Jack Thompson: "I'm Surprised I Lasted That Long"

Anti-videogame crusader and former attorney Jack Thompson has found a new calling as an author and member of an online seminary, and maybe a little perspective on the years he spent fighting the entertainment industry as well.

In the short history of the videogame industry, John Bruce "Jack" Thompson stands out as a truly unique figure. His colorful tirades, bizarre courtroom antics and single-minded determination to expose the game industry as a leading corrupter of the world's youth made him Public Enemy Number One in the eyes of many, while at the same time cementing his reputation as an irrelevant blowhard. When he was finally and forever disbarred in September 2008, gamers everywhere were happy to be rid of him, yet for some of us the moment was almost bittersweet because we knew we would never again have a man like Thompson to kick around.

He's made a little noise in the two years since, suing Facebook, yelling at Bobby Kotick and claiming credit for the removal of the Taliban as a playable faction in Medal of Honor. But Thompson, who said he believes he had an influence on public policy during his the years in the legal system, has also been filling some time working on a book, Social Activism 101, which he's co-writing with University of Miami School of Education Professor Eugene Provenzo.

"I could write a book on how to get disbarred, but it probably wouldn't sell as well," he added.

His odd behavior, particularly in the waning years of his legal career, led some observers to conclude that Thompson was suffering from psychological issues, but Provenzo said the truth is that he was simply too smart for his enemies. "The Bar has gone after him a number of times and tried to say that he has psychiatric problems," he said. "But he is one of the sanest people I know."

A couple of years away from the fight may have left Thompson a little more circumspect about the whole thing. Along with writing his book, he's also joined the Reformed Theological Seminary, where his worldview might find more ready acceptance. "Some people probably thought I should have kept my view of the world within the religious cloister and not out in the public sphere," he said. "But I had a responsibility to try to be God's voice in the world."

"I'm a pain in the neck to a lot of people," he continued. "Thirty-one years fighting with the bar and the entertainment industry is a pretty good run. I'm surprised that I lasted that long."

tl;dr: He admits he was a RL troll.

For clarification, God does not frown on video games any more than movies or comics.

But anyways, if he's "too smart for his enemies", please explain the intense fail that was the Sims 2 "controversy". Or his being disbarred.

I'm glad he is starting to realize that what he was doing was a bit stupid. Though, he doesn't really seem to get just how dumb he sounded. I'm sure he'll see in time.

Still, its good to see he's done bothering the industry. California took over his job.

I dont want anymore news about Jack Thompson unless the title is "Jack Thompson Loses Life at the Hand of a Perpetually Walking Green Turtle".

Oh, the irony.

"...I had a responsibility to try to be God's voice in the world."

Umm...

What's next?
He's going to claim he can cure the sick and heal the blind?

I think the whole world was surprised as much as you were, Mr. Thompson.

Remember the book burnings of the Crusades and Nazi Germany....let's bring those back just for this.

"Sanest people I know" "too smart for his enemies"
I... Words, can't describe the idiocy.
I really have nothing more to say, I'm just flaberghasted at the sheer insanity on display here.

Im not. Cancer did and is still doing the same thing.

Indeed. And Provenzo said that this guy was one of the sanest people he knows? Think you need some new friends...

My oh my, someone thinks a little too highly of himself.

But, just to call a truce, I'll actually buy(and actually read) the next book he releases.

You know, to prove gamers aren't heartless assholes.

Only I can have that title...

One...two...three...

That's what she said!

So he still hasn't figured out where to quit?

Same... except I'm gonna borrow it from a library, thank you very much.

Now all we need is that he shut up for good and die, not necessaraly in that particular order.

Jack Thompson:
"I'm surprised I lasted that long."

That's what he said!

All immaturity aside, though:

Professor Eugene Provenzo:
"But he is one of the sanest people I know."

...

What.

Right, right. Because sane people blame one thing and one thing only for the corruption of youth? Irrationally? Never listening to other arguments? Right.

Ehh, the dude needs the money.

Did he ever pay that, I think it was 40K he was ordered to pay?

Or am I having memory lapses?

Or... have I finally gone truly mad?

You.. avatar thievin' bastard!

OT: What does disbarred actually mean anyway? is it a court-ordered stfu?

Not this crazy Bastard again. Atleast he finally accepted that he was a pain in the ass.

Crazy plastic bastard

so hes gonna write a book, what im surprised at is that he didnt do it sooner. hes gonna make millions off this you know, even if it is just from people buying it just so they can toss it in a fire

"But I had a responsibility to try to be God's voice in the world."

Nice try. Try everything at least once, I always say

Well, a lot depends on your interpetation of God's word. To be entirely fair I don't know what his church preaches, I disagree with him, and I know a lot of people who would also, but consider there are sects out there that feel that following God's teachings pretty much involves forsaking pretty much all modern technology... like the Amish.

As far as the rest goes, yes his platform and beliefs were idiotic, but admittedly he did have to have something going on in order to have survived that long under the cirmcumstances, and I think that's the point. I don't think many people with legitimate positions could have survived against a multi-billion dollar industry and constant attempts to be disbarred for anywhre near as long as he did.

I think he believes some ridiculous things, but on some levels you have to respect the guy for sticking to his guns through all the hate even if he was wrong, and simply for being tenacious enough to not be knocked out long before it happened.

Well, he can't have mine. I'm a university student, there's no way I'm going to shell out a good chunk of my savings for anything short of Skyrim.

That's why I said "any more than movies or comics". Interpret as you will, but I highly doubt that Jack Thompson is against movies.

Okay... is it just me, or does this Jack Thompson sound a fair bit more pleasant than the lunatic from a few years ago?

OT: What does disbarred actually mean anyway? is it a court-ordered stfu?

Disbarment(With personal touches in pink):

Disbarment is the removal of a lawyer from a bar association and/or the practice of law, thus revoking his or her law license and/or admission to practice law.
Procedures vary depending on countries.

Jack Thompson, the Florida lawyer noted for his activism against video games, was permanently disbarred for various charges of misconduct(No shit, Wikipedia). The action was the result of several grievances claiming that Thompson had made defamatory, false statements and attempted to humiliate, embarrass, harass or intimidate his opponents(Understatement of the century, and failed at every damn one). The order was made on September 25, 2008, effective October 25. However, Thompson attempted to appeal to the higher courts in order to avoid the penalty actually taking effect(Not so fast, Jacko).[9] Neither the US District court, nor the US Supreme Court[10] would hear his appeal, rendering the judgement of the Florida Supreme Court final(This video perfectly sums it up).

So... yeah.

Sounds more like he's admitting to being a troll than reflecting on his legal career.

Oh I believe he is sane; he's not crazy, he's just an asshole

Andy Chalk:
"I'm Surprised I Lasted That Long"

Ohh, ohh, things Jack Thompson says after sex!

I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist that.

OT: So what, does this mean he'll finally shut up and leave us alone now?

He's not doing God's will. I think most Christians would agree, there's nothing Christian about submitting gay porn as evidence.

P.S. Thanks

So are we Jackie, so are we.

Oh, and for the love of all that is holy, please keep God out of this.

*Obligatory sex joke here*

Don't you mean thirty one years of failing to fight the bar and the entertainment industry jack?

I'm surprised too. And sane is hardly a word I would use to describe a singleminded, uphill crusade against an entire industry on no concrete claims at all, pursued from a nonexistent moral high ground in a manner that makes him a bigger joke to the concept of God than anything he ever fought against.
