Halo: Reach Players Depopulate the Earth Five Times Over

Halo: Reach Players Depopulate the Earth Five Times Over

Turns out that you can get a heck of a lot of killing done in twenty-four thousand years.

Bungie has released a new infographic which shows that through a combination of multiplayer and single-player games, Halo: Reach players have killed around 33 billion things, or five times the population of planet Earth, since the game's release in September.

The majority of the kills understandably come from the single player game, which you might describe as a "target rich" environment, but still around a quarter of the kills - or 9 billion - game from matchmade, multiplayer games. Bungie splits the kills down into categories, breaking them into specific types of Covenant troops for the single-player kills, and specific kill methods for the multiplayer. Nearly half of the Covenant deaths in single-player were Brutes, for example, and players scored 87 million multiplayer kills from beyond the grave.

Also included in the statistics are tidbits like the total time spent in-game (24,000 years), how many multiplayer games Bungie employees have lost (23,000), and a breakdown of kill sprees and multi-kill awards. If you want to check out the rest of the stats for yourself, you can see the full infographic here.

I will admit that I'm always a little amazed at how fast the numbers for big games like Halo: Reach grow. 24,000 years translates into roughly 210 million hours, and that's a lot of time for players to invest in just three months.

87 million kills from the grave?

Halo: Reach is haunted, call an exorcist!

I like the Sniper kills, most of my kills come from the sniper XD

Still it's amazing how so much has been done in like 3 months...i would love to see these numbers for COD4/WAW, Even single player games like Fallout and Just Cause 2.

Hang on, Bungie reckon that 23 million people have got 20 kills in a row but that only 4.7 million have got 15 in a row? Last time I checked you had to go past 15 to get to 20! Are we sure Bungie aren't just making these numbers up?

Coming to an anti-video games article near you.
I swear it!

Not really, it only counts when the streak ends. It doesn't count all the lesser streaks gained along the way.

I think that is a typo on their part :P Their are 2 20 kill without dying medals :P

I think Killing Frenzy is meant to be 10 kills without dying.

I'm pretty sure it does, you know. If I get a Hell's Janitor medal during a match I'm also awarded the Zombie Killing Spree medal as well. Either that or I'm doing better in games than I think...

Haha I love these statistics, always give me a good ol' laugh. I wouldn't mind contributing...There's always real life...

Oh yeah, just seen that myself. Well noticed! That explains it then.

9 billion real player deaths is the more significant number! so it would take less than 3 months to murder the whole world. Good to know XD

I look forward to see Black Ops stats at the end of the year.

I think my favorite part of Reach is the data mining/analysis.

Those are constantly displayed in a lobby for the game. They're considerably less interesting.

Oops, the article says that almost half the Covenant kills have been Brutes, when they should have said Grunts.

I want to see this for Left 4 Dead 2
In the first week of the Passing DLC, over 5 million zombies (IIRC) were killed.
Okay, they're using zombies so it's kind of cheating, but in Reach your a power-armored superman who can kill by staring at something for 5 seconds!

Not just the little info snippets you get in the lobby, but an overall stat chart. Like killstreaks earned, deatsh by certain guns etc.

Think what we could achieve!

What is this "Real Life" that you speak of? When does it comes out? What Platform is it on? Does it have a Special or Legendary Edition?

LOL!!!!

hey so all my "mindless" killing really did matter!

I do believe you have just come up with the next DLC for Reach.

Haha, I'm pretty sure my room mate was a big part of those numbers, he spent so much time on that game. All the achievements and he still plugs away at that game.

Yes I saw this too. Maybe they put it there so we'd notice and feel smarter than them. Or maybe, just maybe Bungie are lonely and want people to spam them with emails about it so they feel better. The real answer is probably really boring.

Honestly I think we could of done better. 9 billion multiplayer kills doesn't sound like much compaired to the 24 billion dead covenant littering the surface of Reach.

Speaking of which I wonder what would happen to the planet if that many corpses were left rotting?

awesome stas

I love Bungie even more for doing stuff like this.

Nearly half of the Covenant deaths in single-player were Brutes

Probably because of that one part in Exodus where they send a crap load of them at once, and the players kept respawing. I hate that part, even on easier difficulties they constantly kill me.

You've seen the end of Reach? The green fertile plains? There you go. Ask any farmer near the Somme, they'll tell you dead bodies = fertile soil. I'd imagine all of those Skirmishers and Hunters would mulch down quite nicely.

I didn't think they sold that many copies of the game to get that much time played // This brings up a fun point, I would love to see a chart done in this fashion for World of Warcarft and Starcraft // Iff Blizzard have this info please share it with us

Are you joking? I'm pretty sure that it came quite close to MW2, for a Exclusive title anyway.

My. God.

Soccer moms everywhere crying, "My Johnny has killed 33-billion people?!"

Players also earned 900 trillion credits.

Hm... I feel this is appropriate:
