Tiger Woods Sex Scandal Sinks Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Tiger Woods' chronic inability to keep it in his pants may be a bigger problem than EA expected as the new PGA Tour 11 has suffered a "particularly catastrophic" drop-off in sales.

A lot of high-profile (and high-paying) sponsors abandoned golfer Tiger Woods in the wake of his infamous sex scandal, but not EA Sports. Peter Moore stood by his man, saying in early January, "Regardless of what's happening in his personal life... Tiger Woods is still one of the greatest athletes in history." 2009 sales figures appeared to make that decision look smart; Moore said later that same month that the PGA Tour franchise suffered "no degradation of sales" and that "overall franchise sales for calendar year '09 were better than '08."

Calendar year '10, however, isn't looking nearly as rosy. The newest iteration of the game, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, has suffered a precipitous 68 percent decline in year-over-year sales since being released in June, with the Wii version down a "particularly catastrophic" 86 percent, according to Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz.

Much of the loss is attributable to the fact that the 2010 edition of the game shipped with the Wii MotionPlus, but Creutz also pointed to Woods himself as a big part of the problem and, even worse, suggested that the damage may be beyond repair. "We are concerned that Woods' scandal woes may have permanently damaged the sales potential of what we believe to be EA's third most important sports franchise, behind Madden and FIFA," he wrote in an investors note.

Could this be the beginning of the end for Tiger Woods and EA Sports? Things are tough all over, as Creutz noted; Skate 3 is down 40 percent compared to its predecessor and Green Day: Rock Band doesn't seem to be living up to its hype either. But Tiger Woods is a known quantity, a "go-to guy" that EA Sports should be able to rely on to help keep the ship afloat. Sales will go up and sales will go down, but an 86 percent drop on a motion-controlled platform that's basically tailor-made for golfing games? There's just no way to put a good spin on that.

Could one of the reasons that the sales have dropped off be that we don't need yearly releases of a golf game? This "sport" doesn't even have the excuse of having updated rosters that mean anything.

It would be nice to think that the buying public finally wised up, wouldn't it? I just don't know that I'm that optimistic.

Surely they could have just added a "Hot Coffee" mod? Worked for Rockstar.

What a tragedy.

I really don't understand the appeal of golf games.

Put Phil Mickelson on the cover and just call it "PGA Tour Same As Last Year With Minor Changes". Problem solved.

Oh what, you know as well as I do that's EA's strategy and they still get away with it in a way that would make Street Fighter II era Capcom fly into a jealous berserker rage.

Although, it might be the fact that golf games have lost their shine?

EA deserves it. I hope they trip on a piece of dog poo.

As for tiger woods: Keep up the good work!

Guuh?

68 fucking percent? That's...pretty damn big.

I'd like to think that it was people finally realizing that they don't need to get a new sports game every bloody year, but the truth is most likely that people are offended about him doing the beast with a billion backs a little too often. God, it's amazing what'll instantly change public opinion on people.

Well, if they had included the features that South Park had led us to believe would be in the game, I'm sure more people would have bought it.

Meh I don't play the Golf Games so it doens't matter to me, as long as NHL '11 comes out without a hitch I'm a happy man

So the titles that are struglling are PGA 11, Skate 3 and ANOTHER rockband game? Maybe its simply the fact that people are tired of buying the same thing repeatedly and you need some new IP's, as risky as that is. If you realy want to play a golf game your not going to be put off my the fact that he cheated on his wife, I couldn't care less.

So, in summary, Tiger Woods new reputation caused his game to make less money. Well, I don't think anyone could have seen this one com-wait.....WHAT? My god. This just in, folks...In a truly shocking development, scientists have just discovered that water.....IS WET.

Sales are 86 percent down? What's that, like, 5 people?

They should try a "Tiger Woods Scandal '09" instead, that could improve their sales!

and that has to do with golfing how?
(if there was a sex scandal subplot i would be pleased)

Or maybe because Tiger Woods is now really really shit at golf. And was even before the scandal.

Regardless, someone at EA should reeeeally have seen this coming.

Hahaha... How on earth did they not see this coming? I know I did.

Meh, golf games weren't that good anyways, and they have basically rehashing the same game over and over.

*NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM*
Mmmmmm... Tragedy.
Seriously how hard is it to keep your pants on dude?

But we need those updated games that change absolutely nothing! If I can't have the latest edition I might go into a panic educed coma.

