Sega Cancels AvP Console Patches

Fans are up in arms over a recent announcement by Sega that planned updates for the console versions of Aliens vs. Predator that would have brought some much-needed multiplayer fixes to the game have been canceled.

Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator hasn't exactly been burning up the charts since it was released in February, with lackluster Metacritic scores of 64, 65 and 68 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. That may be why Sega appears to be abandoning ship on the game; barely a week after the release of the Bughunt Map Pack DLC, a message posted by a Sega forum administrator claims that plans for future updates to the console versions of the game have been killed.

"I've just received a mail this AM regarding patches for the console versions of AVP and I regret to inform everyone that these have sadly been scrapped," the admin, using the name "Clumsyorchid," wrote. "I had previously made a claim that these were coming and at the time, this was very much on the table. For the console community, I apologize, as I know there are many features and updates that you'd like to see. I'll keep fighting internally for this to happen, but until I hear otherwise, there will not be a console patch for either Xbox or PS3."

The reaction, as you might expect, hasn't been entirely positive. The console versions are apparently plagued by numerous multiplayer issues, including excessively long wait times to access ranked matches, the need to play ranked games in order to level up and unlock content, incorrectly applied XP and problems with team balancing.

Making matters worse in the eyes of some is the fact that the PC version of the game has already been patched to a vastly improved state and similar fixes for consoles had been promised. Furthermore, Clumsyorchid said in a later post that only the console updates were confirmed as killed, suggesting that support for the PC version may continue. "I have heard nothing on PC patches and would not assume there will be any changes unless stated otherwise," he wrote.

Shortly after the launch of Aliens vs. Predator, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley said he was "delighted" with the game's performance on the U.K. sales charts and claimed to be in discussions with Sega about a sequel. I think it's safe to say at this point that the likelihood of a follow-up has been reduced somewhat.

The game wasn't good so we didn't get good sales. And because it didn't get good sales we are not going to patch it to make it better. I see an endless loop...

They have really fucked up this game havn't they, i was hopeing that AVP would bring back the old fun i had when i was young but with its lack of a server list this game has lost-out on being a good game. I'm glad i have the PC version(I think)

Mmmm, but didn't the console version sold out more than the PC? But whatever...

Ok, now I'm mad.

I actually loved AVP's multiplayer, but I really wished that they patched up the bugs and issues. Now that its canceled I'll have to go back and wait five minutes just to find a match that will just end up as a 3 on 1 match.

Its a terrible game anyway, even if they fixed the multiplayer, there would be noone on the servers to play with.

Because not fixxing a buggy game is a sure fire way to get positive publicity for a mediocre game...

Seriously, stuff like this pisses me off. Its a matter of courtesy: we invested money into your product, dont sell us something thats half broken. And if its half broken, FIX IT. Thats how you keep credibility... Seeing as how this is Sega though... *glares at every sonic game since 3* Not suprising...

TEAM CONSUMER CONFIDENCE HO!

Whoever took the decision to this is an utter cretin who deserves mutilation with a wrench. I say this as a PC gamer who hated AvP, and as a student at a business college.

Mainly as the latter though.

Moronic developers release moronic game and then release DLC instead of patching it.

To think, one developer thought this game could get GOTY.

So SEGA you are chickening out? I have never played this game, but just like GSC and Valve have shown us, you should try and fix problems with your games! Yeah it will cost a little money, but think - someday people may actually see your hard work fixing it, and thats something Metacritic
scores CANT do. Thats gonna be good reputation and good news for the fans, but whatever continue being stupid metacritic shallow wimps. (im sorry if the last part is offensive, but thats how I view things. You helped making this, now fix your problems and maybe you will be respected)

Yeah but a console patch costs alot of money because you have to pay microsoft and sony to verify it etc.
Thats why pc games pretty much always get more and smaller patches.

Seriously? I didn't knew that. So another advantage of the PC over consoles, but I feel somewhat sorry for the console people who did enjoyed this game.

