EA Unveils New Free-to-Play Battlefield Game

EA has taken some of the best elements of previous Battlefield games and fused them together for its newest free-to-play experience.

Following on from its success with the cartoony third person shooter Battlefield Heroes, EA is once again diving into the waters of free-to-play games with Battlefield Play4Free, a realistic, team-based military shooter, designed to run in a browser.

Battlefield P4F takes some of the maps of 2005's Battlefield 2, tweaks them to run better on lower spec computers, and then fuses them with weapons, factions and classes of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Players will also be able to pilot some fairly impressive military hardware, like helicopters, jets, and tanks. EA says that it is working of making a lot of "cool connections" between Battlefield P4F, Battlefield Heroes and the upcoming Battlefield 3, and suggests that anyone planning on getting BF3 would be well served by getting into Battlefield P4F as soon as possible.

The game will be supported by microtransactions, much in the same way that Battlefield Heroes is, but EA recognizes that the majority of players aren't going to buy anything. "Five per cent of the audience buys stuff. 95 per cent of people never spend any money at all," explained Ben Cousins, head of Battlefield developer DICE's free-to-play division Easy Studios. "Those guys fund the experience for everyone else. It's a classic free-to-play business model, which we're really comfortable with and we've got really good at now."

The closed beta for Battlefield P4F starts on November 30th, and EA is accepting applications right now on the game's website. There's no word when EA plans to fully launch the game, although an open beta is scheduled for early next year.

Strike at Karkand returns!

Such a popular map for infantry only servers.

Worth a try I guess.

Signed up for beta

So, I get to play like a billion more rounds of Strike at Karkand.

That makes me happy. That makes me very happy indeed.
If it takes the good bits of BF2 and mashes in some good bits of BC2 then it'll have me very excited for BF3, as well as being well on my way to Acronym Hell!

The remix of the "MEC map loading" theme gave me chills.

So this is basically an updated version of Battlefield 2? Count me in.

C'mon, everyone just calls it AH.

Now THIS looks good! BC2 could have been much better with better maps. BF2 having some of the best maps of any FPS i've ever played, this makes me happy. And the price is right, so hell yes.

Also signed up.
Sounds really nice.
Though I don't like Heroes at all.
BF2 and such is good :)

Thats one of my favorite maps ever. I just love it.

OT: All I want from Battlefield 3 are Battlefield Commanders. Crossing my fingers hoping it has 'em.

What I want (what I realy realy want) is to have the TOW launchers back.

They were immensely satisfying weapons. Especially on those magic moments when you felled a helicopter or a jet with one, followed shortly by maniacal laughter from all sides.

=D

I loved BF2 to death so I'm intrested indeed.

Free FPSing that's like the almighty and awesome BF2? HELL YEAH.

And the Battlefield theme played on electric guitar?

Sign me up (Y)

I'm willing to give most Free to Play games at least a chance and this seems like as long as it isn't a too far stripped down version it should be pretty great.

Russians again? Oh Jebus.

Well, at least it's free to play. I might try it when it comes out.

Battlefield 2 maps? Oh, great, great, great.

If you take the command system from that game, too, EA, I'm going to supply you with a ton of cash for this game.

Oh, classic Battlefield theme, how I have missed thee. Screw Bad Company for depriving me of such

I'm glad they're revisiting BF2; that game was awesome.

Graphics downgrade? ... Me smells a cloud computing scheme in the works ...

Just one question.

How the fuck is this supposed to run in a browser? I hope that was just a misunderstanding for "it launches from the browser."

So do I. I want the Spec Ops to get the C4s, not the snipers mainly. I love to use the C4 and sneak up on the tanks, but I like to be able to keep my own in a fight without having to use a pistol. Also I want planes. Yeah, I miss planes.

Anyway, seems intresting enough. May as well try it when it comes out.

Probably like Quake Live, the site installs a plugin/ActiveX control/whatever that is basically a game client. It does the rendering and sound and gets input, but runs in a browser window. It works.

god i got sick of strike at karkand after a while..

I'm guessing they're going to use Punkbuster again?

God, Punkbuster ruined Battlefield Heroes. It's a great game, I used to play it ALL the time and even spent money on it, but Punkbuster kicks me out of every other match. I tried everything, and it still happens.

I'm not buying any more multiplayer EA games until they rid of that God-awful anti-cheating program.

looks good but why does everything have to be in a friggin browser, means you have the overhead of the browser on top of the game. whats wrong with a nice lightweight dedicated client? hopefully they'll offer both.

Will they remove the Gustav, or at least nerf it?

Yay, MEC Theme.

I guess its kind of cool, although BF2 Complete Collection is pretty cheap now, and with all the mods is kind of hard to let it go. (See Forgotten Hope 2, Project Reality, AIX 2, BF2 Assault, Point of Existance and others)

Also the microtransactions may limit the gameplay. You probably have to pay for new weapons.

That music can make me do bad things....
Looks like a cool idea, and the hints of getting into BF3's BETA are the icing on the cake.

They're making Battlefield 3?

FUCK. YES.

Oh, this is cool too, I'll sign up for it later.

Very nice remix of the original Battlefield theme:

That said, I don't know how to feel about this game. It looks preety nice, but I am not sure if a browser-based game can really capture the fundamentals of a Battlefield game (such as the large...eh ehm, battlefields).

Seems like I'm the only one uninterested. After trying that horrible mess of a game that is Battlefield Heroes, I just can't get interested in this.

You're not alone. The bullshit that has happened to BF Heroes is ridiculous. They bump up the prices of VP guns to ridiculous extremes, and then give super powered weapons to people who pay. Thats a great way of balancing the game morons.

I had BF2, never got to use the online though, looks good though.

Jets? Finally? Hell yes. I just hope they don't pull any stupid shit like the ability to buy better weapons though.

Almost missed this piece of news...These guys are crazy I am SO trying this game out. :D

Awesome song in the backround amirite?
