Japanese Fallout: New Vegas Ads Hate On JRPGs

image

A group of Japanese protesters anticipating Fallout: New Vegas aren't happy with the typical JRPG anymore.

JRPGs used to be king of the roost, and in sales some of them still are, but the genre is often considered by fans and developers alike to be repetitive and somewhat stagnant. This is reflected in a recent humorous advertisement for Fallout: New Vegas in Japan, which questions why JRPGs have to be the way they sometimes are.

The ad features eight protesters holding signs questioning various typical aspects of Japanese RPGs, and boy do they look pissed. Translated by Andriasang, one sign reads: "What's the point of playing again if there's no change to the story." Another angrily asks: "When did games become something that you watch?"

A third protester believes "a game where you just follow the scenario is like living life on rails," while a fourth says "it would be nice if the main character had a mission aside from just wiping out evil." All of these comments have direct ties to the gameplay and storyline of Final Fantasy XIII, the latest entry in one of the world's most popular JRPG series that was released in Japan in December 2009 and everywhere else in March 2010.

The ad of course offers a solution to these woes by making sure everyone knows that Obsidian Entertainment's Fallout: New Vegas is coming out later this year (Nov. 4 in Japan, Oct. 19 in the U.S., Oct. 22 in Europe). New Vegas is an extension of the open-world, choice-filled gameplay Fallout has always been always known for, but that was recently expanded and brought back into public consciousness with Bethesda's Fallout 3. The message here is clear: If you're sick of JRPGs, western RPGs that let you decide whether you want to annihilate mounds of super mutants or not are your solution.

Well, you don't complain that FPS's don't change there anything, why complain that JRPGs don't? At least they try. Not that I don't like fallout of course, but this is stupid.

oh, wow. i guess that means we should buy fallout now. you know, because that game is perfect.

That was sick, I mean wow.

But they will play the dragon quest games, ZING.

wow... really? this is stupid.

I don't see how this will turn out well in the end.

The irony, of course, is that Fallout 3 at least didn't have much in the way of REAL choices.

Everyone seem to consider this advert a case of trolling. But seriously, they're just taking the piss. Those who are tired of JRPG's will see this and think "aha, yeah, I agree. Say, that game look pretty cool".

It might seem a bit daft, but it's an effective grab for attention.

Although, I bet that somewhere right now there is at least one person complaining about how much better JRPG's are than everything else because they're apprently more "creative" and how Fallout has flaws and problems, while defending the aspects of JRPG's that people consider a bit iffy.

But seriously guys, we all know about the Fallout games by now, and that they have flaws, and that many like them and many dislike them. Saying that developers are genuinely badmouthing JRPG's and are intending to be taken seriously with it is just missing the bloody point.

Mark my words, this will not cause any real hullabaloo. A few overzealous JRPG obsessives might start a facebook group about it or something that we can all laugh at together, JRPG fans and non-fans alike, and then we'll be happier knowing that this has brought us all closer together as we skip joyfully down the road to harmony and love, while we all respect each others tastes in games.

Oh god, here comes the revenge of the JRPG fans. They will end you.

Seriously though, bad, bad fucking move right there, man. I'm not a huge JRPG fan, I haven't played many, so it doesn't offend me, but I can see how it would offend others, and if there's one thing I've learned about the more hardcore JRPG players, and Japanophiles in general, they're bloody scary when they get angry en masse.

If this becomes well known, they might actually lose a considerable amount of sales due to this.

Actually though, as Booze Zombie said, it might actually just be the Japanese sense of humour, and it probably sounds a lot more insulting to Westerners than it does actual Japanese JRPG fans.

Ha, ha, ha!

I think this might work for the Japanese sense of humour, I could be wrong, but they seem to like spite-filled sarcasm and parody.

And Fallout: New Vegas is an ambassador of innovation or something?

i do love RPG's, both W and J, however they both are rife with problems. JRPG's have the problem that they are all virtually the same (with the exception of the Tales of games, but they are starting to look kind of genericy too) and Western RPG's have the problem that they are all trying to tell Lord of The Rings all over again. Sometimes with minorly varrying themes but only minorly.

No kidding. RPGs seem to be the ones pushing the envelope trying to evolve. Granted not every one is genius but at least they are trying.

here's a question for fallout, "Why can't you send in the robot at the end?"

