Polyphony Already Working on Gran Turismo 6

Polyphony Already Working on Gran Turismo 6

The long-awaited Gran Turismo 5 isn't even on shelves, but developer Polyphony Digital has already started work on its sequel.

Gran Turismo 5 isn't quite on the level of Duke Nukem Forever when it comes to eternally-delayed, highly-anticipated sequels, but it's close. At this past E3 2010, the racing sim was finally given a concrete release date - a concrete release date which turned out to be not so concrete after all.

Earlier this week, we learned that the long-awaited racer had gone gold at last and that the discs were being printed that very instant. The news that they might be sitting behind the wheel by the holidays thrilled PS3 owners, but Polyphony isn't content with just resting on its laurels for now - the developer has already started work on the inevitable sequel.

When asked by Autoweek if the classic 1969 Chevy Camero would make it into Gran Turismo 6 (as opposed to the game they'd just completed), Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that it would - and that development on the game was already under route.

"It's not something that we can talk that lightly on," said Yamauchi. "It took 2,000 days to get all the ideas that went into GT5. It's just too early to be talking about GT6." According to Yamauchi, the reason for Gran Turismo 5's many delays was to "adjust it so it would be perfect."

Gran Turismo 5 is expected to see release by the end of the year. We can look forward to Gran Turismo 6 sometime in 2015, shortly after the release of Diablo III and Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

If 5 gets delayed again, they really have no excuses.

Yay :D

Half Life Episode 3 in 2015!

Earlier than I expected.

I'm pretty sure it won't be delayed again, especially since the series creator has confirmed that the discs are currently in production as of two days ago.

Won't the Playstation 4 be out before GT6 is done?

Shouldn't 5 be out on shelves before the sequel is thought of?

Corohan:

it will be out be for GT5 is out

To be fair to them, the GT6 that is "underway" probably is just a list of things that they couldn't fit into this game but have said "let's put that in the 6!"

Considering GT5's track record, that means very little.

It's probably more along the lines of:
"Oh crap! The racing sim fans want damage and in-car views whattawedo?"

"Just shoe-horn them in for this one and maybe try and make them actually good in the next!"

"Genius!"

Thus GT6 begins development :P

I came in prepared to burn, but Mr. Funk already laid it out with more grace than I can muster.

Nah, PD's going to continue to tweak this engine for some time to come. That's typically how they do things anyway. They'll likely get a bigger head start on their new engine for the next console, though, if the architecture is as incompatible to their existing engine as the PS3 was.

Precisely what I was thinking!

Jeez, those guys just don't stop, eh? That's what I call dedication.

As for GT5, I'm not super excited for it, but I'm still excited to get my hands on it. I've been hankerin' for a racing game for some time now.

GT5's discs have gone gold and are being stomped right now, so now we just have to complain if GT6 gets delayed :P

I remember seeing a documentary about how the Gran Turismo team worked. 'Twas highly enlightening.

Those guys are obsessive in their work, even by Japanese standards. I admire their work despite not liking racing games, and I wonder if GT6 will be done before the PS3's cycle ends...

Will be looking forward to GT5 though! ^_^

At least we know what ENN is gonna cover this week.

To be fair, FFXIV was officially announced at E3 before FFXIII was released... so just contemplating the design, etc, isn't as bad as one might think :P

And besides, companies are often already working on the sequel product once the current product has been released - this isn't just for gaming, it's also for the computer industry, etc.

It's not exactly unheard of, to be fair on Polyphony :)

It's not an excuse for the constant delays though! *mumble under breath*

must resist insulting impatient gamers.... so difficult!

Why do we even need a GT6? If GT5 is perfect, we will never need another racing sim (or another game at all).

On the other hand, if its not perfect, WHAT THE HELL HAVE THEY BEEN DOING!?

GT5's discs are made of gold, which has caused the delay. In order to make each and every Gran Turismo 5 game perfect, it has a gold-freaking-disc. The delays can mostly be attributed to figuring out exactly how to get gold discs to function properly, but it will totally be worth the wait.

Which is still nothing though, GT6 will spit diamonds out of your PS4

I don't think they should be thinking about number 6 if 5 hasn't even been released yet.

See, but if they're gold, then we have to worry about pirates! Not software pirtes, but old school pirates! Somalian pirates! As the games are shipped from Japan, the ships are STOLEN! And then they have to delay the release!

This just in from Polyphony:
"The Gran Tursimo 5 delay has been additionally attributed to the private contracting of professional assassins to protect every individual copy of the game."

Sheesh, I don't quite care how realistic it is, will driving in circles be even worth it by the time we're done here?!? :P

The game to ages because it was inscribed on the discs using unicorns horns and fairy blood. That takes a lot of time. In all honesty ive played both GT and Forza series and Forza has been the most fun in driving and feel of the car. GT has always been impressive with the detail and grahpics but they is something bland about them as if the time went more into the little things instead of the gameplay. I think its truely a game for car lovers and gear heads who can get more out of all the little changes made by raising or lowering the car etc Me, im not interested in all that tech stuff, i just pick a car and race, then add stuff to make it faster or better and race more. Thats why i prefer Forza.

The only thing i wanted them to change is how you can turn corners by crashing off other cars at the last minute or by scrapping along the corner at a certain angle. For a company making the ultimate driving simulation this issue always seemed wrong and retarded that they would allow it. This may have been changed in GT4 although i never played that one.

"We are starting on GT6" and so the hype machine starts. lol

GT6 - there will be hover cars as well. :-)

It wasn't changed. They even went backwards in AI with Tourist Trophy. And maybe the cockpits will be in GT6, at last. if PGR, FM3 and cheaper games have it, isn't that a must?

This is why games like this and Fable bug me. All this talk of improvements and fun additions and they still do not change the things that annoy the fans.

I doubt they'll miss my business much, but yeah, it's been 12 years. You might think they're start caring about "racing" in a driving game at some point.

I can't blame people for wanting all these cars (without a cockpit, wtf) and tracks, but why don't they care about the racing?

I never thought I'd love FM3 so much, but if FM4 tweaks a few things and has more cars on track, GT will be left behind for good.
