Rumor: Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Likely in 2011

image

An unnamed source has reportedly leaked all sorts of details about the rumored remake of the original Halo title.

As the new overseers of the Halo franchise, 343 Industries may have recently said that there weren't any side-stories or spinoffs currently in development, but that doesn't rule out remakes. A new rumor reconfirms talk that 343 is allegedly sprucing up a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, and puts it down for a release in the holiday season of 2011.

An unconfirmed source once again tells Joystiq that a higher resolution remake of Combat Evolved is in the works, supporting 1080p. The remake is said to be in development at Saber Interactive, known for Timeshift.

The source says the remake is undergoing a visual overhaul with entirely new art assets, but that it probably doesn't use the Halo: Reach engine. In addition, it'll support 3D for those that own a 3DTV, and will feature online co-op. As players might be used to totally different controller configurations by now, the remake will also allow players to reconfigure their controls to modern standards.

If real, the Combat Evolved remake will probably launch on November 15, 2011. All of this information is 100% unconfirmed, but 343 Industries did say that "cool new content" is coming to Halo fans in 2011. November 15 just happens to be the 10th anniversary of the launch of Combat Evolved, so an upgrade for Xbox 360 owners would make a lot of sense this year.

Of all games to remake... All the ones that need graphic overhauls, updated mechanics, 1080p, new cutscenes, and a second chance at a solid audience...

Why remake this one?

Releasing it so close to Skyrim? It may have to keep the shelf warm for a while until I've at least beaten the main story. I am glad to see HD remakes of a lot of great games, I wonder if there will be any "additions" to the game or if it will bee 100% in its original form with the exception of the graphics overhaul. I really think The Library could use a bit more variety from floor to floor. Also keeping my fingers crossed that they retain all the original voice acting.

Is this to show people that they really have been playing the same game for the past 10 years?

I mean, WHY? If you insist on carrying on with Halo, do something new with it for once.

Like I said in a similar thread. I'm skeptical and if it is true then I'll make my final judgment when see the game in action.

Also I hope that they bring in the rest of the Covenant species, their weapons, and their vehicles.

*Leaves before all the haters start bitching*

If they retconn the stupid bloody Flood out of existence I'm all for it.

Man imagine the threads whining about this the closer it gets.

Better version of a game ppl love but is outdated=awesome.

This. I actually enjoyed Halo up to the point where the Flood were revealed. After that, well, let's say I wish this franchise would burn in the pits of hell.

Also, it would be nice if you got to play Halo 1 from the viewpoint of the Covenant. But that would require work and dedication.

Fuck yeah. I played Halo CE for months with my friends seeing how is better and the campaign was also great. I hope this is true.

this could be cool but what about equipment or armor abilities?? Will they be in this game??

Interesting... It makes sense, but I am not sure if I would buy it. Yes, I consider the first Halo to be one of the best games ever, but I do not think graphical upgrades alone would convince me to buy a game that I already have and still play...

Oh, so THIS is how you get around saying you "won't continue the series".

Well played, you sneaky, sneaky monkeys.

Just leave the music intact plz

The game is still amoung the top most played on X-Fire, it's plot and mechanics hold up very well compared to modern games. Graphically it is still pretty presentable. This is one of the games i would say LEAST needs a re-make. There is also the problem that the franchise, especially in single-player, has yet to really out-evolve Combat Evolved. The Halo games stock very close to formula (it's a good formula but hey) and after 10 years of this the series really needs a change, i.e. the opposite of remaking the 1st one.

I know CE had issues but im not really sure how you improve on it as a Halo game whilst just not making a slightly tuned-up pixel for pixel copy and paste of it. The biggest problem with a Halo; CE Remake is that the original exists.

but.........they tried something like that before.......... and people laughed at it!

all I can ask is that they bring back invincible vehicles so we can launch the shit out of them with plasma grenades.

those were always hilarious games.

I'll believe it when I see it, either on the shelves or announced by 343 Industries. A rumour from an anonymous source means about as much to me as a Bat Boy sighting.

