World of Warcraft: Cataclysm's Deathwing Performing Halftime Show

Deathwing is kicking off the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm during a football game this weekend.

Are you ready for some druids!? Hold on... let me re-do that. Are you ready for some exclusive World of Warcraft: Cataclysm footage!? Well then turn your television dials or tune your DVRs to Fox this weekend because that's the first place you'll get to see new footage from the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion pack.

Blizzard is gearing up to release Cataclysm on December 7, 2010 and even football fans aren't safe from Deathwing's swath of destruction. The developer has announced that the Dallas Cowboys vs. Minnesota Vikings NFL game taking place this Sunday, October 17 at 4:15 PM EDT which will be broadcast on Fox television will not only feature thrilling touchdown catches and vicious tackles, but also a brand new commercial for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

The commercial is something WoW fans will want to see, because it'll be the first time anyone on the planet (outside of Blizzard) gets a look at Cataclysm's cinematic footage. Blizzard didn't say when the commercial will be airing, so it could be at halftime, during the two minute warning of the fourth quarter, or snuck in right after opening kick-off. It'd be best to just watch the entire game.

World of Warcraft's cinematics are top notch, with Activision's Bobby Kotick even wanting to sell them separately. Blizzard always tops itself in my opinion, so expect something great this Sunday. Even if you can't stand football, that's what VCRs and fast-forward were invented for.

I'm sorry what? VCR? That's been in my closet for years now. I think ya meant DVR right? :P

No! VCR! Old-school!

...The funny thing is my TV has a VHS/DVD combo.

Wow, Deathwing has absorbed waaaaay to much magic from the Malestrom. Dear Titans help us all!
OT: Meh, I'll wait til it is on youtube.

I bet the cinematic will be... chaotic.

Hopefully a leaked video will be put up on Youtube soon after.

I may have grown tired of World of Warcraft loooong ago, but... Blizzard cinematics? Swoon.

From a gamers perspective, showing a commercial for World of Warcraft during a football match just seems... odd.

Now, viewing this from Blizzards perspective, this was a really smart move.

I guess I'll have to watch it then, huh?

I'll wait until BlizzCon. They'll pretty sure show the intro in its entirety and I don't want to spoil myself watching parts of it in the commercial.

I'm not a Warcraft, but even I can appreciate the awesomeness of their cinematics. I'll probably wait until it appears on YouTube, though.

Millions in adverts and I still wouldn't go back to world of grindcraft. I'm with Eruanno, though. I wish they'd make a full featured movie with those gorgeous CGs.

If they fucking dare to put only part of the full cinematic on there, I'll have their heads. Had enough of that commercial shit with SC2.

[Insert negative comment about the game based on experience (That has been changed/no longer exists) three to four years ago here]

Honestly, i'll just wait until someone posts it on youtube.

Whoo, calm down, dude. It's a TV spot, not the end of the world.

A.) Buying a 2 minute+ ad slot is probably a bit pricey,

B.) I would bet solid money that they'll be unveiling the Cataclysm opening cinematic at BlizzCon a week from today. What we're going to see at the football game is probably just a teaser. Why would they unveil the full thing for an audience who might not be interested as opposed to an audience who would almost certainly be there FOR it?

John Funk:

I got burned badly by the SC2 commercials. There was literally only one part in the game's cinematics that was new to me, and that was the 'twist' ending you see coming a mile away. Now, this doesn't exactly work for WoW the same way as for Starcraft 2, but still, I hate having to get bits and drops before the game comes out, only to find out the full version off said cinematic(-s) is actually worse. And yes, I don't have any willpower and I will see this as soon as it's somewhere on the web, damn it.

LOL! Poor Tom... living in the past.

I hope the commercial is as clever as some of the WoW ones from the past. It probably won't be funny though - just flashy.

I still watch old episodes of 90s shit that I have on tape, too, Tom.

I want to see it, but I can't stand watching football. Long live youtube.

I'm sure they are fudging the numbers before they come around Kotick's desk or he would have an aneurism of galactic and hilarious proportions(That would be worth watching on Youtube). It's been a while since I heard the last pricetag of a superbowl slot, but I'm pretty sure the regular Sunday games have reached or surpassed that by now.

Considering what they pulled with the Starcraft 2 reveal at a previous BlizzCon(Like the Inquisition, nobody was expecting it. Security companies and movie studios have a lot to learn from Blizzard(Yes, I went there)), it can only be beyond Epic in comparison. And that makes me weep that I won't be there.
But in response to @ciortas1: Not to sound callous, but that is how the world works. Accept it, or work to change it yourself. Shouting to the heavens only gives you a sore throat. And weird looks. And a reservation for a padded cell even.

The Wrath of the Lick King Cinematic blew me away. This should be nothing short of epic. (As the intro cinematic seem to get better with each expansion)

In all fairness, if there was any studio under the Vivendi/ActiBlizz umbrella that probably has carte blanche to spend whatever it wants on a product, it's Blizzard. I imagine Bobby Kotick stopping by to chat with Mike Morhaime, all "Hey Mike, are you sure about this? It's pretty expensive to do that..." and Mike Morhaime just waves the latest subscription income numbers in front of Bobby's face.

Icehearted:

You know a 7 min CGI takes about a year for them to make. Full CGI with that kind of quality is hard and slow to make.

I now have a reason to watch the Vikes game this weekend.

...oh, sorry, that's how I imagine it.

I really want to see it. The Burning Crusade intro was sort of "meh", but the Lich King one was a straight shot of awesome to the eyeballs. Even now I can watch it, and every time Arthas's boot crunches into the snow and "O Thanagor" begins, I get just a little shiver down my spine. I expect Blizzard to absolutely blow us away this time- if nothing else, remaking the world ought to be a hell of a spectacle.

Oh, I don't doubt it, but since Warcraft 3 I've been constantly impressed by their work in that department, and do not doubt that if properly motivated they could make something truly beautiful.

Besides, if they really considered making a feature length CG movie with their talents behind it and pushed for a box office or even straight to DVD release I don't doubt they'd make a killing.

I wonder if this has any correlation with the Goblin starting area quest where Deathwing appears during a Goblinized version of american football... Hope I didn't ruin anything.

Hehehe. I'm sure Bobby would start drooling at those numbers and mumble something about it being alright. Subscription income numbers are ridiculously high. Why, any one of us could live comfortable off of a half of a percent of what WoW makes every month. And our children, and our grandchildren.

I'm hoping to catch a YouTube video of it. If not, I'll just watch the BlizzCon stream.

Imagine the development cycle for a CGI quality film of that calibur made by Blizzard, the universe would end before it was finished, this is the "It'll be ready when it's ready" company we're on about :P

Hmm....do you think the market of WoW players overlaps with people who watch Football? I dunno.

And Mike gets his weekly entertainment of watching Bobby's eyes get all round and bright, and then Bobby starts yipping like a puppy.

that would explain why the cinimatics were removed from the game on a fresh install......FUCK BOBBY KOTICK!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bobby wants to sell THESE videos separately too?

I don't like to say this, but source? If i recall that time they actually told about their CGI development schedule the timeframe included the time to create and approve concept art which is majority of time needed really.