Well didn't Madden also take a hit over the last year? I think the "scandal" (which is none of our business in the first place) has less to do with this and more to do with people just being frugal. It gets harder and harder to justify buying the same game year after year and pass on the more unique games coming out.

I'm sure once he gets back on form the sales will pick up. I don't condone what he did, but I think the media blew it way out of proportion.

I would say that the actual gameplay is probably more to do with the drop in sales.. The 360/PS3 version of game was not anywhere as good as last year's version. I hated the new one and sent it back to gamefly (don't buy sport games that come out EVERY year, just stupid).

I am sure a small amount of people actually cared enough about the scandal to prevent picking up the latest version but Come on, we are talking Gamers here.. do we REALLY give a crap about Tiger Woods personal life? What other golf game are you going to get if what he did does bother you?

Yes EA, I'm sure that's the reason no-one is buying your "released annually, barely changed, full price game"

I choose to believe the sales drop is because of Online Pass.
(even though I highly doubt it is)

From everything I've heard, this is a shame. This is the best golf game yet, and I even had a grand time with the demo.

Well, they could always replace him with another well known golfer.

Oh wait...

sport games? why buy those wheres theres the outdoors...right outdoors? :D

(although i would love to get skate 3....if i hadnt traded my ps3 for a bass guitar)

I really dont see why it would affect his games so much...a game does not link to what he did...I mean, sure it has his name on it...but, ah well.

I dont play sports games anyway, so, god knows what goes through the heads of people who do

Stop thinking my thoughts before I do.. it's rude.

Man.. I do not understand people like Tiger Woods.. him AND Jesse James both. Either one of them it was a serious case of going out for a stepped on McDonald's hamburger off the sidewalk when you've got prime rib done perfectly at home.

Not surprising, really. It's like making a game about Michael Jackson after his trial. No one would want to buy it.

I'm not 100% sure, but didn't they drop features from the previous year without adding any to take their place? If that is what happened, it's no wonder people said "screw this" and just picked up a used or clearance priced copy of '10 instead of getting a butchered game.

They are blaming tiger for a bunch of game defects.

I personally liked it because I've NEVER played a golf game. (Ok I did once on Sega but that was ages ago).

Most folks on the forums are pissy. Courses are broken (your ball is hit from WAY from where you land it on some courses), the DLC doesn't even have the right pars for holes, the DLC is super expensive. The item shop is geared towards making you pay for the equipment with real money (on top of buying the game) instead of earning it in game as you would have expected a year or two ago.

Those are some of the complaints I've seen. I had a good run with it and I got it for free (thanks amazon) so I personally don't have any real complaints.

The fact that people have become so vindictive against tiger woods for having a penis is beyond me. I'm still not sure how any of the stuff that has been revealed matters a hot damn to the average person, he's a golfer, that should be the only part of his life that interests people.

I figure most of it is people who have cheated themselves just trying to feel better about it by bashing on a famous guy who did. The numbers of people bitching about tiger does nicely fit in with the estimates of infidelity in the US.

I think the quote I'm looking for (not to caudle my own groin) is something I used back when Evangelical after Evangelical got caught being gay while spouting virile anti gay rhetoric. "We above all else will fight hardest against the things we ourselves are most ashamed of."

So yeah, the game is selling poorly but I think they might want to saddle up and look at the pages and pages of complaints on their own forums and how 0 of them are about Tiger being in the game :P.

Again, I liked it, I'm just referencing the forums. I ended up plopping by there when I was on the 18th hole and my ball froze in the hole (after an EAGLE :() and never went in. I held down fast forward for a good 30 minutes before giving up (sat a book on the button...I'm not THAT devoted).

Oh wait...

They are going to replace him with Rory, they already added the kid to the cover.

Correlation =! causation.

Just because Tiger is having personal troubles doesn't mean that those are the reasons that an ELEVENTH iteration of a game bearing his name is declining in sales. I tend do believe it's more that "11" thing, similar to the reasons that people don't want to buy another single-group-rockband expansion.

We are still in a recession. In those cases people are somewhat more careful with their money and the annual golf game would probably be the first one to go. Especially considering people probably have a couple already. In a genre where there can virtually be no innovation, not getting it one year probably won't be so bad.

They are really pretty fun. Its just you against yourself and the wind really, and getting good at it is pretty fun.

Also, I'm betting the slump in sales has at least SOMETHING to do with the fact Tiger Woods '10 and Tiger Woods '11 are 99% the exact same game.