Frankly, though, I don't see the point. All the expense of redoing the imagery for the same ol' gameplay, when the original title is still playable on the same hardware as the remake. It just seems superfluous to me... and even with my die-hard Halo fan credentials I won't be buying a shinier version of a game I already have and love.

I'm gonna go ahead and say what everyone thinks LAME.

Co-op campaign = <3

One of the major reasons why I think 343 is trying for a remake is for multiplayer, which was sadly lacking on the console versions.

Now sure, you can pick up Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC and have multiplayer, and user created multiplayer maps (Custom Edition ftw), but I see this whole thing as enabling console users to play multiplayer in Halo:CE.

Look, I love Halo, or used to love it at least, but this is absolutely pointless. Remake a truly old game that deserves to be put in the spotlights once more. Halo is an incredibly succesful franchise, it doesn't need to be in the spotlights even more.

Nah, Bungie won't be making anymore Halo games, but that doesn't mean Microsoft won't make others make more Halo games.

Why remake this one?

I agree... People are still buying and playing this game, not to mention that there isn't a lot they can do story wise to make the game better. I mean, sure, they could a few levels.. But that's about it. Why go through all that trouble? I mean sure, some people would buy it. Maybe even enough to pay off the costs it'll take to remake and produce it. But no one will play it for very long. Unless, of course, they do a full overhaul of the multiplayer that trumps Reach's.. But if that were the case, wouldn't we already have more info then just a few rumors by now?

Part of the reason I think people still play this is A)Its a fairly decent game. B)Most people who I know still play this game are on the PC and requires little power in order to play allowing for older comps. to be able to play it. This is just a company that's trying to cash in on a franchise without wanting or being capable of coming up with new ideas of their own.

Yeah, I'm a fan boy and I'll just say that this is a day-one-purchase for me then (or would be if I had money).

Love the idea since it was the best one in the series (to me the covenant civil war ruined the story because suddenly we had powerful allies so the threat of being wiped out by aliens was greatly reduced). Besides, I lost my original copy of Halo CE for the xbox so it'd be nice to have a replacement.

"Hey Bill! We still have this thing lying around."
"What thing?"
"The Halo franchise."
"Really? I thought people stopped giving a damn about it."
"Nope; those idiots still play Halo 2, even after we unplugged it from the servers."
"Huh... Just remake the first game with prettier graphics. Then they'll get tired of it."
"But what if they want Halo 2 to be remade?"
"Heh. The day that'll happen is when Nintendo puts out a console that plugs into your brain and completely revolutionizes gaming."

And scene.

So after years of making the exact same game over and over they are just going to admit they have no creativity? Kudos, people should admit their limitations.

Yep. This isn't exactly a good thing. I'm sure fanboys and girls will scoop it up, afterall that is the only people they can target with this type of thing.

This is one of those times that I think gamers really need to make a stand and speak with their wallets.

I'll be getting it if this is true.

As big a halo fan as I am notwithstanding, I have to agree :(

I disagree with this however, there's certainly room to invite newcomers to the franchise, but remaking such a recent game still may be pushing it.

Sadly I'm sure it won't stop legions of people from buying it. Sigh

I hate to say it, but the original Halo is held on a pedestal by most people purely because of nostalgia. The subsequent games were far superior to the original.

I just don't see the point of this remake. Maybe if they change up the level design and balance, then it'll be on par with recent entries like Reach. But otherwise, this seems somewhat frivolous.

When the revolution starts, you have my bow.

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with the original Halo, and I don't think there's much they could do to make it better. I like every bit, Flood, Library, and all. Maybe if they keep everything the same, just make much better graphics and make the multiplayer online - but then you've got a prettier $60 version of a game that's been on PC for years. The online co-op? Yes. But I don't think that's worth $60.

In fact, for the most part I think fucking with classics is a bad idea. Why not take a game that had a really good idea, but didn't execute it very well, and remake it and fix all of the problems? Like possibly:

This should also be remade for the PC. I doubt it will be though...

And my Axe.

As I said in the other thread, I'm gonna buy it. I like halo, and I like playing halo online with friends.

I'm skeptical... I didn't like the artstyle change in Reach, and if it carries over...
