Persona Creators Announce "Adult-Oriented" Catherine for PS3/360

It may not be Persona 5, but Atlus' newly-announced, "erotic" horror title Catherine is the next best thing.

It's been almost two years since Atlus' PS2 epic Persona 4, and fans of the series have been eagerly eating up rumors about a potential Persona 5 like Chie Satonaka eating up the Endless Beef Bowl.

Well, Persona fans, you're going to have to wait a bit longer for a proper Persona 5. But that doesn't mean the Persona team has just been sitting on its hands all this time: Earlier today, the team revealed its next project, Catherine, which is the first game that it has developed for the modern "HD" consoles.

Catherine is the story of a 30-year-old man named Vincent who encounters a much younger woman called Catherine, who seems to have a predilection for eating pizza suggestively. Soon after meeting Catherine, Vincent begins to have a recurring nightmare in which he is climbing a never-ending staircase, and ... uh, we don't know the rest yet.

Though the game doesn't have the Persona title (and as far as I can tell is missing the Shin Megami Tensei header), it has more than a few connections to the quirky JRPG series. Persona 3 and Persona 3 Portable Director/Producer Katsura Hashino and series Character Designer Shigenori Soejima are both attached to the project, as is long-time series Composer Shoji Meguro. According to Meguro, he's been instructed to compose for the game with key terms like "classic", "adult-oriented", and "erotic." That explains the depiction of the pizza.

Also, that explains the emphasis on the character's breasts. While the Persona series has always been known for its willingness to tackle serious issues like suicide and sexual identity, it's very interesting that the very first images we've seen of the game (and the eponymous female character) are things like this and this. It's intentionally and remarkably sexual, and it sets a very different tone for the game right from the outset.

The worst Persona 4 ever got was the whole faceless stripper bit. Though I think that wins out on the "creepy" scale.

I saw the picture and I laughed. I read the article and I laughed.

And now I want pizza. Curse you, not-so-subliminal messaging!

I'm very hungry...and aroused.

GODDAMNIT, JAPAN!

I really have no idea what the game will be like, but the story so far sounds interesting. And yes, I could go for some pizza too.

And I thought that the faceless shaodow stripper fucked me up.

Does the limited edition come with therapy sessions?

Im going to enjoy the looks I get when I go in to buy this!

I've always thought of the word "erotic" being more subtle then tits and pizza. Or at least more, I dunno... classy?

Part of me... is thinking that is a little extra sauce added to the pizza... and only making it look heavily suggestive...

Another part of me, was about to tell that part to shut up, but lost track of its thoughts after seeing just the right half of the picture...

And another part of me just got a hankering for pizza...

But every part of me can agree that we need this game! Now! Yay unity!

......I dont know if I should play this, I live in a busy house.

I find playing Persona outside of the dungeons arkward when family are nearby, how on earth I am supposed to play this without being judged. I am still very interested though.

This has a bit more info.

In the 2nd image I'm guessing our protagonist is the weird guy that looks like he's watched a season of Invader Zim. It's a shame they didn't go for someone...elegant.

Damn it Atlus, we want Persona 5 already not this game with pizza and tits and...
Ok, maybe we can wait just a little bit longer for Persona 5.

I'm thinking this will be an import for me. From the images it looks like something that will have a hard time making it through our rating system. Hopefully it does get an Australian release though, as the looks on the faces of the people in the store when I buy it will most certainly be priceless.

Ok,I want this game. I loved Persona 3 and 4, they were amazing games. If this is even a tiny bit alike, I'll be buying it.

As long as they don't go whole hog and just make it a hentai game. In fact, even if it were just a small part, I'd probably still get it. Assuming it's a comparable quality to Persona.

Anyone else get a "What has been seen cannot be unseen." vibe from the second picture?

As I was reading this I smelled pizza. Now I'm hungry.

And I really want to play this as a pure guilty pleasure.

Wait, that came out wrong.....as did that.

Yes, finally, Atlus goes HD. After all, no one is better at re-using resources for later titles, so there is no reason not to assume that this will be followed by several games, many of whom will hopefully be part of the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Yeah... I think that picture is pretty squicky...

I'm not sure what I like most about this news: pizza, boobs, or another Atlus game?

Pizza and sex, Japan knows everyone too well.

Next, on "Things that will never be released in North America..."

GODDAMNIT, JAPAN!

Japan always does this to me.

Unsubtle? Yes.

But damnit, I do love me some tits and pizza!

Same here.

Somehow, I want both that game and that slice of pizza.
Maybe there will be a Collector's Edition, including that very pizza!

Pizza? Boobies? Anyone else feel like watching Code Geass?

I really don't know how to feel about this.
I don't mind video games tackling more adult content in a serious manner, In fact I believe that it is necessary for the medium of gaming to grow. If handled in a truly mature and non-exploitative way something like this could help lead to more respect being given to gaming as an art form.

on the other hand it is coming from Japan, don't get me wrong I LOVE JAPAN, from anime to video games to Godzilla to Japanese cinema I love Japan. But as Moviebob once said (I can't remember if it was on this site or the GameOverthinker) " Japan, if you can think of it, we can think of it being Fucked by an octopus." I may be misquoting slightly, but you get the idea Japan has a bit of a reputation of having lets say a stranger then most westerners view on sexuality (anyone who has seen Bible Black or almost any other hentai can agree). this aspect of Japan's culture could end up shooting the whole mature sexuality in gaming in the foot. Remember the controversy behind the game Rapelay? well as I have been lead to believe Rape is a very popular collective fantasy over in Japan which does not translate well over in the US.

anyways this game will most likely never make it over to the states. which is a shame non the less because that add makes me really want to at least try the game out but who knowns it might make it over, the Megami Tensei games do have a good amount of fans the states.
Also now really really REALLY want Pizza.

Was that a command too...?

Cause too bad... already watching it...

I had to take a double take of that picture...I, was slightly worried, heh

Dammit! Ninja'ed. Also, Japan, I really commend you for being able to make stuff that would potentially rile up the Moral Guardians somewhere else (i.e. America). *Is waiting to see the live-action version of the Gantz naked teleport*

Huh. Well. Wow.

I can't stand Anime breasts. They're too perfectly round and bouncy.

That said, I'm off to fuck a pizza now. Don't judge me.

The word erotic makes me think of Zap Brannigan.... that can't be good...

From what I've heard, the Persona series has some in depth and compelling stories, so I'm sure Atlus will be able to deliver with this too, as potentially controversial as this may be.

But isn't that somewhat of a generalization? After all, this is being made by Atlus, who has no such track record whatsoever. It's like me saying that all american films are stupid and racist because of Michael Bay; it just doesn't hold up. That said, I do agree with one aspect of your post: this will be an important game which will most likely have repercussions as to how sexuality will be portrayed in future games. If Atlus does go the way many people seem to assume by this meagre preview, it would be a tragedy indeed.

Still, I have every faith that this will be a memorable and quality gaming experience, as that is the only track record Atlus has.

This looks weird, overly suggestive, and creepy, and I'll still probably pre-order it once it has a confirmation date, like I will with Persona 5.

I wonder if I'll have to order it online after i move out that's if its released over here

Agreed.
I do Have great hopes for this game being a step forward in gaming culture.
But when you have an ad the features an anime women with cheese dripping out of her mouth I can't help but worry
