Creator of Uncharted Picks Ico As "Best PlayStation Game"

You can add Naughty Dog president Evan Wells to the list of game-makers who idolize the 2001 PS2 game, Ico.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was a pretty amazing game by all accounts. It won numerous Game of the Year awards in 2009 and netted Amy Hennig a Writer's Guild Award for Best Videogame Writing for her work on the game. Uncharted 2 was also recently voted as the "Best PlayStation Game" in a poll conducted by Official PlayStation Magazine. Despite all of that fanfare for the PlayStation exclusive starring Noloan North as Nathan Drake, the president and CEO of Naughty Dog thinks that the action-adventure from Fumito Ueda, Ico, as well as Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 3, was more influential than either Uncharted.

"They're pretty different games, but they've both influenced the industry tremendously," said Evan Wells. "[Ico is] the kind of game - that linear, narrative-driven experience - that we're focused on making right now."

"Everyone in the office has been influenced by it greatly; it's just a fantastic game."

Wells was glad that Uncharted 2 received all of the attention that it did, and he believes the awards give him the chance to create similarly excellent games. "[Story-driven games] are very difficult and costly, but I hope people are now realizing how story can really elevate the gaming experience," he said.

From Wells' words, it's clear that Fumito Ueda's game Ico still has a profound effect on the videogame industry. Last week, Peter Molyneux praised it by saying, "If I made something like Ico, I'd be very happy to die." The fact that the game generally poorly, especially in the United States, is especially interesting.

Brian Eno famously said, "The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band." I wonder if, years from now, Ico will thought of the same way.

I don't know if ICO was the best PS game ever but it is definitely in my top 5 games for the PS of any generation. Nice to see people give credit to this under appreciated game.

Also a typo "the fact that the game generally poorly"

It is an awesome game. Just so....different.

I do prefer SoTC, but hey. They're both cool :P

Yeh fair enough I guess Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are still two of the most highly regarded games of all time. I liked it's minimalistic / subtractive design. but it did seem a bit misogynistic at times even if it does make perfect sense in the context of story itself

Eh. Didn't like the game at all.

To each their own.

I know that you are are your worst judge, but what about the Jak series?

Ico is a great little game. It's not the best, but it's just so cozy and unique.

Can't wait for the collection.

Yeah Shadow of the Colossus was more action and adventure enticing for me...

Agreed, Ico was more of an Explore game that had little action, I do appreciate the fact it brough about Shadow of the Colossus which is by far my superb fave for the Playstation

The Jak series got stale at 3. That and it was way to similar to Ratchet and Clank. Ico is easily the better game and at least Evan Wells isn't a guy with his head stuck up his ass.

Cant they release the HD upscale to the PS3 already? I want to try Ico and SoTC already.

Madara XIII:
GIANT FREAKING MONSTER snip

Indeed - When every screenshot from a game is as awesome as this one, you know you have a good game.

It was a fine game indeed, but not the best. That said, I love Team Ico and cannot wait for The last Guardian.

I can't wait for the Team ICO Collection and The Last Guardian to come out, I have yet to play ICO so I am really excited for that.

Now all we need is a "Jak and Daxter" and "Ratchet and Clank", and it would be awesome.
