Valve Heralds New Portal 2 Delay as Its Shortest Ever

MelasZepheos:
This is not the sort of thing to celebrate.

It reminds me of the XKCD strip, a primary school teacher reassuring people he wears a condom while teaching. Strictly speaking it's better than the alternative but someone somewhere is doing their job very wrong. (Okay so it doesn't really but I wanted to use that quote somewhere)

Just being 'a little less late than usual' is not something to boast about, because you are still late. Sometimes it seems like Valve are the only ones who can get away with this, and I really do wonder why. If Bioware announced a 14 month delay on Mass Effect 3, or didn't even give a release date at all and just said 'I dunno, when it's done.' People would be denouncing them and burning effigies of Shepard in the street, so why does Valve get a free pass?

Valve can get away with it because...

A) They're not a publicly traded company so they don't have to answer to stock holders with product releases or even original IP's.

B) The quality in their products when released, and even the support post-release, far surpasses any other developer.

isnt it Obama's favorite game?
Maybe he can give Valve some "motivation" to finish it?

Don't worry, Valve time is accurate.
They'll have another delay.
It's practically already decided.

mParadox:
damn.. :(

And to think it was going to be released on my birthday! D:

It's my birthday, though that's assuming no more Valve time

Well, give me more time to save up to buy it.

Also, you forgot that it's also coming out on the Mac.

Simalacrum:
Only 2 months?

Valve, I'm almost disappointed in you for such a short delay! You're breaking my expectation of playing this sometime in 2013 :P

Exactly. When I saw this on my RSS feed I was like "Here goes another x amount of years." Behold, it's only months. Nice job Valve, but you are breaking tradition here.

It's not making this new date, either.

Stop bloody mocking Valve, some of them may be reading these posts and then we'll get Portal 2 in 2015 something.

I'll be extremely shocked if it comes out in April.

That said I'm still not that excited for it yet. But maybe I'm just bitter about Episode 3.

I think l4d games arrived on time.

Sigh...why am I both disappointed and still not surprised?

Thank fuck for that!

I get about 1 game per month and the spring 2011 window is getting packed with awesome games mass effect 2, littlebigplanet 2, bulletstorm, dragon age 2, deus ex 3 and L.A Noire. I'm starting to worry that there will be a drought through summer and autumn next year. So it's nice to see the awesome spread out more evenly across the year. Even if it's still being released in the same month as deus ex.

well at least its only months and not years so admittldy valve has good intentions but ill believe it when i see it!

TheRightToArmBears:
Do you think Valve might just learn one of these days and either A) Not give a release date until the disks are being printed or B) Give a really late prediction.

I actually think they're doing this with Episode 3, primarily because of the possibility that it's Half-life 3, because when they announced Half-life 2 in 2003 someone hacked their internal network and stole a bunch of their source code. Better safe then sorry.

I blame Stephen Merchant.

Valve has crazy goodwill, which is not something a lot of companies can say. they can release it whenever they want. we can tell them how to run their business as much as we want, but the fact of the matter is, they have pulled of something thousands of companies before them could not. i have a feeling they will politely dismiss our suggestions.

the people who set deadlines, the people who write the story, the people who create the engine and levels, the people who record the VO, the people who edit content, the people who decide what to reiderate and change, etc, are not the same people.

"To achieve great things, two things are needed; a plan, and not quite enough time."
-Leonard Bernstein

Does this really count as only a 2-month wait, given that when the game was first announced, it was slated to be released... uh... now, ish?

Bad news for gamers? Its not like its cancelled.
It will be out when it will be done.
DOesnt really matter if release date is moved or not, in the end we will get the game.

"This is obviously disappointing, but Valve has so much goodwill among gamers it's hard to imagine too many people getting mad at the company."
Just you wait....
Disappointing alright, but now it's coming out a week before my birthday. Anybody who's not looking forward to this game is not a real gamer.....Yea I said it!

Obviously it's because they hadn't finished the GLADos hats for TF2 yet.

I wouldn't say it's so much a free pass as it is expected. They've set this up as their method of doing things from early on. Plus, their delays usually result in a quality title. It's the same way Blizzard gets away with it.

"It's done when it's done," is a big promise that requires a big payoff to get away with. If they didn't bring out quality material to back it up people wouldn't accept it and sales would reflect that.

Blizzard has been getting away with that for a long while now. Diablo 3? Starcraft 2? Patch day for WoW? All of that would be ridiculous for a lesser company, but Blizzard delivers great games... just like valve. Portal 2 has a very high probability of being a great game, so most people will forgive a few months of delay. I know I will. If portal blows, though, valve will lose a lot of credit with me.

Blizzard already learn from it's mistakes, Valve haven't yet. Personally I don't really care as long as they release some day.

Starcraft 2 offical release date was never push back, they give us a 7/28 and stick to it,(mainly because they announce the release date when the CD are getting printed.)

I think Valve should do the same, tell us a release date when they are certian they can make it. For example, when the CD is getting printed.

Rather have it late and polished to a glistening shine then, not. cough/Obsidian\cough

I'm sorry, couldn't hear you over Fallout: New Vegas. Lemme know when the Perpetual Lateness Brigade finishes Half Life 2: Episode 3, would ya?

Logan Westbrook:
Besides, two months is nothing compared to the three years - and counting - we've been waiting for Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

And three years is nothing compared to the wait for Half Life 2, which was 6 years

I'm sure someone said it before me, but here I go:

About this delay, Valve... I'm not even angry. I'm being *so* sincere right now.

But This was coming out 3 days after my birthday!, valve I hate you somethimes!

Just got a mental image of me talking to my hypothetical grandchildren in the future.

Whats that son? The game you have been waiting for has been delayed by a week? thats nothing compared to what we had to deal with back in 2010.... Valve delayed Half life episode 3 for 8 years (yeah I know its not that long but thats when it will probably come out lol)

Parents have a nasty habit of saying things were hard in their day whilst also saying things were good i.e. no crime.... yeah i know figure that out... its an annoying tradition I will continue if I have kids of my own, got to get back at them somehow :)

Valve: Now slightly less shit with promises.

falloutNV has encountered a problem and needs to close

My god, you too?

Valve must have it in for us <_<

I'd care, except I've never been a huge fan of Valve anyway. Never cared for Half-Life's style of gameplay, and while Portal was brilliant, I don't feel a huge urge to return to it.

It is pretty funny that a two month delay is their shortest delay in over ten years of game development.

-is still waiting for Team Fortress 360 updates-

Should I just give up?

Lono Shrugged:
I blame Stephen Merchant.

YEAH, he spends too much time making fun of Karl Pilkington! Let's complain!

Anyone else here watch the Ricky Gervais Show? (seriously hopes so) :3

Yes, it's another two months of waiting, but I'd rather have a game released that is complete than a game that was two months from completion.

I mean, look at Fallout: New Vegas; what could they have gotten done had they received an extra two months on that project?

I like the idea that Valve don't even take their release dates seriously anymore.

"Oop! Our game's delayed! Ah well! Could be worse! Could have a nother Ep3 on our hands! Woop woop!"

XD

Thanks Valve. That gives us hope for the future.
They don't operate on release dates. Only release suggestions.

Just in case you don't know he voices a helpful but odd robot in the game. So yay!
