Rumor: Lucas Planning New Star Wars Trilogy

It might finally be time to find out exactly what happened after Return of the Jedi, perhaps even centuries after, if rumors are to be believed.

George Lucas is reportedly getting ready to make three new Star Wars movies, set after the fall of the Empire. Not only that, but the new films will apparently not focus on anyone named Skywalker.

Movie website IESB cited an "ultra top-secret LucasFilm insider," who said that Lucas planned to release the first part of the new trilogy within two years after the 3D re-release of Return of the Jedi, which was expected to be sometime around 2015 or 2016. IESB drew parallels between the upcoming the upcoming re-releases and the Special Editions in the 90's, saying that Lucas planned to use the money generated from box office and DVD and Blu-Ray sales to fund the new movies, just as he'd done with the prequel trilogy.

The source also suggested that Lucas would deliberately leave a gap in the timeline, perhaps even as long as a thousand years, to give himself some freedom and not have to keep referring back to the previous movies. The source credits the success of the movie Avatar and the Clone Wars TV show as inspiring Lucas to create new material. LucasFilm has denied the rumor, but IESB said that that was to be expected and was adamant that their source was correct. IESB referenced its track record of LucasFilm scoops, and saying that it had been the first to break the news of Revenge of the Sith's PG-13 rating, as well the existence of a Star Wars TV show.

The less than stellar prequel trilogy left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth, but if these rumors are actually true, it could actually be wonderful news. A little room to maneuverer with the story might be just what Lucas needs to get his creative juices flowing again, and by going so far forward in the timeline, he won't interfere with the Expanded Universe content either. At the very least, a new Star Wars trilogy would likely have some cool lightsaber battles in it, and would let Lucas get back to telling stories about good triumphing over evil, which he seems to be quite good at, rather than a great hero's descent into villainy, which he's not so good at.

NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

NOT AGAIN!!!!

What Lucas needs is people who actually challenge his ideas. Thats what made the original trilogy so good.

He gave his wife the scripts as an anniversary present and said he wouldn't touch them unless she gave him permission because of how upset she was at how much time the movies took of his life. I doubt she folded so quickly. This is probably wrong.

While I've heard the eventual game plan was at one point to have three trilogies, I would doubt that work would start on a new Star Wars film so close to the television series.

this.
I really hope he doesn't strap the stomtrooper down this time. (cookiez for referencez)

you know, I know these are probably gonna suck, but even as I'm writing this, there's a hyperactive voice in the back of my brain freaking out over it. Cannot... Suppress...any... longer!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New Star Wars! Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy.

I really don't have as much hate for the prequel trilogy as most people do. I actually kinda liked episode 1, the other two were fairly boring besides the lightsaber fighters but oh well.

Either the new ones are good and I'm happy, or they suck and I just never watch them again and move on.

This isn't the first time I've heard this rumor, and it won't be the last. Just someone making some quick cash of an old story.

Holding judgement until a release date is announced. Then I'm going to shit in G. Lucas' bed.

If they're genuinely good and organic to the plot. Not just pointless flogging of dead horses. I'll have no beef with the old fart. But if he's just bored and deciding to rape another franchise he owns... again. I think measures must be taken. Faecal measures.

I'd love to see a Knights of the Old Republic trilogy with Zayne Carrick !

This just in: George Lucas wants more money. Again.

Interesting. It's no great loss to me if it's made and turns out horrible, but I am quite fond of the starwars universe - and I loved KOTOR, which had that same millenia of time seperating it from the established continuity. I guess it's worth a shot, but he'll be shooting himself in the foot if he surrounds himself with yes men. People who create need to have people disagreeing with them, or they get lost in their own mental tide of 'wouldn't it be cool if, wouldn't it be great if, wouldn't it be interesting if...'

And down that way lies darkness.

