Detroit Mayor Refuses to Build RoboCop Statue

RoboCop won't be protecting the city of Detroit anytime soon.

When Detroit Mayor Dave Bing asked the internet for ideas on how the city could be revitalized, one very smart idea came in through Twitter. User MT suggested that Bing build a RoboCop statue in honor of the city's cyborg protector of the late 1980s. Sadly, the suggestion was denied.

"There are not any plans to erect a statue to RoboCop," Bing tweeted back. "Thank you for the suggestion."

The Twitterverse was then infused with angry RoboCop fans that didn't believe Bing gave the idea a fair chance. "If I were mayor of Detroit, my top priority would be a RoboCop statue," one said. Yeah, maybe that's why you're not the mayor of Detroit.

Bing has been trying to make the city safer through various programs such as one that aims to bring police officers back into the city from their homes in the suburbs. Apparently, he doesn't think that a statue from an 80s movie will contribute anything to this goal.

Of course, it wouldn't, but it would be really cool if Detroit had honored RoboCop like Philadelphia did for Rocky. If Bing were to put a real RoboCop on the streets, that'd be a different story.

I have to lend some respect to this mayor. He resisted the awesomeness of this idea, saving taxpayer money in the process. Once our economy has recovered, then we can erect a statue.

RoboCop's gonna have to die in hell if he wants to get back to Detroit.

Bing, I am disappoint.

It'll have to wait, Murphy. From what I hear Detroit needs a real Robocop.

Robocop statue? Why not, city's fucked anyway, might as well do something funny.

So erecting a Robocop statue that will cause thousands of police officer to make a yearly pilgrimage to Chicago to pay reverence to said statue of Robocop, wont bring more cops to the city? This guy must be insane to not see that logic!

Seriously Bing, you're missing out on a great tourist trap if nothing else.

Bing....you are a moron.

At least CONSIDER the guys idea......

This is why I hate living in Detroit... Ok, there are many reasons I hate living in Detroit, but this is just one more for the list.

I normally get quite annoyed with the personal commentary that gets provided with most Escapist news stories, but I have to admit, that made me laugh.

You. Robocop statue. Build. Now.
Although right now real Robocop would be helpful.
Damn, those movies were fun. Not explicitly well written, but just really really fun to watch.

I could be missing it, but I haven't seen a huge, committed fandom within the law enforcement community over RoboCop.

Nooooooo, I was so close to moving!

forget a statue If I was mayor I would build a robocop themepark

which would bring tourists and create needed jobs

I mean transavana has a Dracula themepark why cant Detroit have a robocop one?

Man I would love to see a Robocop statue built in Detroit.
I also think it would be a much cooler attraction then the retarded blue football shaped archway we have.

Come on Bing as a tax paying citizen of Michigan I want to see this happen.

EDIT: and why football shaped arches?
we have the Lion's and thats nothing to be proud of.

Aww cmon Tom, where's your sense of humour? :D I vote yes for the statue. Do eet faggot Bing.

Cool idea? Yes. Waste of tax dollars? Yes. Possible way of regaining those wasted tax dollars by way of tourism? Yes. I'd say the pros outweigh the cons.

Yeah, a Robocop statue is exactly the sort of thing Detroit should be spending its money on. Nevermind the countless abandoned buildings and shit. That money could go toward saving the beautiful Michigan Central Station from demolition.

He is obviously planning on building an ED-209 statue instead.

From what i read they can't even afford to keep the streetlights on, the city is selling scavenging rights for the abandoned buildings, and cops only patrol 20% of the city. A statue isn't going to save Detroit if this is true.

If they had asked Kilpatrick when he was still managing to be mayor here, MAAAAAYBE it would of happened...

Bing looks too old to have been into the Robocop movies.

I can't argue against your sound reason but that doesn't mean I'm any less disappointed. :)

They may have had a RoboCop statue, but it would still be Detroit after all.

Agreed, but the statue MUST be made. Nothing would make me want to visit Detroit more than to go see a 15 foot tall statue of Officer Alex Murphy, from the future of 1987.

Really Detroit? Even my hometown understands the importance of cultural icons. That's why we have this.

What do you have against Robocop? He's the coolest robot ever. He beat the Terminator for goodness sakes!

Pfft. Forget Robo-derp.

Spawn is where its at! Hes Michigans real hero!
Hes everything michigan is! Homeless, angry, lusting over his wife who thinks hes dead.

And above all, ugly! Just like the roads! Anyone whos been to michigan knows what im talking about. Roll through detriot and i swear, you will see potholes you can fit a station wagon in.

What about a statue of KISS? Come one Detroit, you used to be Rock City.

WHEN WAS THIS?!

I must have details.

I think a RoboCop statue would help the safety of Detroit infinitely more than no statue ...