Mr. Data predicts shitstorms over Japan in the near future...

hahahahahh awesome.
i used to be waaaaaay in to JRPG... heck even bad roms that were not in english.
i think i got sick of them around final fantasy 7... i cant even tell you how much i hate that game.
not saying fallout is gonna rock... but i will say the old fallout games... 1&2&tactics... are some of my all time fav games. frankly this fallout may be horrible.....haha just like fallout 3 ahaha
i realised i dont like bethesda games.... i just like the mods... ahahah
great post Tom.. love your avatar... now that was a JRPG i loved

I concur. Not only is it stupid, I think it is a bit depressing.

That is awesome.

*Yawn* Companies are becoming professional trolls like yahtzee. No surprise there.

Yes i see the hardcore fans of jrpgs getting very upset over this.

Fallout 3 wasn't that great ill borrow or rent this before i make my final judgement to buy or not.

This looks pretty funny, if a tiny bit pointless.
It get's the attention of anyone who notices it, so it furfills its purpose.

hahah or the fact by the end game your PC can TAKE IT and not die..... drove me insane when i jsut died.... i was not even rad sick! thank god for mods

The irony of all this is that Fallout: NV is less of an RPG and more of an FPS, a genre that Japan has never really cared for.

Gsmoove:
here's a question for fallout, "Why can't you send in the robot at the end?"

because fallout 3 was developed by utter idiots who had nothing to do with fallout in the first place.

Anyone who thinks this will offend people in Japan are cracked. This is probably the only way that Fallout: New Vegas will sell in Japan.

Yeah, like he ^^^ said.

how is it not an rpg? fallout 3 was just a console-ized run and gun. fallout new vegas has way more RPG elements than fallout 3 ever did and actually is more rpg than bethesda's games.

I play the odd JRPG... It's more akin to sitting down with a (somewhat mental) book. But Fallout 3... Fallout 3 is up there with my all time favourites.

Joke or not, I'm getting tired of this war between JRPGS and WRPGS - it's like Console Wars: The Next Chapter.

As long as I'm having fun playing the game, I could care less where it comes from.

This ad is obviously culturally based and intended for Asian audiences, so us Westerners might interpret it differently. While I think it is not the right kind of advertising tactic to callout and rag on another game genre in order to promote your own game, it did make me chuckle a bit...I got tired of JRPG's over a decade ago and Final Fantasy VIII was the last one I played. Frankly, from looking at the Final Fantasies and other JRPG's released since, I think I only missed out on a lot of forgettable games with craptastic character design..but that's just me hehe.

Fallen-Angel Risen-Demon:

Er, people DO complain that FPS's aren't changing. How have you missed the oceans of people bitching about the endless sea of space-marines and the like?

Though at least FPSs have multiplayer modes to make up abit for there lack of newness, and some are different, like TF2.

Man, that advertisement is pretty spot-on. Final Fantasy XIII WAS shit.

...oh what? It was talking about JRPGs in general?

...eh. I can't argue. Outside of the Shin Megami Tensei games, I can't remember a JRPG that came out in the last five years that gave me any sort of control over the plot, characters, etc.

I understand that this is sort of an accepted norm of the genre, but come on. FFXIII is like the premier example of how JRPGs hate the player, the concept of fun, and the concept of interactive gameplay.

They are paid models.. paid to pretend to be protesting WRPGs, and were paid with advanced copies of Dragon quest IX

Now thats a very intresting way to advertise ones games...I wonder what kinda backlash that will have

Doug:
snip for space

I know but they don't do nearly as much recently. Also Bioshock tries too.

wow I wasn't expecting this at all let's just hope the game is good enough for japan or else it'll be the japnese equivalent daikatana

i think japanaese are proud of their unique rpg style, and they will hold their breath until their face turns blue and pass out before ever accepting a WRPG as an equal.

the comments on andriasang were insightfull:
From COSIGN: Lets be clear here. This ad was designed by Japanese people, not Bethesda. It is intended to be shocking. Probably because Fallout is such an unknown game anyway. You need something big to turn heads. They're trying to capture the imagination of a few lone rebels residing in Tokyo. And there sure aren't many of them.

i have to agree here; japanese gaming culture is not the type where a game like this will proliferate, and i predict failure.