This begs the question why would they do that? I guess if they don't focus on a Skywalker they can have some room to make a film trilogy, but it still feels like what can be said in the Star Wars Universe has already been said. What with the movies, comics, books, games, and TV shows.

So this trilogy is going to take place "A few years ago, in a Galaxy a little farther away..."?

*hides the china, glass, and other breakables*

There we go, I think that does it.

Go read the books people, there good, you dont have to play out the ass to read them more then once, and you still get hte same effect.

If this is true, I'll give it a chance to impress me but I won't freak out if it turns out false. We ARE talking about the man responsible for the Star Wars Christmas Special, after all.

I find the very idea of this profane. Is it okay to report the news post?

It depends on where they go with it. I mean the prequels sucked horribly for the most part. However from what little I have seen in expanded universe stuff and video games I know there is some good cinema in there. I mean cmon having just played the demo of force unleashed 2 you can just see the kind of imagination that exists in their veins. Whether or not this translates into new films that don't turn into political chick flicks with crap characters remains to be seen.

The first movie in the prequels was the worst of the entire series, but still entertaining. The other two I still thought were very good. I'm not on this bandwagon. More Star Wars? Yes, sir. Please.

Give us some Thrawn!

As long as they try to make their own original movies, not try to make film versions of the expanded universe. Let creativity be the big factor here.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

....
Ok.

But only if it's Zahn's trilogy and Lucas and McCullum don't touch it with a 10 foot forcepike.

After the second trilogy and just given Lucas' mindset after the original trilogy, no thanks. I don't need more mediocre crap thrown my way with the name of a legendary trilogy slapped on only to tarnish it's good name further.

I am not sure what to think of this yet. It will probably be awhile before we get a confirmation on this. I can't help but be excited though, because I love star wars, hopefully the movies are good.

Cool, I enjoyed the prequals so I might enjoy this.

Strange I am the first to pick this out of the article, but Lucas "needs" to use the expected money from re-re-releasing Star Wars into 3-D to fund this rumored trilogy? Seriously?
I'm in favor of finally getting some closure to these movies, and hopefully before the original actors die of old age first. Yeah, I know... Mark Hamill won't be in it, neither will Carrie Fisher, but I'll bet Harrison Ford will at least get a cameo. Quit dicking around, make the movies, and don't act like you haven't been able to afford to do it.

With original films that don't focus on the past, I think he could actually come up with something interesting and pleasing to the mind.

The problem I had with the prequels was that they expanded on characters that already existed in a dull, childish, uninteresting manner. So, I'm for showing an expansion of the universe, just not really anything that has been written, yet. Or, at least, not written about in-depth.

Whatever happens, nothing will top my love for the original series.

But I honestly hope that it is good, because I would like to think that George Lucas hasn't lost all his talent. The little TV series he has out isn't terrible (for a kids show), so maybe he has some chance of making it great.

And just like that, every Star Wars Novel is rendered completely non-canon.

Ha.

I'd love to see a movie based around Rogue or Wraith Squadron if only to see characters rely on their wits instead of lightsaber combos.

If they gotta have Jedi, it oughta involve Knights of the Old Republic or Saba Sebatyne. I'll take either one.

Best would be to have something original and new, or at least something different. I have some hopes for this, not high hopes, but some. If the rumors are true.

I'm with you, other than the first of the prequels they were generally of good quality, and arguably better than the originals (the originals have not aged well at all, regardless of how much I love them). I'd love to see a trilogy of the Expanded Universe, though I'd have preferred to see a trilogy based on the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, or the Truce at Bakura rather than the far future stuff where the Sith pretty much run things again.

Didn't his wife divorce him after the third movie, or did he remarry and I wasn't looking?

More on topic, I'm torn between "yay! More lightsabers without those God awful continuity issues!" and "DEAR GOD! ABANDON SHIP! THE DRUNK CAPTAIN'S AT THE HELM AGAIN!"

Prequels were better, if it keeps going in the same direction this next one will be even better.
