Homefront Devs Love Dedicated Servers

Homefront will have dedicated servers for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, and developer Kaos thinks it's just the way to go.

It's hard to imagine the sort of controversy that surrounded the announcement that Modern Warfare 2 would have no dedicated servers for the PC version (not that it stopped the game from selling roughly a hojillion copies). At an event meant to show off the game's multiplayer, however, Homefront publisher THQ announced that dedicated servers were the way to go - on all platforms.

Homefront creative director Dave Votypka assured The Escapist that his studio wouldn't leave PC gamers out in the cold, either. "What we've been doing with the PC product the whole time has been to deliver PC-specific features that the community really wants," like dedicated servers, clan tools and probably moddable tools as well. "Some PC gamers have been a bit neglected - or felt a bit neglected - over the last 5 or 10 years with the consoles really rising up, and we come from that heritage."

"We know what they're looking for - the clan players, the tournament players, and the PC developers ... we have a whole PC game catered to the PC community and we'll be announcing more details pretty soon."

Meanwhile, senior designer Brian Holinka told Joystiq why dedicated servers were important, even on consoles.

You have to think about your constraints when you're making a game. If we host a server on a console, all of a sudden, that console is both server and it's playing the game. That really lowers everything: player count, the number of vehicles, everything. Dedicated servers allow us to offload all that work and basically all the client has to worry about is running the game.

As a result, said Holinka, the game could support 16-on-16 matches with every player able to summon vehicles, air strikes, and the like. Check our coverage of the Homefront multiplayer event here!

Seriously is there anything bad about this game?

THQ... you are my new gods. Kaos Studios are demi-gods.

Jeez, with every announcement from the devs that comes out, I want this game more and more... Not just because it looks cool, but because the developers definetly seem nice and actually seem to care about making the player base happy. They get +10 respect from me at least.

They did it with Frontlines so it was a bit expected

I played some Frontlines, and I didn't really enjoy it, but considering there's not going to be much consolization in this one either and it's been like four years it could be a really enjoyable game.

Before Modern Warefare 2 this wouldn't be newsworthy at all >_>

Even all these games that feature "Dedicated servers! Yey!" tend to be more and more rudimentary.

An intelligent games company?

'falls of chair'

Step back in the right direction. Hopefully the game doesn't bomb and scare other devs away from dedicated servers.

Dedicated Servers WOOHOO! Definitely worth a rent, I might even buy this game!

Also, is it bad for me to want more players?

really? 16 vs. 16 on dedicated server?

OH WOW, THAT IS SO AWESOME, I mean really I would never think that this day in age we could have 16 people versus another 16 people.

I guess I will have to take my disbelief to the servers I usually visit and tell everyone while playing 30 vs. 30 warfare!

seriously, even Black Hawk Down for the XBox had 50 vs 50, must be really pushing the envelope with this game.

UruURGHAurgAAAA!!

Oh fuck, It's all over the walls!

Serious face: This is has to be the next Cod4, there's nothing bad about it!

What? games like Starcraft 2, Heros of Newearth, and a ton more uses dedicated servers on PC.
Most PC only developer are using it all the way.

consider this, Armed Assault has the ability for Warfare, which is basically 25 vs 25 on vanilla servers that is in its own right an entirely different game.

16 vs 16 just feels too 'console' for a game that not only is on PC, but has dedicated servers, this coming form a primarily console player.

Just as long as they don't change the name of the North Koreans to "Geographically challenged Korean peninsula inhabitants of Asian descent"

Black Hawk Down? Uh... From what I googled, you mean Delta Force: Black Hawk Down? No where does it say 50 vs 50...

...yes. But many console games don't.

I was already going to rent this. I guess this is another reason.

Kudos to Kaos and THQ for not being idiots with their game.

I think my heart just skipped a beat! This game is just getting better an better!

If they can deliver their promises, power to them. It's also nice to see developers realizing that the PC gaming community is one of the most creative and neglected communities around.

Let's wait until we get to see the whole deal. Black Ops was also supposed to have dedicated servers and in the end you had to rent a server with Activision's exclusive partner.

just hope they actually rent out licenses instead of do it through some company like gameservers, so there's actually a bit more customization. but i think it's safe to say that's wishful thinking. those days seem to be long gone.

I would agree somewhat, ArmA is a fairly big game with the big maps. The scale of Homefront maps are unknown (at least I think so anyways) for now, it could possibly be the same scale as BC2, possibly a bit bigger.

Possibly because the guy in your pic.

Who doesn't love dedicated servers?

Or customization and modability?

Console game makers are learning...... slowly but surely. From maps to character skins to weapons and beyond!

And you know what, Homefront? I love you too. No homo.

its been a while and my caffeine high is still going strong, it was 50 players but it was 25 vs 25.

sadly, all the maps were horrible beyond belief since it opted for a large scale map, and there was a chance players would spawn around 13 Km from the actual map area, making everyone take an automatic death penalty unless they wanted to sprint all the way back.

still, more than what Homefront says it will have, which is sad, considering that the game was released back in 2005.

I really don't think so. I've been following this game for awhile and it just looks great.

That Guy Who Phails:

That is the way it is looking. The only real concern would be something being overpowered. But I think they would fix anything that would be OP.

And why hasn't every other console game taken this path? Seriously.

unfortunately.... because it doesnt have the same marketing push it will flop because activision or EA will probably do their best to buy up all the adspace that should have been devoted to this game :(

Oh THQ, sometimes I really do love you. Not only did you have one of the best Steam sale packages this past holiday (Every Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, Saints Row, Metro 2033, DarkSiders, Red Faction, Stalker...for $50) but it's the little things like this that just make me happy.

And honestly, 16 vs 16 sounds fine if balanced properly. I love CoD4 more than is considered healthy, but even I admit that 25 vs 25 servers can be just too chaotic and have a bit of a clogged up feel to them.

I know, isn't he great as a response magnet? I chose bobby over the troll-face because i thought the troll-face was too subtle.

Interesting.

All of these good news surrounding Homefront is piquing my interest in the game. I just might purchase this game, if only to support the developers.

We shall see...

The console guys that get into this won't ever wont to go back to the peer to peer of cod and the likes. This should set the bar which also means the devs will have to stop being lazy with the PC crowd. Loving all the stuff I hear about this game and all the cool stuff Kaos and THQ are doing here.

I saw the trailer for Homefront.

I wondered for a bit: "Where have I seen this kind of nationalist zeal before?"

It took me 30 seconds to realize: "National Socialist Germany."
