Furry Action-RPG Going for TV Commercial World Record

image

A game you've probably never heard of may soon hold the world record for most unique commercials shown in a single day.

When you're trying to promote the spiritual sequel to a PlayStation game released more than a decade ago that was barely noticed back then, you've got to be creative to get the word out there. Namco Bandai's furry-friendly action-RPG Solatorobo fits that bill and is trying to make a splash in Japan by going for the most commercials shown in an 8 hour period.

Solatorobo is the spiritual sequel to the PS1's Tail Concerto. See, I told you you've never heard of it. Both are developed by CyberConnect2, recently known for bringing a giant space Buddha to Capcom's Asura's Wrath, and star anthropomorphic animals in 3D adventures reminiscent of the Mega Man Legends series.

On October 21, a Solatorobo promotion will take over Japanese television network Tokyo MX TV. Over the span of 8 hours, 100 different commercials for Solatorobo will be shown. That's one commercial for every 4.8 minutes.

Namco Bandai is attempting to achieve a Guinness World Record with the promotion. Rather than each commercial being a small variant, they'll reportedly have the theme of an "encyclopedia." Each will give a new tidbit on the Solatorobo story, including information about Red, the anthropomorphic fox main character that rides around various mechs, and the fact that Solatorobo takes place on an island floating above a sea of deadly plasma.

The idea sounds like it could be overkill, though I doubt there will be many people watching television for 8 hours straight, so it may just expose the game to lots of people and give it the positive press of having a world record. I can't say I would mind a similar promotion over here for say, Fallout New Vegas or a similar title, because at least it would stop TV commercials from being such a drag. Solatoboro is scheduled for release in Japan on the Nintendo DS on October 28, with overseas possibilities not yet mentioned.

I would approve that in the US, it is political season here and I am in a swing state.

Image is broke.

Man I hope this comes out over here.. along with some sort of Tail Concerto re-release. I've been trying to add that game to my collection for the better part of a decade >.>

Ah yes, Tail Concerto. That was a solid game. Now if only I can get a decent recollection of how it played like... All I can remember now is you control a white furreh that happens to pilot a robot. Maybe something like Megaman Legends, perhaps?

You severely underestimate the tenacity of your average Japanese otaku.

Yes, this. Wouldn't that just be wonderful, candidates slinging mud in between ads for such an obscure console title. You'd probably end up with one of the game's characters getting a serious part of the write-in vote.

Hmm. So the main character appears to be some kind of chibi-Captain Komamura from the anime Bleach, wielding what appears to be a gun/sword combo. Who rides around in mechs. Sounds good enough for-

Ah. Well, let's hope they reconsider. Sounds interesting.

I would like to try this out hopefully it will somehow make its way to the US

Well, ill give it due...its certain unique!

You could trap enemies in bubbles and toss them around with your mecha suit. Was fun. I only played the "import demo" on a Playstation underground Jampack CD (how I miss those so...), so I only got the first stage... boss fight was fun though.

Seconded...but for the UK! X3

Also, I forsee 8 hours of my life being lost to random video watching :D

Considering how much hatred there seems to be flying about on the internet about furfags, I find an attempt at a guiness record of showing the most of them in the shortest amount of time is hilarious to no end. *grins* That said...hrm...Japan probably has a different take on action-RPG but...*shrug* what do I know.

Yet another "World Record" as marketing gimmick. Wonderful. Well, I guess they got the attention they were hoping for.

I don't know if it was your intention, but using the term "furfags" even if no actual hate is behind it is not welcome on this site.

Sounds cool, hope it gets translated!

the anthropomorphic fox main character that rides around various mechs

Sounds like something taken out of a japanese-themed random character generator.

The term is used to express the biased disdain of said individuals, lumping all furry-lovers into zealots that, quite frankly, *all* fandoms have in one way or another. Hence me saying that I find it amusing. Had I actually been against furries, I would probably *not* have found it as amusing...this is precisely why I find it funny these hateful people get to rage a bit more if they happen across this little commercial blitz they're planning. :p

Man I used to play the demo so much. Then the disc got lost. I played a bit on an emulator but it waws hard to control with a keyboard and it wouldn't save. Wouldn't mind having that game on my shelf.

I would like to see more variations in american game commercials... simply because I'm sick of seeing the same ones over and over again. So much so that I turn off the TV for days at a time.
I know commercials aren't cheap. But with the advent of machinma, you would think that game companies could make decent commercials without having to go far outside their pockets.

I understand, and that's cool man. But I'd probably get some heat if I said,

"man those KKK guys really hate ni**ers" (without the censoring obviously)

Because in the context it's not absolutely clear weather I call black people ni**ers or KKK does.

Well, at least this game will take up the attention of DeviantArt for a short while.

Although that is a metric fuckton of commercials. I hope the Japanese like seeing the same game being advertised over and over.

Looks good enough for me, i hope it comes out in europe it looks so promising. Over here you don't get much of that stuff and i have sky HD tv around 999 channels and no manga or anime stations or shows like Gundom, Narieto, sailers moon etc. Please god and hope for the best.

i noticed this game a few weeks back.
i heard tail concerto was pretty awesome so this game piqued my interest.

plus i need a new game for my DS to stop gathering dust.

I read some youtube comments. Apparently Red can change into a human. It would be pretty neat if that happened and everyone went, "Oh my God! What have you become?"

Tom Goldman:

Attempting? You mean they could fail?! How embarassing would that be, to fail at commercial slots. The game/commercial is so bad the network refuses to keep showing them.

Why is everyone so concerned about a US release? The game is breaking a world record and seems to have a lot of effort put into it. Im sure they wont forget to release it here. Most games made in japan end up making it overseas. Just give it some time.

plus im really looking forward to it

I feel your pain.

OT: It's so crazy it might just work! (Hey! Two cliches in one post, I'm on a roll!) ((make that three))

Urggg... Furries... You know for about 2 years i didn't think shit that weird existed. I simply wouldn't belive humanity was THAT fucked up.

Watch it buddy, that kind of talk is against the rules.

But perhaps you're just ignorant. so to give you the benefit of the doubt let me educate you. The majority of the furry fandom has nothing to do with sex.

Like every anime ever made.

/blatant generalization

Honestly, if I kept seeing commercials for the same damn product every few minutes I would probably get more annoyed by it than anything. I'm interested in seeing how this works out.

Already got my preorder - I dont even need commericals I knew about this Months ago but I would love to see some State side; but then again I could always watch for some on YouYube

^__^

Anything that makes commercials actually worth watching is okay with me. Seen a commercial once, you've seen it 50 times before the week is over. Hell, I personally watch only a few hours of TV in any given month and even I get tired of the commercials, I can only imagine how bad it gets for people who watch TV regularly.

Everybody is "fucked up" in some way. The only thing that makes any one person more fucked-up than the other is the number of people who are willing to agree that the other guy is more fucked-up.

You're complanining about furries? Even when there is way more sick stuff out there than some people liking a humanized animal?
