EA Releases Disappointing Second Madness Returns Trailer

Wonderland was packed full of danger, even before Alice went nuts, but fiery tentacle beasts? That's something new.

A new trailer for Alice: Madness Returns, the upcoming sequel to 2000's American McGee's Alice, seems to suggest that the nightmarish visions that plagued Alice as she lay comatose in the first game, are spilling out into her waking hours as well.

We see Alice walking the streets of London, where a colorful diorama depicting a familiar tea party catches her eye. She sees a reflection in the glass and turns to look, only to have a terrible creature erupt from the diorama and drag her inside. The trailer ends with a ragged voice asking what Alice had done, suggesting that all this weirdness is somehow Alice's fault.

As trailers go, it's not bad, but you'd be hard pressed to make the argument that it was anywhere near as creepy as the first, which ends with Alice opening her mouth to speak and nothing but blood and teeth pouring out. If insanity is going to be a prominent theme in Madness Returns, it's going to have to crank up the atmosphere, and tentacles don't really cut it anymore.

Alice: Madness Returns is being developed by Shanghai-based Spicy Horse Studios, and will be released for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 sometime next year.

It's American McGee, it will be creepy. Also things pouring out of mouths at the end of games seems to be a calling card of his (See the hidden room in the last level of Quake 2 single player).

I think the trailer is just fine. Wouldn't want it to give away any of the good stuff, better to experience it first hand.

SO. WANT.

(How the hell is this disappointing??????)

If they showed her burning and melting, that would've been neat.

I assume they're keeping the real creepy stuff secret.

Ok this is the first I'v heard of this, it made me want to check out the original though. cant seem to find it anywhere except amazon and ebay for silly money. is it really that rare as a game?

hoping they put this out through steam and release alice at a good price on there to go with it

Really looking forward to this.

Trailer wasn't too bad.

My favourite is still the one where she is at the psychiatrist then he turns into the cheshire cat.

(Yes I know it's an old one for a different game but it's still damn good!)

It's one of those gems that was incredibly good but never got a re-printing, so disks go for pretty high sums.

OT: I'm torn on how to feel about this. On one hand, I loved the first game and I know that the second will probably pale in comparison to the point where it's just disappointing. On the other hand, it might be passably good enough to get a real kick out of. We'll see.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man. I thought this trailer was great and it's now got me very hyped up for the game.

I haven't really tried American McGee's Alice. Anyone know where I can still get it from? As far as trailers go, it looks pretty good. I can't wait to see what the finished product will be like.

Well, the fire imagery has a purpose within this version of the Alice mythos. Don't forget, she was the sole survivor (and went nuts from) her house burning down with her family inside. So from that perspective, it makes sense for fire to accompany the apperance of her parents.

What he said, only more so.

It's not like EA likes to hide their games behind unrelated trailers. Dragon age 1&2, anyone?

Thanks but £15 is a bit steep for a game I know nothing about. still its better than the £50-100 I was seeing on Amazon

I would be more happy if the damn trailer would play....

Would you buy Psychonauts for that much? It's as good.

I think it looks pretty good

Yeah - I imagine will release later and then our jaws will hit the floor, heh

well in that case I'll keep an eye on the ebay. sadly going away tomorrow so may try and get it while in US

still need to buy Psychonauts too!

Eh, maybe they were going for the whole little girl taken by tentacles angle and some people have been desenetized to that angle too much already. ;)

Either way, I find this trailer to be fine. I like the briefness of it and to be honest...I like it more than the SC2 launch trailer, that was just a bit too stereotypical for my tastes. I prefer some mystery and a brief, creepy foreshadowing trailer does it nicely for me. Each to his own in the end it is.

That said, both of the Alice trailers are still a bit too similar in style to each other for my tastes, including perhaps the final phrase, so in that respect - yes, could use some work.

It's just a 1 minute trailer, guy. He seems to be taking it rather personally.....

GO! And do not return to the internet until you complete the Assault Course! ;)

Unrelated? The main trailer for Dragon Age one ties directly into the entire game, it was a CGI rendered version of an event that you actually play through in the game.

o.o? was fine, not as creepy as the first, but why spoil that just yet

but, its a DO WANT NAO!!! game

Just like Alice is going to be in London and dragged back into Wonderland. Congrats, we have a generic premise and some CGI. I remember watching that one (and then again after this one) thinking, 'This isn't how the game will look, but it's still cool.'

I never played the first one so IKD.

Didn't find the trailer disappointing but it wasn't great either. The first Alice seemed to be more about psychological horror and disturbing creatures... Firey monsters are a pretty standard affair though.

Yup, the first was better, but I reserve judgement till the product comes out.

I definitely liked the first trailer better in terms of creepy-ness, but I like this one as well, mainly because it seems to reveal more of the actual story and of Alice's new personality. Well, as much of the story as we're bound to get out of a trailer, anyway. I have a feeling they're going to keep the story a well-kept secret till the release.

And this is unrelated how? What do you expect from a teaser trailer? Of course it's not how the game will look, I remember seeing the gameplay long before the trailer as I'm sure most people who were interested in Dragon Age did.

Not as scary? Yes. But disappointing? Not really.

This just reminds that I still have to play the original American McGee's Alice. I hear so much praise about the game and the games that are recommended to me often truly turn out to be good. =/ I will see if I can still get a PC copy some time in the future.

The only thing I find "disappointing" might be the drama title of this thread... but otherwise I'm fine.

Exactly! Besides, whats more terrifying than a bunch of fiery tentacles that obviously aren't lighting her on fire, while dragging her away and out of view...!

The only thing that would scare more, is a bunch of asian schoolgirls...

I think it would be better if she was froced to break the class by mechanical hands that would then drag her bleeding towards blackness.

Seemed pretty creepy to me. She just got...
