Marvel Hires Writer for Black Panther Film

Marvel Hires Writer for Black Panther Film

Marvel Studio has hired a screenwriter, which means T'Challa may finally be coming to a movie theater near you.

Documentary filmmaker Mark Bailey penned the television mini-series Pandemic: Facing AIDS and served as editor on documentaries such as A Boy's Life and Ghosts of Abu Ghraib. Now Marvel Studios has decided he's the one to bring Black Panther to the silver screen. The Hollywood Reporter believes that Bailey, whose next project is an adaptation of the non-fiction The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon, "brings realism and grittiness to the project."

This won't be the first time a studio has tried to get a Black Panther project off the ground. In the 1990s, Wesley Snipes was on board to star as Black Panther in what The Hollywood Reporter calls "an Indiana Jones-style adventure." The property has been bounced around since then, jumping from Columbia Pictures (The Fifth Element) to Artisan Entertainment (Requiem for a Dream) to Lionsgate (the Saw series). Then Lionsgate purchased Artisan, then Marvel re-acquired the character license from Lionsgate. Snipes stuck with the project through its Artisan days, then dropped out.

As Marvel has just selected a writer, the film won't hit theaters for a couple years at least. Marvel, when you get to the casting stage, call up Djimon Hounsou. He's waiting patiently.

I thought they'd hire Samuel L. Jackson.

Cool. Hope they give him the sweet cape he's sadly lacking in the current animated Avengers series

When IS Wesley Snipes getting out anyway?
Hopefully in time to start shooting for this!

Here's to hoping Black Panther will be a part of a second Avengers film! Assuming the first is good enough to warrant a sequel that is.

I love the Black Panther! The only thing that makes me uneasy is "an Indiana Jones-style adventure." are we talking first three movies? Or Kingdom of the Crystal skull territory?

Is the guy still going to withhold the cure for cancer from the rest of humanity or are they going to side step that in the movie?

Well that was just Reginald Hudlin's run, which many people (myself included) dislike because how (reverse?) racist it was. Other writers like Priest did really good runs before that crap became the status quo.

The important thing to remember is Black Panther is badass because he's a super intelligent warrior king with panther god powers and super tech who takes on incredible odds. Not solely because he's black, as Hudlin would like to believe.

Fucking

Finally.

This seriously needs to happen. I'll accept this, despite the risk this may be to my health.

Think about it: can you take a Thor movie, a (hopefully good) Captain America movie, an Avengers movie and Black Panther movie without your head exploding in the stringy giblets?

We shall see...

I wholly support Digimon Izuzu for the role. Although I have never read any of the Black Panther comics, he seems important for a Avengers sequel that we all know we will get.

I honestly never ever heard of Black Panther before.

I was wondering when they would get back around to this. It'll be interesting to see who else gets slotted for movies after the Avengers comes out. Here's hoping that Fox loses Ghostrider so that a good version can come out, just like the bastardization of Hulk (2003) and then the 2008 version

I'm sure they'd love to, but he's already Nick Fury. Cant mess with continuity this early in the movie-verse.

And this. Ghost rider is awesome, and Id love to see a good version of him. They wasted so much potential in the firts one. So yes, exactly like what happened with Hulk.

I don't think anyone ASPIRES to Crystal Skull territory.

Maybe George Lucas, but I think he's got a running bet with Spielberg as to how bad he can make a movie and still break the box office.

I wonder how people unfamiliar with comics reacted to the headline...

Don't forget the inevitable Iron Man 3.

This year is looking like one continuous nerdgasm for me.

Maybe I'm confused, but right now, doesn't Marvel Studios = Disney?
I gotta say their choice of writer seems odd for the studio.

I think the best man for the job is Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, also known as Mr. Eko from Lost. The guy is a damn fine actor.

Wesley Snipes? Whew! Missed a bullet there. Just hope he doesn't get outta jail before this movie starts shooting...

Double A:

I'll be totally honest, it took me a couple seconds before it finally twigged, and I was a little disappointed that it was referring to the Marvel IP, not the Party.

Speaking of identity politics, looking forward what the genetic dead enders at the Conservative citizen council will spew about this.

It's about damn time. They should hire S├ębastien Foucan to play Black Panther. He's the dude from the awesome parkour chase in Casino Royale.

Hopefully they won't try to compensate for the lack of brand recognition by hiring only famous action movie actors. Especially considering their choice of screenwriter they have an opportunity to go outside the super hero-movie norm and do something with bigger potential.

I'd rather see Luke Cage, but this is good too!

I'd rather see night thrasher and lead it in to the New Warriors film.

Um... The story says it's not snipes anymore.

I think it's a bit of a good thing. I think snipes does a better anti-social bad-ass. Djimon would be pretty sick though
