Minecraft Creator Notch Calls in to LRR's Desert Bus

image

The creator of independent sensation Minecraft called in and spoke to the Loading Ready Run gang as they play Desert Bus.

If you've ever wanted to watch several Canadians squee on internationally broadcast internet video, then you should have been watching the Desert Bus for Hope live video feed about an hour ago. For those of you who don't know, Desert Bus for Hope raises money for Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity by playing the Sega CD game Desert Bus for as long as people will donate. The whole process is broadcast over the internet and users can join a chat room and ask them to do funny things for a small donation. Today, a recognizable name popped up in the IRC chat and the crafty Paul Saunders had to ask, "Is this the real Notch?" In response, Markus Persson (aka Notch) used his Twitter account to say that it was in fact him. The Loading Ready Run gang then got him to call into the show and asked him all kinds of questions about Minecraft and his plans. Persson also donated $2000 to Desert Bus for Hope, which is just plain awesome.

"(I am _notch in the desertbus.org chat thingie)" Persson wrote on his Twitter feed to verify his existence.

Persson said that he was a big fan of Loading Ready Run and that he tuned in to watch some of their antic in last year's Desert Bus for Hope marathon session. Talking quietly so as not to wake up his fiancée who was sleeping in the next room (it was the middle of the night in Stockholm, Sweden), Persson let loose a few nuggets about Minecraft. He programmed it in Java because that's the computer language that he knew. A big update is being worked on as we speak, but he is also busy working on a new game.

All in all, it was a cool moment and it drew nearly all of staff in The Escapist office into the room that we have streaming Desert Bus for Hope to watch it unfold. Let that be a lesson to you, you should never stop watching Desert Bus. You never know who is going to call in, just today there's been call-ins Gabe from Penny Arcade, me and Susan Arendt in addition to Notch.

Who's gonna call tomorrow?

It's good to see he's putting that money he's earned to good use.

God bless the man.

Thats pretty damn awesome. He made a great game and donated for a good cause.

He makes $300,000 dollars every week off of Minecraft and that's all he could donate? Cheap bastard.

I kid, I kid. Good of the man.

I'm wondering what this new game he's working on...

Hooray for Notch! :D

Please tell me that was being recorded.

Please tell me all the call-ins were recorded.

Damnit! i missed it D=

I hope that was recorded

I knew something like this would happen. I stop watching Desert Bus for one day and something cool like this happens.

And here's me still having NO idea what this Desert Bus thing is. I looked at all the pages I could find, none of them actually tell you what the damn thing is! GAH

NOTCH IS A HERO TO US ALL

I am glad to contribute my 15 dollars to that cause. :)

I'm at work, and have been peeking in whenever I can get the chance (not often). I missed the Gabe one because someone started downloading a huge file and killed our bandwidth, so I heard about 2 words in 20.

Later, I'd just finished beating a huge snafu down involving a bunch of computers that were going out without anyone paying for them because the client was dragging his feet, sat down at my PC... and got to see the last 10 seconds of Notch's phone call.

DAMN DEADBEAT CLIENTS!

(Please tell me someone recorded it.)

It's the most boring game ever made. Desert Bus For Hope is a charity event where LRR plays it as long as you force them to. Come on, it's been all over the site for days.

these should help hopefully.

Basically they play desert bus until people stop giving them money, and on the way they take challenges from viewers to do crazy stuff for money, and do live and silent auctions, all to raise money for Child's Play.

They're running rather low on HD space. I don't remember if they had room to record it. The only call-in I know for sure they recorded is Penn's. I'm sure a viewer recorded Notch's call so it should be up on Youtube eventually.

Dude, Google is your friend.

The Desert Bus site, in all its bus-y desert-y glory-y
EDIT Wow, ninja'd faster than a low bid on a Tetris afghan.

I remember them saying something about that yesterday. Figured they fixed that issue. Could be wrong though.

Either way, hope it was recorded.

This absolutely made my day.

I was watching Desert Bus with my morning coffee and the idea struck me to try and spread some awareness, so I contacted MC Frontalot on Facebook and tried to send a few messages to Notch on Twitter and I guess the same idea occurred to others.

It probably wasn't my tweet this morning within a sea of tweets that was the catalyst and more an internet hive mind thing, so huge word goes to @Axe9 who is the one that finally made Notch aware of the Desert Bus Event.

The internet can be a truly beautiful thing sometimes.

The look on the LRR Crews face when Notch entered chat and when he agreed to the interview was priceless. With all you guys are doing for Charity its nice that us fans were able to do something for you guys in return. A lot of us were trying to make this happen, and I'm glad someone was able to get the word to where it needed to be.

In the meantime I will keep on working on Front.

Thank you guys for all you are doing and thank you Notch for being such a great guy.

Awww.. I missed it. :-( That must have been awesome.

What, did you miss when Penn of Penn & Teller chatted with 'em?

It would be cool if they could do a highlits footage or something. I've probably watched about 20 hours of desert bus total, but I need to sleep and sometimes you just miss things.

lol judging by the reactions, I'd say Notch has become Minecraft's Moot.

Notch is a babe.

Schwiiiiiing!

I missed Notch (by, like, an hour) but got to see Duke Nukem call in, and saw Sam from Sam and Fuzzy fame.

So, it wasn't all that bad.

Unfortunately, where I live they measure how much internets is being used, and a live feed surprisingly takes up quite a bit. A Steam update running at the same time also might have contributed. Time really does go quite quickly when you're watching the feed.

With the amount of love /tg/ has for Minecraft you have no idea how right that observation is.

Watching Alex totally freak out was pretty hilarious.

WHOS GONNA CALL.....

GHOSTBUSTERS

I thought it was $350,000 a day?

That said, $2,000 is way more than I can donate, so definitely congratulations to him. I bet the call was hilarious too...:P

Well, he is paying Swedish taxes, so he probably clears about $50 when it's all said and done.

I missed all this because I was asleep during the night, unlike Notch. Most of the guests seem to come when I'm offline, missed Duke Nukem to. :< Still watched a few hours over the week, been funny so far.

How.
Did.
I.
MISS THIS!?

This better have been recorded somehow. I swear.

I managed to catch it! Very unexpected! It was late in the UK at the time he rang, so i was rather lucky.
He sounds liek a genuinly nice guy. He said he may ring up again sometime!

They did record it, Alex was running around frantically to make sure he did.

Thank god.

Im impressed that not one person has trolled, "Should be spending more time working on Minecraft than talking to LRR..." :P

Awesome gesture from Notch though, nothing but the utmost respect for the guy!
