[Update] Your Pokemon Black & White Starters Could Evolve Like This

image

If these "leaked" images of the final evolutions for the Pokemon Black & White starter critters are legit, I take back everything bad I ever said about that stupid-looking otter.

When Nintendo revealed the three starter Pokemon for the upcoming fifth generation of handheld Pokemon games, there was only one question on the minds of Poke-fans: What will they look like fully evolved? After all, the cute little Charmander turned into the badass flying Charizard, and the adorable and harmless Piplup became the giant steel penguin that was Empoleon. Surely these guys would turn into something awesome too, right?

Fake fan-made concepts for the final Black & White evolutions have been all over the internet, but a set of images has surfaced on Japanese message board 2ch that could be the real deal - seen here, to the right. Lending credibility to the images' authenticity is the fact that information that would later be confirmed as true about the upcoming Pokemon games - such as the new female professor and triple battles - had been previously leaked on the same 2ch board.

That being said, these are of course completely unconfirmed. While they look like they could be on the up-and-up, this could just be an instance of someone imitating the Pokemon series' style very, very well.

If they are real, though? Hoo boy. I'm actually very pleased with how they're turning out, and I can honestly say I didn't expect any of them to look this way - which could actually be further proof for them being real. Tsutarja's serpentine final evolution looks great (perhaps Grass/Dragon), and the shell-armor look of Mijumaru's sea-otter-slash-harpoon-gun makes me take back every bad thing I ever said about its dopey-looking original form.

The only one I'm not on board with is Pokabu's evolutionary line. Oh sure, it looks fine, but it also looks like it'll turn out to be a Fire/Fighting type - just like the other two fire-type starters before it. Yes, Fire/Fighting is a great type mix, but do we really need a third one in addition to Blaziken and Infernape? Really?

Whether real or not, it's a cool-looking set - and with the Japanese launch of Pokemon Black & White right around the corner (September 18th), we'll learn either way soon enough. Incidentally, judging by Japanese preorder numbers, Pokemon Black & White are already the fastest-selling DS titles of all time - and they aren't even out.

Update #1: Further unsubstantiated rumor is calling the Grass line Grass/Dragon, the Fire line Fire/Dark, and the Water line Water/Fighting. This seems a bit dodgy to me, but it'd be better than having another Fire/Fighting starter, so we can only hope.

Update #2: A user on 2ch has claimed that he made them as a hoax. Of course, the authenticity of this claim on the anonymous message board is as difficult to verify as the original images were. There's literally no way to know for sure until Nintendo officially unveils the 'mons.

If fake, though, we can still look at these as a cool and creative idea of what could be.

Update #3: Serebii has confirmed these as the real deal, with a "slim chance" that it's wrong - the source has been 100% accurate thus far. (via VG Tribune)

You posted your name at the start of the thread, but you forgot to reveal your gender and the name of your rival...

Now I can't properly finish the article.

Cool, I love the Grass and Water types, but I totally agree on the Fire type. We already have two (and we really didn't need two) and another one is just boring.

I was hoping for a Fire/Flying or something like that. Or Fire/Psychic.

Edit: Oops, we already have Charizard

Looks Fire/Dark type to me, but we'll see soon enough.

Anyways, as for the design, they really got creative. I did not expect to see the Grass one turn into a snake (chances are it would be another Grass/Poison then too). And the Water one turning into a mix of a Lapras and a Unicorn (because Otters = Unicorns)

Either way, fairly interesting.

The water pokemon has been redeemed, but I'm going to stick with grass as my starter. I might do water my second play through (if I get through the first).

when will these creators just sit down for five minutes take a good long look into each others eyes and just unamamously agree to just let the pokemon series die with whatever dignity it still has left rather than scrape it out over another few bad remakes.

Man, this is the first time I've actually felt conflicted about which starter I would choose.

Is it me or does the water one look like water/electric? (sorta ixion thing going on there)

Anyways I like these designs hope that if they're not official that the ones that are look better then these :<

I now laugh at everyone who hated the Otter before they saw its evolved forms!

Because the 4th generation was the best generation yet? And 5th looks to be adding some awesome stuff too?

Ok the grass and waters look really cool. However once again, the fire one looks a little dodgy. I haven't seen a fire starter I like since Silver and Gold :S

I said SoulSilver would be the last Pokemon game I buy.