Not clever, Sega. Not clever. You stated a few years back somewhere you were focusing on being the 'biggest games publisher in the world' but that's never going to happen if you treat your paying customers like this.

Anyway, I thought the multiplayer was fun. Guess I was in the minority.

Charcharo:
but just like GSC and Valve

i hate to call you out on this cause the stalker series is properly one of my favourite game series of all time but GSC dont really fix their games to a state comparable to valves, they still have problems and such that are usually left for the community to fix. but of course the circumstances of valve and GSC are quite diffrent.

It's a no-brainer. The game is terrible and flawed, it has no single charm to support the title like STALKER did. That one was awesome.

Sorry for those who bought the game and are literally shafted.

Yeah but see the difference between Clear Sky version 1.5.10 and 1.5.0
To be fair I think they gave up because of CkyRP and the work on Call of Pripyat. Seriously they would not be able to fix it more than SkyRP.
And I still get many errors on Half-life 2 after their engine update, but its preogressively getting better and better, so no problem

I recall them doing the exact same thing with Chromehounds (or was it another game? Correct me if I'm wrong). Then they pulled the plug on its multiplayer. I wouldn't be surprised if Sega killed this game the same way.

Thats not important, Im sure someone liked it. As I said I havent played it, because my PC is not strong enough (although next week that will change...)

The problem is, they like it but they are still at a severe disadvantage and basically utilize a broken multiplayer [ Console ]

It's one of the many reasons people keep a PC handy, for mods and other stuff. Microsoft is quite a bitch with their patch policy.

Still waiting on Colonial Marines here! Sega if you're gonna hold Gearbox back forever and ever AT LEAST let WayForward release the DS version which looks pretty good n ready.

No amount of patching would make that game any good.

Well yeah, but does sega tolerate mods? I mean the company that made the best looking videogame (until Crysis 2) and one of the best this year (4A games) said there wont be any mods for Metro 2033.

I ordered that game a few days ago, thinking that the issues will eventually get patched. Ugh

If this is how Sega treats their community, I won't be buying any of their games.

All I have to say is:

The Orange Box.

At least Sega have the balls to admit they won't be patching their games.

Actually, didn't Gabe Newell say that the Valve-updates will be intergrated with the PlayStation soon? Meaning that they were able to patch the PS3 games and the PC games at the same time

Hey, Sega. It's nice to see PC gamers being treated better than console gamers. But I don't think just treating them like shit is the right way to do it.

Zhukov:

It wouldn't take much to get the MP to be serviceable, but the single player will always be pretty crap.

It was a mediocre game through and through and was probably by biggest disappointment of the year. I used to play a lot of AVP2, and seeing this game come out so bleh was just sad.

Thats very good news! Now if you could also play with us I would be happy.

Quoted For Absolute Truth!

(Haven't played this game, have no interest in playing this game, and don't know what bug they're supposed to fix.)

Why didn't they just ship a finished game in the first place? If the game has bugs and problems, they should have caught in testing. And if not, they have a responsibility to the customers to fix it. You when you sell a game, you're implicitly promising the consumer that your product works and will do everything it advertises properly. If you don't fix major bugs, then you're a liar and a fraud.

Also, why don't game developers WANT their games to be as good as they possibly can be? Whatever happened to love of craftsmanship?

Well...that sucks. No love for the console apparantly...that isnt fair in any comment of the word...

I'm glad I sold this now. But jesus, it was such a bad game that I traded it in after 3 months and only got a £6 return on it. Assassin's creed 2 fetched £10 after 7 months, dammit.

Although I can feel your pain ( I really do ) usually its us PC users that get this shit. Ofcourse its better when everyone is happy, but we PC users take the shit almost every other tome! Even when IT MAY ACTUALLY IMPROVE THE REVENUE (MW2)!

Drauden:

Yep using Steamworks but I doubt it will effect anything released before Portal 2 since the PS3 orange box was done by EA

Biggest waste of $65 ever. And I got the PC version.

More proof that its better to get the PC version of any given game.
