Erotic Role-Play Police to Patrol World of Warcraft

Following complaints, Blizzard will soon start policing a notorious hang out for erotic role-players in World of Warcraft.

The Lion's Pride Inn in Goldshire on the Moon Guard server has something of a reputation in World of Warcraft, and whether it's a good or bad one rather depends upon your opinion of saucy public chat and strippers. As you can imagine, it's not to everyone's tastes, and after one complaint too many, Blizzard has said it will start patrolling the area to make sure people play by the rules.

The final straw seems to have been a complaint from a father who had found his son investigating the inn. After seeing what he described as "appalling and beyond offensive" activity, he cancelled his son's account, and then posted about his displeasure on the WoW forums. He said that while he regretted having to punish his son for something that wasn't his fault, he didn't want him exposed to that kind of content.

A Blizzard representative responded, saying that this was not the first time Goldshire on Moon Guard had been brought to Blizzard's attention. The rep said that while it was impossible to have someone watching all the time, the customer support team would regularly patrol the area and take appropriate action against those who weren't following the rules. The rep made it clear however, that only public forms of communication would be monitored, as well as unsolicited whispers. What consenting players chose to get up to in party or guild chat, the rep said, was up to them.

The complaints must have been numerous and severe to warrant it, but the idea that WoW essentially has its own vice squad now is so strange that it's almost funny. It's not all that surprising that Blizzard wants to curtail this kind of behaviour though, as World of Warcraft, and indeed all MMOGs, lives and dies by its community, and public cyber-sex is a pretty good way of getting people riled.

This is beyond hilarious...

Well it's about damn time.

Man, I laughed hard.

That place put me off my free-trial.

SEX POLICE
DA-NA-NA-NA-NA-NA

Don't they have, like, private rooms or something for that?

As someone who did play of Roleplayer servers in the past this is hardly anything new to me. Goldshire and the Lions Pride Inn especially are given a wide berth by anyone who valued they're sanity.

That happened to me in I think Northshire, I think, and it was disturbing and very sad.

OK, that's brilliant. I kind of like humanity's tendency in this area (I say humanity as a general because it really does seem to be), whenever we get a new type of communication technology seemingly the first thing we do is figure out how to get sexual thrills out of it.

Or a real life? to have sex -.-
At least blizzard is doing something about it

THe problem is, I am sure they will just find somewhere else for it

and is this not why the esrb labels games with the warning that game rating may not reflect online play?

and are not most online games labeled teen?

way too many young children playing wow period, parents should monitor their kids and tell them to go outside and get some exercise, not stick them world of warcraft and not expect some harsh language and borderline stupid moronic behavior out of the communities.

hell most raid chat is rated pg or pg-13 in your typical guild. then we got any number of utube videos of kids in wow acting like either complete morons or propositioning any female that gets on vent. kids should not be playing these games period.

Wow, that dad's a little bit of a loser isn't he? It's not like you can actually take all your clothes off to reveal your privates or anything. That's reserved for Age Of Conan.

didn't think there would be a /b/ in WoW...oh well...time for the cyber police...

'It was a read that would have made a vice cop blush'

It´s only on rpg realms, right? Still want to level a char without clothes on and without dying once. Record so far was lvl47, got killed by an ally :/

I used to play on this server, but as soon as I leveled up enough to go to the deadmines, i never ever ever came back.

If they take away my blood elf stripper rogue I'm going to be soooo mad.

I suppose there must have been a lot of complaints for this to happen, so I guess it's fair enough.

ERP does not belong in WoW, and I'm all for this. And the statement "impossible to have someone watching all the time" is absolutely false. Now it's up to the real roleplayers to get in there and bring quality RP back to Goldshire.

This would be so funny if it were in a TV series revolving around WOW.

Other than that, glad Blizzard is doing something about it.

By all that is holy...

Honestly why for the love of God is this necessary. Imagine if a bunch of aliens were to tap into our communications and see this? I think I've just lost all faith in our species.

I wish my account wasn't canceled so I could go check this out. Sounds friggin' hilarious.

I don't see the problem! I mean sure the fact that they're strippers etc is "bad" but was it not the "sons" fault for going on that server and then not leaving, and nothing bad really happens does it?!
Meh i'm sure they'll move their "activities" else where.

I've never understood ERP in MMOs.

Take that shit to second life, imo.

It isn't just "stripping".
ERP tends to involve more than that.
Having come across some ERPers in games like CoH, it's really taken to a creepy level.

Blizzard could solve this a bit easier by simply making a new set of underpants and bras that were less revealing (like those found in KOTOR 1 on Mission Vao for example were perfect) and would as such at least properly mitigate these sorts of complaints or problems by saying they did all they could.

But oh wait...that's right...they won't do that, not after modelling Night Elves and such as if they had one hand down their pants the whole time. So instead their PR department has to have the 'cybor police' on the job rather than things like roleplayer harrassment or such that might be far more common or important.

I really hope we hear more on this topic, just to see how often people will forget the #1 rule that the internet as a whole has more than enough porn to expose any kid to it inadvertently or by accident. And things like cybering in WoW, in existance or not, will not change that level of exposure by much in the end.

True, but kids are sponges for new info. And when everyone in the room is cursing and acting racist then that kid might start learning a few dozen curse words and think that being a jerk is cool. That kind of behavior is hard to change once a kid learned it.

That is so pathetic it's unreal.

I recently went to Lion's Pride on my own server. There were plenty of people naked around the place, that's for sure.

The fact that I was there as Horde to maim and kill might have added to my immense satisfaction.

Thing is though, they don't enforce actual RP on RP servers, this is even stopping RP on an RP server, it's backwards.

What constitutes an "unsolicited whisper"? Does this expand to "oh, we're checking all whispers, just in case"?

I don't play any more, but I want to know.

Hope they check out the Blood Elf starting area too. And the Deeprun Tram.

I came across a few on my non-RP realm back when I played. Only one was "publicly" doing so via the emote function, the rest were private but judging by how the characters were positioned, I'd say it was pretty clear what was going on.

One would assume it's just that - a naughty whisper that was unasked for, one which was unsolicited, at which point the report will go out and Blizzard's crack Erotic Role-Play Police saddle up and go to work.

Why don't they just create a digital bouncer for that particular bar and keep out all users under 18? Seems simple enough to me.

But then again, this is why I don't go on MMOs. If me and my freinds wanted to have a nudist stripper party, we'd have a nudist stripper party - no kids allowed. "God" or something isn't going to come down from the sky and shut the thing down.

Why can't MMOs be more libertarian? You create the world, let the players control the history. Who gives a shit what they do with it? As a matter of fact, the only thing Blizzard should be doing here is patrolling for illegal downloaders who walking into the World without paying. Beyond that, let them do what they want. If they hack the game to have a bazooka, yet them have a bazooka. Let things unfold as they will.

They should also check out Silvermoon City and the less in-sight areas of the Deeprun Tram.

So true.

It's double standards. Yes, there's a lot of rude content in places like Goldshire, but... How is it different to the rest of the game? Have you heard some of the flirt and silly emotes? I'm not condoning what public eRPers do, but this is wrong on so many levels. Firstly, WoW is what, a T/12+? Anyone who's "legal" to play it (for want of a better term) wouldn't be puzzled by half of what goes on. Secondly, Blizzard can't be everywhere at once. Thirdly, this stuff's been going on since WoW started (Probably. I started 2-3 years ago and it's always been like that), so why would Blizzard start cracking down now?

Cannot ...........stop ..........laughing