Goddammit.

Oh come on. The fire evolutions look like shit. And they're always my starters!

Am I the only one that still finds them appaling? They look horrible. The stages skip physical features and the resulting pokemon have basically no similar attributes.

I sort of dig the patterns on the pig, but even that looks way too fucking bloated and unrestricted. Don't just clutter design elements on them and make them look generically 'epic'.

I do like pretty much all the pokemon games, but I'd definitely say 2nd gen is my favourite (unfortunately I haven't got the remakes yet, but they look awesome).

What a pleasant suprise. I agree that the fire type is the weakest of the three, but the other two (or four, rather) look great!

Did anyone else notice that that water type is maybe two steps away from Mudkip (and Swampert, respectively)? Just saying.

That grass type looks amazing :) The fire one, to me at least, just looks dumb, lol. If this is any indication of the design direction for an entire new cast of pokemon, white/black are shaping up to be pretty amazing.

What the hell is the final water one supposed to be anyway? Some kind of sea unicorn? The grass one just looks stupid, which would make fire my primary choice. Hell, they all look stupid, when will they let pokemon die?

Wow, the fire one just looks awful. I like the other two though and my faith in the water starter has been redeemed.

Uber Waddles:

You are thinking of Narwhals...

http://www.weebls-stuff.com/songs/Narwhals/

but anywho I do think these certainly look interesting. I like the Snake idea though. I always wanted a Poison Ivy type pokemon but that may be because I named my Hitmonchan "Batman". He was cool

This is the first time that I thought all the starters sucked. I mean come ON! You have three options to choose from and each one has two other forms to look badass! How do you screw that up?

I think I might just get the grass type now! I'm really disappointed in that fire type....the first form looked soo cool!

The Grass starter looks even more awesome now. And the water one doesn't look half bad.

Fire looks...passable at best. Though I never did choose fire... well except for Blaziken. All sorts of fetishes involved in that choice... :3

..Is that the Pokemon version of a battleship for the water starter?

They don't look so bad.

..They don't look so great, either.

Smugleaf looks even more smug than before in that last evolution.

Eh, I can't help but agree, at least with the last part... At least with this one they are saying the pokemon you see are all new until you beat the game... but still... whats the number at? 500+ now? I can't play that... just way too many to try and catch and trade around with nobody else just to get a pokemon to evolve (I hated that too, some pokemon needed to be traded just for them to evolve, then your friend could be a total dbag and not give it back...)

on a side note, where the hell did your avatar come from? Looks like some TF2 type of thing with the spy... but I have no clue...

Dragonair -> Dragonite, man. Just saying.

The only one that's a stretch is the Water one - the others clearly share the same design theme - and that gets a pass because it looks awesome and graceful.

...I want that water-type...

I was originally going to go with the grass snake but seeing the final form of the otter makes me thing otherwise. I mean a pokemon with a weapon on its back is pretty much instant win.

Also I wonder how long until these pictures get ruled 34? O_o

dudes wtf is wrong with your taste in cool things here??? I mean i guess the grass one looks alright but the water and fire ones look like SHIT ok the second evolution of the water one looks cool but the final form suks realy bad. The first starters where the coolest all im saying.

You didn't like a fighting-fire monkey?!

OH GOD.!

Uhm out of all of those it looks like i'm using a grass poke'mon, annoying really since I love using fire poke'mon as starters!

I just love the pokemon series, It's simply faboulus

Wow.
these look Awesome!

Though i cant help but think that the Artists were playing Spectrobes while designing them.
And that's not really a bad thing.

Spectrobes gave me a Cactus Dragon.
CACTUS.
DRAGON.
And it is one of the coolest things i have ever seen.
The water type reminds me of

Just not quite as cool.

Hmmm.
I can see Pokabu as a Fire/Fighting.
But to me it actually looks more like a Fire/Rock Type.

Nintendo, I am disappoint. I imagined the fire piglet Pokemon evolve in something like this:
image
But ON FIRE!!!

How awesome would thát be?!

John Funk:

Eh I beg to differ. I always found the Pokemon starting to get more and more over-designed after the second generation. Too many bells and whistles, too many patterns and stuff, not animal-like enough.

That's not saying the first 2 generations didn't have some absolutely stupid designs. Magnetite...sériously? How does that...thing (can you even call it an animal?) reproduce?
