Chinese Dude Plays for Three Days, Dies

image

A man spent three days in a Chinese internet cafe and did not survive the encounter.

We all love to play games, but we know that playing them at the exclusion of basic human functions like sleep and food will kill us. Apparently, one Chinese man didn't realize that fact. A 30-year-old guy checked into an internet cafe in the suburbs of Beijing one day and decided to play as long and hard as he possibly could. He allegedly spent 72 hours straight sitting at a computer until he finally passed out, and even though the cafe owners called an ambulance to rush him to the hospital, no amount of slapping the face or smelling salts could resurrect him. According to the cafe, he had spent almost $1,500 on gaming in the last month of his life. The game that the man was playing was not reported, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that it had War and/or Craft in the title.

These kinds of stories from Asian nations are not new. For example, last year, a Korean couple was indicted for ignoring their 3 month old child as they cared for their virtual daughter in the game PRIUS. The Vietnam government recently placed a curfew on online gaming in order to prevent its population from becoming addicted.

All of these stories seem to be linked to the social problems of gaming in these nations, but I don't know that games are the root cause. Sure, MMOs use mechanics that can can be addictive, but perhaps the economic conditions and lack of civil liberties make these poor souls more susceptible to poor choices when it comes to gaming. If your life is decidedly more enjoyable when you are in a virtual world, why would you ever log off?

I put money on the fact it was Hello Kitty Island.

Or maybe we was really really into Eve?

EDIT: World of Warcraft doesn't kill people. East Asian Gaming Cafes do.

And now media will use this to demonise games as always.

when i'm in a marathon gaming session, at least i remember to eat, sleep, use the bathroom...
you know, the sort of thing that prevents death...

i just don't get how someone can do this to themselves without noticing it happening.

Maybe like a bartender an internet cafe staff member should know to cut a customer off when they've had too much. Maybe a little bit before 72 hours.

I don't get it, I play a lot of games and I play them for a long time, I still notice when I'm hungry! I go get a snack and I continue playing, it's not hard.

East Asian MMOs are freakin' scary, man. They're even more blatant about trying to encourage addictive behavior and leech your wallet.

..you would think that they would kick the guy out before he oh you DIED

It think you may have a good insight there. They lack true control and freedom in their lives with the exception of their virtual lives. This hypothesis works for totalitarian places like China and Vietnam, but fails to explain such behavior in places like Korea and Japan.

In Asia, game kills you!

jk, but wow...thats ridiculous. how can you possibly do that to yourself??? damn asian countries..get a hold of yourself!

Looks like...

What can I say? There are people who die because of addictions all the time. Video games are no different.

Playing for 72 hours straight isn't that bad, been there done that a couple times. Kind of odd that he simply passed out, I'd be interested in seeing the coroner report on that one. Cause I'm betting it wasn't just the sleep deprevation.

Looks like Natural Selection has played its part again.

Okay, so you mean to tell me there are no rules to limit how long you can stay in a particular Café? Maybe kick him out after 12 hours -_-

I put my money on that he died of thirst because you dont die from sleep depravation untill 8 to 10 days and from starving until around 6 days.

He was in a cafe! Couldn't they have given him complementary glasses of water!?

Yeah, speacially if he had spent over 1,500 there in the last month. But i think he didn't want to have to leave the game to to pee.

What's that thing called? Darwinism, good riddance. How did volume 2 of Stephen King's The Stand put it? Not much of a waste of life?

I think it has something to do with the consumption vs. time. Most of us on here have gamed over a period of years. I started off way back in the mists with the Amiga 500 twenty years ago and have moved incrementally from generation to generation. How many of these people went straight from toiling and boredom to MMOs and electronic media? I'm thinking they have an electronic entertainment version of The Bends (It's not a perfect analogy but I think it's close enough).

And the cafe workers did nothing for those 3 days?

They didn't kick him out? Tell him to sleep & eat? Anything?

Good idea but I doubt it, or else we would see this all over the world with young kids that have gotten their first taste of MMOs/videogames going nuts.

But you could be right, maybe in the future we'll have an epidemic of game addictions once these kids aren't kids anymore.

true, but it also depends on what you're doing. if no strenuous activity is done, then yes sleep deprivation takes about a week, but if he was gaming HARD, for 72 consecutive hours, then i definitely thinks it helps

What I find most amusing about this article is that the Vietnamese government believes that it is justifiable for it to spend time on gaming addiction instead of, well, everything else.

Trololol.

no amount of slapping the face or smelling salts could resurrect him.

I laughed

I laughed even harder

I'd like to know how it's possible to starve / thirst / stay conscious enough to the point of death, especially in a public place like an internet cafe. Surely somebody would have recognised the man was looking none too healthy by day 2, and i didn't think places like that literally stayed open 24 hours around the clock the point where someone could theoretically sit in the same spot for 72 hours without ever having to move or be thrown out by the management to close for the night. Not only that, but you have to have ridiculous constitution to be able to sit there in presumable pain. I know you're absorbed into your game world, but i simply can't accept it would draw you in to the point of ignoring pain, or failure to notice you might be blacking out from loss of sleep / thirst / hunger. Things like these makes me question whether the story is actually credible, or if there's simply more to it than 'Asian man dies from video game marathon'.

lol that is so awful...but so awesome at the same time

I concur, with both points

altho the last one I'm not so sure about...I think we should focus our research on the impact of violent video games on the increasing rape percentages first

Asians are supposed to better than us at video games. But is it really worth the cost?

Well, it's a shame when anyone's death is connected to video games (on top of the shame of someone dying early in the first place), but it was either this, or having him rehabilitate. Sounds like he had a pretty dangerous addiction.

Video-Games cause death's. Ok we went from : Kids pissing them-self because they just beat the fire-man stage. To : People starving to death.

"..." Huuh. Kinda a big change, don't ya think?

Seriously, he sould be nominated for a Darwin award.

Could have been from lack of water, but another thing that could have killed him is if he didn't use the restroom at all, then he could have died from a type of toxic shock from the waste building up in his body.

Exactly, I have gone through a few days straight playing games [I had to hit level 180 in AO, I NEEDED TO] and the most I got out of it was a major crash due to energy drinks and snacks.

its sad that someone died playing a game, especially in an internet cafe. I would think owners would realize that if their customers keep dying, they will run out of customers.

Which brings another point.........

Why dont the internet cafe's close for a few hours each night, atleast forcing the people outside for three or four hours?

That's what the cafe told the press at least after the man had ordered their 'surprise' special.

If I was in China, I would want to find an awesome way to kill myself too. This isn't run over by a tank awesome, but it's not the worse I've ever seen.

We lost a moron.

Having said that, whose more stupid? The person who kills when playing video games by ignoring basic human needs like food and sleep, or the people who own the cafe and just let him do it?

Conspiracy theory time: no sensible person would do such a thing, he was either mentally ill, or was killed bu the corrupt regime who seeks justification to impose control under the guise of care for their citizens. Why doesn't this stuff happen in the west?
