GameStop Lists Catherine for July US Release

Could Atlus' anticipated "adult horror" game be heading to Western shores after all?

Few games have garnered so much interest purely on concept like Catherine has. Atlus' Persona team had previously shown its ability to tackle mature concepts such as sexuality and gender identity in Persona 4, after all, and here was a game that revolved around all of that stuff - can you blame us for being excited? Alas, last week we learned it was not to be: Atlus had "no plans" to bring the game out of Japan. Oh well, better luck next time, right?

But wait, hold on a second.

Shortly after the "Catherine isn't coming to the West" story broke, Atlus sent out an email to its fans and media outlets containing a single mysterious image with the words "Do you still like us?" against a hot pink background. Said background was more than a little reminiscent of Catherine's box art, leading many to hypothesize that the game would indeed be heading across the Pacific.

The plot thickened further when sharp-eyed internet hawks caught a listing for the game on GameStop's website, with a North American release date of July 26th. Said listing has since been removed, but as we all know the internet has a long memory (and long cache times).

It's hardly a definitive confirmation, to be sure. But it is some pretty substantial evidence hinting at a Catherine localization, even if we won't know for sure until Atlus confirms (or denies) its plans. VG247 claims that the localization will be announced tomorrow, so we might not have long to wait either way.

...So if it comes to the US will it maybe even come to Europe? A tenuous link but I'll hold on to it.

I totally called this, by the way:

Scabadus:
I can't help but feel a little suspicious that Atlus are just saying this so that people want the game (since they can't have it) then when it's finally released here it's guarenteed to sell well. That's what I'm hoping for, at least.

OH GOD! PLEASE LET IT BE RELEASED TO EU TO!

OT: Please let it be released in EU too.

Hmmm... I call bullshit because if it isn't localized its not coming here period.

Please let this be true. My god, let this be true.

*Reads the image* I don't even know you!

OT: It would be very nice if they were release it out of Japan. I've been hearing many good things about it and I'd like to try it out.

This better not be fake, or my hopes will be crushed twice.

RedEyesBlackGamer:

My extraordinaire detective skills tell me you really want catherine...I did not look at your title >.>

OT: Please..do release it in Europe...that is all

Well, guess I don't have to learn japanese after all. Whew.
Keep us posted!

Fuck... year.

If the box art is kept, PS3 version for me. :P

Oh Atlus, I'll always like you

OT: yes please

I FUCKING WANT THIS GAME!!!!

Who cares? Seriously.

I thought we as a community were over the "OMG IT HAS SEX IN IT, FOLLOW ITS EVERY MOVE!" phase of gaming media. Guess I was wrong.

Would it be better if I told you it was the next game from my favorite dev team that is a pseudo-sequel the the Persona series? Research a game before making accusations and generalizations.

YES! this is awesome. I cant wait for it to come out.

Its not just the sex. Really its not even the sex, (at least for me). For me its the fact its Atlus, who are the people that do Demon Souls, Persona, and other such gems of SMT. They're games are amazing, and usually a trip to places you may not want to go. They're also rather good story tellers. This just looks like an awesome game,a nd the sex looks like that tasteful kinda where its part of the character in her act.

I think the key bit in that article was.

Said listing has since been removed

After the backlash they received, it'd only make sense for them to do a 180 and release it here. No reason not to when you have a willing ton of people wanting to buy it.

Atlus has made some absolutely brilliant games. I'm hoping this is going to be more than just fanservice cheesecake with a dark undertone, but even if it is, I'll still play it. They do so much to create weird and unique games I feel like I NEED to support them.

Maybe now they'll release that dam trailer in English.

Except the point is that Catherine looks to not just be a "tee hee, T&A" game, but a game that is aiming to tackle mature topics like sexuality, infidelity and gender identity in a serious manner - things that Atlus' Persona team has already demonstrated that it can do.

It isn't that it has sex in it, it's that it treats the topic of sex seriously. That's the difference, and we're excited about it because precious few games do exactly that.

After taking a look at a couple gameplay videos where you climb a tower by moving blocks, I gotta ask how this links to the "dealing with sexuality" thing? To my inexperienced eye, this looks like a gory block-jumping mini-game with scary stuff where the overall scary entity is derived from a female. Maybe the story that is loosely linked by this mini-game deals with the sexuality angle?

Mr. Funk, you seem pretty in touch with Japanese culture, maybe you can explain if the concept you touched on in the article ("herbivore man"?) is something that Western audiences will be able to comprehend without the Coles Notes. Maybe I am just not getting how this game is a horror game about sex.

Yes, that's correct - it's the story between the block-climbing sections that has to do with sex/relationships, not the actual gameplay scenarios (there, as far as I've been able to tell, it's a bit more like a visual novel/choose your own adventure).

Will the exact concept of a "herbivore man" be accessible to Western audiences? I'm not sure. But given that a lot of guys in the West are so very concerned with images and appearances of masculinity, a game that touches on that might still be poignant.

Well... this is a spot of good news. I had no hopes of it ever seeing western shores full stop when the Escapist first mentioned Catherine in the news, but this has lifted my spirits considerably.

I'm hopeful the game comes to western shores. Even if there is no EU release, i will still import it for my PS3 and hope it's region free, since several of my games are Canadian and work just fine on my PAL PS3. Fingers crossed!

I hope fans and media outlets replied: "NO!!"

Sounds good. I just never really got the Catherine buzz. I feel that if anyone but Atlus developed it nobody would care. I'd rather have persona 5. But I am happy for its fans, of which there are many around these parts.

No,some of us (like me) want to play the game for story, and or gameplay (Which is pretty good judging from the demo) But the reason this is worth noting is because it was made by the Persona team,is thier first HD release, and is evidently confusing as all hell

To be perfectly honest...I think they're just teasing us. No pun intended.

That said, no. No, I don't think they'll release it here.

Oh Atlus, I've always liked you.

And this smells like fishy fishes. I'd imagine that there would be a catch of some kind...

Even better, that's just after my 17th birthday, so I can get it without needing my dad to buy it with me and give me a dirty look when he sees the boxart!

Captcha: cucumber ivedin. These things are fun, I don't see why people dislike them :D

I'll be buying one of each version at least. MUST INSPIRE DEVELOPERS TO INNOVATE.

They already have, though. Everyone on the Atlus mailing list got a mail this morning announcing its release in North America. =)

cool, that's my birthday

If you guys didn't catch this check out this website

Kind of a jerk move Atlus, but whatever.

So long as we get it I don't really care
