuff.

Sweet! I played that game ages ago, and I could never remember what it was called.

Now I don't have any reason to pass that one. I only played the demo a long time ago and I already knew how much ass it kicked.

Incidentally, I've played MDK2 just a few months ago. It's a blast. It reminded me of the good old days of good funny games. Not the gritty brainwashed 'meh' stuff of today.

The sad part is, while MDK2 is really good, it was just below average at its time. Today it truly shines with its humour and style, but then again quite fails with some other aspects, like difficulty and tediousness at some points.

But, a HD remake? Well OK, it could use some graphical boost, but what the f* is with the remakes recently? How about a MDK3 for f*s sake? Or something else NEW and GOOD?

I played on the good 'ol PS2, and it was awesome until the fucking jetpack puzzle.

Never got past that shit.

Oh my God, that's awesome.

I loved this game as a kid and was I think the first PS2 game I ever played.

I will be buying this again.

now way. I played the hell out of MDK 1 but never played the second I will now though

Shiny made the first MDK. BioWare made the second one.

My god. It's like Elvis and Michael Jackson collaborating on a Frank Sinatra duet album.

PS: This is supposed to be an OMGWTFBBQ AWESOME!! thing.

EDIT: Never played MDK or MDK2. Are they like Armed and Dangerous at all?
