Chad Kroeger Changes His Mind in Nickelback Revenge

Get ready to rock out with your iPhone out in Nickelback Revenge, the new version of Tap Tap Revenge featuring the group that famously blamed music games like Guitar Hero for the decline of the classic rock-and-roll band.

The release of a rhythm game for the iPhone isn't something we'd normally take notice of, but Nickelback Revenge is special. Not just because it's based on the biggest band to power out of the Canadian rock scene since Helix but because it was only a year or so ago that frontman Chad Kroeger was blaming the runaway popularity of music games for a declining interest in actually making music.

"Kids: Start rock bands," he said back in November of '08. "Set down the Guitar Hero, learn how to play an actual guitar and start a band, because it's hard to find more bands to put a solid rock-and-roll package together, to get out there."

But Kroeger is singing a bit of a different tune today. "The combination of our music and Tapulous' gameplay is very cool," he said. "We're excited to give our fans a fun, interactive way to experience our music."

Nickelback Revenge will feature "engaging Nickelback graphics and content" along with 11 of the band's biggest hits and the opportunity to win prizes by beating the group at its own game. A Bluetooth "battle mode" also lets players duke it out in point-by-point brawls for rock superstardom.

This isn't actually the band's first foray into the realm of music games; a Nickelback six-pack was released for Rock Band last week. But seeing Kroeger and co. do such a complete about-face in a press release makes Nickelback Revenge a lot more fun. This, Chad, is how I remind you of some of the stupid things you probably wish you hadn't said.

An interesting clear example of an Sell Out. ^.^

Way to stand up for your beliefs!

And you sold out for something that isn't even likely to make much money anyway.

So was that "I wanna be a rockstar" song of theirs.

We're against this!
You could make money.
We love this!

Sell-out is a term that gets tossed around a lot these days. I can safely say that Nickleback are indeed sell-outs.

I don't see how it's selling out, he never had any artistic integrity in the first place!

Anyway, good for Nickelback. The only reason they're doing this is because they know there's no chance in hell that there's going to be a Nickelback: Rock Band anytime soon.

Seriously though, what sane person would pay 10 quid for Nickelback tracks in rock band?

The thing here is that i just know them briefly, and that i still can absolutely clear see what an sell out this is.

Its astonishing. If i were a university student i would write about this. ^.^

Nickelback has hits?

The answer is yes, that Pickle has more fans than Nickleback. So, I'm guessing Activision's next step is Pickle Hero? A real hit with the ladies.

I think there is a difference between a game like Tap Tap Revenge and Guitar Hero though. Tap Tap Revenge is more meant to be played while on the go and you just have a few minutes to play, while Guitar Hero has to be played at home, where you can actually play instruments. I don't really see it as a sell out.

Clear case of money talking, what a sell out, either stick to your principles or keep your freaking mouth shut.

I'm wondering if each song in the game will use the same series of taps, since all the actual songs use the same chords and progressions. Sounds like a pretty boring game to me.

It's absolutely amazing how people's opinions and steadfast beliefs are shattered when a dollar bill is flashed in their faces.

It's those little ironic snipes that make these well worth reading. ;)

Ahahahaha... Pickleback.

But somehow, I can't see this going to the top of the app store.

Damn you nickelback, I hate you now, well I mean that I like you less.
It's getting there. ;(

I feel the same, I mean I disagree with him on his stance about music games (i know people personally who have taken to learning after guitar hero) but at least I could respect his opinion.

I would have liked to him change his opinion before bringing out a game, that would have been nice.

Just staple his mouth shut in future.

You know, they do have one or two decent songs, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to like even those.

I actually don't think Nickelback's music is all that bad. Some of it is kinda catchy.

"Nickelback" thinks that "classic rock and roll bands" are dying is funny to me. Because you can't get more modern-day generic than nickelback. Does that mean they're bad? Not really. It means they're generic.

I consider classic rock late "Beatles" "Led Zeppelin" "Pink Floyd" "Rolling Stones" "The Who" "CCR" you know, those guys. And the fact that Nickelback is even associating themselves with classics like that, is humorous.

And here I always thought the decline of the classic rock-and-roll band was Nickelback's fault...

I know people like to hate on Nickehlback, but I actually like some of their music on the radio...

Certainly...unique ill say. Well, I have to admit didnt see anything like this coming

There's a Nickelback game coming out now? Oh, the INTERNET's going to love this.

They are excited to obtain our money through this app. Enough for the cyncism.

I hope they manage what they are aiming for, still a bit of vague for me personally but you have to work for it.

I hate these kinds of games, Guitar Hero/Rockband are just NOT something for me. Jamming on some buttons pretending I am an elevated Rock Hero Demigod!

Wow. That's a lot of smack talk from a completely derivative rock band. I don't see race car drivers insulting Gran Tourismo fans, saying 'put down the damn controller and learn to drive a real car!'. I don't expect much in the way grey matter from this band but perhaps they'd better learn the definition of 'GAME'.

What a dick head, seriously.

Sorry off topic i just wanted to comment on your new avatar. Everytime i see that picture i hate my goverment alittle bit more that i already did.

But back on topic. Who liked nickelback in the fisrt place there lyrics are shallow and sound like they were written by a 12 year old.

sorry i realized that my comment about nickelback seemed kinda of trollish after i posted that seeing as you like themm

Chad Kroeger just can't win. damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. People should cut him some slack.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Nickleback!

TsunamiWombat:

Agreed. I don't see what's so terribly godawful about the band, personally. I'm just not a fan of some of their more explicit songs, like, uh. S.E.X.

Anyway I would be interested in this game, but I don't have an iAnything, so yeah. This looks like more of a pick-up-and-play than a longer, more engrossing thing like GH, though, so I can cut them a bit on the media turnaround.
