Demon's Souls Makes Brutalizing Return as Project Dark

Project Dark might not have the title of Demon's Souls 2, but it might as well.

From Software's Demon's Souls drew in players with strong review scores and the allure of challenging, yet rewarding gameplay. Much to the surprise of everyone, it sold enough to become part of the PlayStation 3's Greatest Hits line, and a sequel has been greatly anticipated by the hundreds of thousands that bought it. We need not anticipate any longer.

Project Dark (working title), in development by From Software - the studio behind Demon's Souls - and published by Namco Bandai, isn't directly named as the sequel to Demon's Souls, but it's obviously a spiritual sequel. The game's first trailer has the same feel as Demon's Souls and shows gameplay that looks nearly identical.

Tons of gross demons? Check. Third-person combat? Check. The player's face catching on fire? This is definitely Demon's Souls.

Project Dark is already planned for release worldwide in 2011, on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 outside of Japan this time. The multiplatform release may explain its name change, as Demon's Souls was published by Sony in Japan. Its official website provides little information other than that we'll know more early next year and that it's an action RPG. Regardless, it's nice to know our faces will be lit on fire again soon.

I'll see if I like this one. Demon's Souls was more or less too much for me (even though I did wind up beating it), but I still like the idea behind it. Now that I'm no longer roomed with a PS3 owner, I like hearing that it'll be released on Xbox 360.

A sequel in everything but name...

It isn't that common, but it used to be all the rage back in the NES days to port one game to another system under a different title due to lisencing issues and most kids only had one system and never knew they were playing a port.

Adventure Island was a port of Wonder Boy on the Sega Master System (the system before the genesis) because the characters and names were owned by Sony while the game itself was owned by Escape.

Seems odd to make it a spiritual sequel when it's so clearly very, very sequelish. If they were going to make it a "spiritual" sequel couldn't they change the setting at least?

IF its Like Demon's Souls then its a definitely a buy for me besides it pretty much looks like a sequel just not in name

Here's to seeing each other's corpses and souls soon!

NINTENDO SIXTY FOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, that's how excited I am. I am so pumped that I just felxed hard enough to shred my clothes in hulk pants.
And the fact that I will be able to play with my friends that only have ecksbawks? Excellent!

Fuck yes, the only true dark fantasy game of this generation is getting a sequel!? F**king Sold.

I can't wait for this!

GOAL! I'm so excited. LOVED Demon's Souls. Me and my roommate used to adventure together in a make-shift co-op mode (consisting of (the living) one of us putting down an invite in some out of the way corner of an area and the other guy quickly nabbing it), so much fun.

Siiiiick. Demon's Souls is one of the few times where I could forgive a sequel for being more of the same simply because Demon's Souls was that awesome.

Fuck yea!

What they should change: More weapons/items. Better character custimization. Better online connectivity (maybe that's just me, I had the asian version and could almost exclusively play with Japanese players). Maybe they could go a little into randomly created content, altough that might prove too challenging in a game like this (but would help replayability and would be pretty fucking sick when exploring uncharted territory with a group).

What they shouldn't tinker with: Delicious combat and feel/athmosphere. The save/losing souls/online system has to stay the same as well.

Also Project Dark is a horrible title, possibly even worse than Demon's Souls (for all it's double s's it's still pretty imformative). It better be a working title.

the music almost sounds like its ripped straight from Dante´s Inferno.

I loved Demon's Souls, so this is a big blip on my radar right now. I would love some more Demon's souls.

coming to the 360? that's awesome because I always wanted to try Demon's Souls but it wasnt enough incentive to pick up a PS3. waiting for this!

Looks pretty good. Going to wait for a few more trailers and gameplay before I really add it to my list of must-haves. However the fact its the sequel to Demons Souls is making it a rather large blip on my gamesdar at the moment.

What would be cool? partying up using some sort of non-4th wall breaking style lobby. And chatting.

I loved the gameplay of Demon's Souls but I didn't even try to finish the third level because I hate Dark Fantasy. It's a shame they didn't take a different route on the visual/narrative style.

Just as long as another one in same vein is coming out I am happy!

I am already excited for this game, as my now New Game ++++++ file on Demon's Souls will attest to.

More Demon's Souls? Hooray! It better have the same difficulty... or perhaps be even harder.

Sticky white stuff is all over my keyboard now.

That monster that crushes the guy looks absolutely amazing. Real Demon's Souls Project Dark starts now!

Great, one more game that confuses masochism with fun. Just what the world needs sarcasm/

Its only punishment for stupid people. Really. You will never die in Demon's souls because the game cheats, it will always be because the player is weak in one area or another.
Look at yahtzee's review: he didn't even understand that the backstep is not a magic "can't hit me" move; its a damn backstep and if the enemy swings twice, you gotta move.

It seems the safer option, maybe they're going for a different difficulty or gameplay style.

Direct sequels usually result in "they changed it now it sucks".

Thank god! I cant wait to play it on my 360.
No offence to the ps3, but i HATE *mini-seizure* the ps3 controller.

Hell. Yes.

The only thing I want from this game is just a tad bit more narrative.

Demon's souls gameplay + Xbox live = Epic Win!

This isn't a counter argument but what's the point of the dodge move, holding the analog stick back worked just as well for as long as I played the game at least.

Actually, its more of a weak dodge, but it -can- be used as a "stutter step" thingy, as in, you do it to break up an opponents' attack rhythm (opponent starts a swing, you backstep and then block, suddenly the enemy is a half length further than he wants to be, allowing you a little room and more control of the fight. Or you could do it to fake him out, like you dodge then you rush.)
But over all I think its a pvp move for certain weapons.

edit: part of what annoys me about yahtzee's review is that he put the lack of basic "win button" crap into the "against" category when it came to demon's souls.

Oh, you're just trained to use a different style. Remember the old sega controllers? you know, the ones that were shovel sized that little kids like myself couldn't get their hands around? people came to prefer those over that of the SNES. Its just about muscle memory.

oh dear god I hope they make no mics still, I really don't want someone invading my game yelling at me.

but then Demon's Souls wouldn't have been Demon's Souls. The title itself kind of implys Dark Fantasy.

Whenever I get a PS3, if this isn't released yet, I'll be getting Demon's Souls and later this... or if it's already out when I get a PS3... I'll still get them both =).

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Uh... sorry, I'll leave before I further embarrass myself.

Call it Angel's Souls for all I care, just give it moar color, moar dialogue, and moar interesting characters. Demon's Souls was already perfect in gameplay IMO there is no reason they can't focus on story.
