Australia's Game Rating Overhaul Delayed Again

image

Australia's march to an R18+ videogame rating has run into yet another delay thanks to state elections in New South Wales which have made it impossible for a vote on the issue to take place.

I don't believe in fate, but sometimes I wonder. Like, for instance, when I look at Australia's struggle to bring in an R18+ rating for videogames. It just makes sense, right? And yet at this point I'm beginning to wonder if even an act of God would be enough to make it happen.

It looked like progress might be made at the last meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General [SCAG], held in December 2010, but in spite of overwhelming public support for a mature videogame rating the AGs voted not to create the rating, but to begin drafting the preliminary guidelines under which it could be created. In other words, they dodged.

The deadline was set for the next SCAG meeting on March 4, at which time the wheels of progress would presumably turn a little further. But once again the process has been delayed, this time due to state elections in New South Wales which will keep Attorney General John Hatzistergos from attending. Any changes to Australia's game rating system requires unanimous assent from all AGs and Hatzistergos' absence means that won't be possible.

Even if he did attend, it wouldn't matter; because of the election, the New South Wales government will be in a "caretaker period," which the NSW Premier's office said means that "no significant new decisions or initiatives, appointments, or contractual undertakings" should be made.

So tough noogies, Australia, but keep your chin up. Someday, your time will come.

yes.

those elections that always happen at the exact same time always catches people off guard.

I dont know why, but I seriously think 2011 will be the year that Australia finally gets an 18+ rating, but it probably wont be until later in the year.

For the love of god Australia just get it over with already.

For the love of god, give them the R-18 rating so this type of news can be done with. Who idea was it to make it unanimous. Just imagine the level of stupidity the world would have to go through if all decisions where made with that rule.

I just know we're going to get either a dumbed down version of Duke Nukem Forever or it wont be allowed because its def' going to be rated R 18+.

Stupid NSW...

Maybe it would just be quicker to start an initiative to setup a metric shit-ton of outboard motors along the western seaboard and sail Australia to a more sensible part of the world. Kangaroos in California anyone? I can see it.

This is ridiculous.

I'm not even Australian or anything, but i feel kinda sad these mustache-growing kangaroo-boxing men (not that Polish politicians are better, but at least they are stuck in 20th century, so it'll take them some time to realize that games exist).

SCAG? They named their law making committee after heroin? Awesome.

Why would it require unanimous support from the attorney generals? Wouldn't that make it almost impossible to pass any new laws? Unless there's only 3 of them and 2 can bully the third into agreeing. Hooray for my ignorance!

It's all Michael Atkinson's fault, obviously. The man is a freaking sorceror, I tell ya. Even out of office, he can still delay the rise of his arch-nemesis: The R-18 rating!

no, it is stupid to make it a unanimous decision, I believe it was donne on purpose so that it would have very little chance to pass.

Okay guys, I think we all know what time it is.

Elections be damned, if I have to be at school every morning by 8am regardless of an ongoing case of the flu then those old bastards in Australia's AG board can't skip cause of some election they knew damn well about months in advance.

Hatzistergos won't be there at the next meeting, the New South Wales Liberal Party could appear on prime time television all collectively fucking farmyard animals and they would still win this election. So, how does Greg Smith feel about an R rating for games? That is the question we have to ask now. Him being a born-again Christian doesn't bode well. We may yet not see any sense from SCAG.

OK, I don't take politicians in high regard, but I can't believe they happened to schedule a meeting for a time when one of the FIVE people who had to be there couldn't show. Did this state election come out of nowhere? Was a general attorney killed or something?

Hmmm... this reminds me, does anyone remember the Supreme court of the U.S.A. Case of California Vs. the Videogame industry? what's going on with that right now? are we winning? losing? has it been delayed or did I just completely miss the news that the trial is over?

No r18 vijima games there :(

Australia has for the longest time been the Christian of the gaming countries, and still will be, from the looks of it.

Duke Nukem Forever is MA15+, but Left 4 Dead 2 is heavily censored? Well this is just proof that something is definitely wrong in my country. I think it's time to leave.

Yeah this made no sense to me at all, apparently Bulletstorm got through with no edits or cuts as well. Not sure though.

Now all we have to do is vote on what a Just and Secure Society actually stands for. I foolishly thought it meant freedom of choice for the individual.

I'm a little confused.

Did New South Wales just say that because they're having an election, the whole of Australia has to grind to a halt, and avoid making any 'significant decisions'? Seems kind of arrogant to me.

Whatever, I'm numb to the pain by now.

I hope everyone knows that the who reason why this issue exists in Australia is because stupid parents buy games blindly for their idiot kids without looking into the content before buying, they see the game when their child is playing and then start bitching about it, look at Black Opps, how many people have complained about it saw it only when their kids was playing it.

But anyway, with the politics, even after the NSW election, the overhaul still has to be approved by every state, including Queensland, a state that now probably has every video game, console and computer destroyed from water damage (or has a roof though it).

and even after that, doesn't it have to go though government, and knowing one of the independents, we'll be waiting a few months for him to finish bloody talking on the issue (not going to name who).

Ziadaine:

i've seen the trailers, it's about the same and Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes yet more graphical, infact, any tits in it can't be any reason for dumbbing down or banning the game because there was just as much in Playboy The Mansion and they let that in, not to mention they let in girls bouncing up and down with only panties on your lap in that game, and as for violence, there's nothing you can point out that isn't in or not as bad as what was done in Gears of War 2 or Condemned

Undead Dragon King:
It's all Michael Atkinson's fault, obviously. The man is a freaking sorceror, I tell ya. Even out of office, he can still delay the rise of his arch-nemesis: The R-18 rating!

best way to fix that, stick him on an island with a working game system (PS3, 360, PC, what every) and tell him he can only eat if he plays games and he can only leave when he becomes a gamer, that or we can kill him and teabag his corpse but that probably wouldn't help us but help prove that games promote violence and teabagging of corpses

It'll happen eventually. Just not in our lifetime.

The thing about elections in Australia is they don't exactly have a fixed date. There's a date that they need to be held by, but a government either state or Federal can call it early, which means for most people we've only got an idea of what year it'll be held in rather then the month in that year.

It's a real pain in the arse that the NSW election is being held during the same that the State Attorney-Generals are supposed to be meeting, but the Attorney-General for NSW really can't attend as he is a member of current NSW goverment. That is to say if the current party acting as government loses said election the current Attorney-General will no longer be the state's Attorney-General as the new government will install their own from their own party.

And Dead Space 2 made it as well. But heaven forfend you wanted to play Mark Ecko's Getting Up (an old example, I know).

The guys keeping Australians from playing certain games are called SCAG? Seriously? That's amusing.

If they don't let us have an R18+ rating, or threaten to tone down the Aussie release of Duke Nukem Forever, heads will roll.

If that's the case, I call dibs on releasing the blade.

Dude, fucking seriously? Apparently Australian politicians really hate games.

Am I the only one who's amused by the name Hatzistergos?

I hate our governments... bloody New South Welshmen (I'm a West Aussie).

Sigh, this is getting really annoying.

Thats ok, we will just pirate all the refused classification games until the game companies buy our politicans too.
