InFamous 2 Adds Flexible User-Generated Mission Builder

InFamous 2 Adds Flexible User-Generated Mission Builder

Players of InFamous 2 will be able to create their own missions and share them with the world.

PlayStation 3 games like LittleBigPlanet and ModNation Racers have become known for their user-generated content modes, but would you ever have expected a similar mode to come to a game like InFamous 2? Neither did I, but it has, with Sucker Punch recently taking the lid off of InFamous 2's user-created missions that it says give the game "infinite possibilities."

The original InFamous launched with 99 missions. Once they were finished, the story was over. The idea behind the mission builder in InFamous 2 is to make sure that doesn't happen.

Sucker Punch says that creators will have access to the same "characters, creatures and props" as the development team, and that there "aren't a lot of limits" to the missions you can build. You can create stealth missions, mini-games that involve tossing cars, obstacle courses, and more, along with more typical missions like escort, search and destroy, and survival.

The mission builder trailer shows the player placing different types of enemies and objects around the game world. Once a mission is completed, it can be uploaded to the PlayStation Network so people can try it out. These will apparently show up just like regular missions, with the best-rated creations showing up in more players' worlds. This sounds a little off-putting if all you want to do is play through the official story, but I'm sure there'll be a way to filter out user-created missions if you don't want them in your game.

Sucker Punch is holding a limited public beta test of the InFamous 2 mission builder in early April, with details to be announced on March 14. Everybody will be able to create their own missions when InFamous 2 is released for the PlayStation 3 on June 7, 2011.

This is awesome. I honestly can't wait to go insane with this.

Damnit! Stop giving me reasons to buy this game!

One of my favorite things to do for game is to design missions for it, then have a friend try to beat it. It started for me with Tenchu 2, and will continue to InFamous 2.

Honestly, I love this user-created content trend on the PS3. 1 more reason to get the game (not that I needed anymore)

Really the only downside to this system is that the developers might decide to let the user generated content carry the game and make their own content relatively weak. I'm sure Sucker Punch hasn't done that, but it's certainly a possibility.

Honestly, Sucker Punch, you had me at "We're making another InFamous"

I'm sure Sucker Punch will keep the user-generated missions seperate from the actual story-driven missions via an icon or something, which will transport you to a specialized open world where you can create and access them. Atleast that's how I would do it.

I do kind of like the sound of this though. Most open-world games allow you to continue playing after you've finished the story, but there really isn't much to do afterward anyway. Being able to create your own missions after you're done with the story seems pretty cool in that regard.

Amazing. I'm glad to see more console games coming out like this. It's one of the strongest points to PC gaming IMHO. The only downside being the necessity of a company created kit. Which is fine. Star Craft makes it's own map kit, while others like Minecraft are pretty open source.

This just makes me want the game more. I was already fully invested into the story. Being an extreme lover of comics, I also highly appreciated the cut scenes in Infamous. I can't wait to see what people come up with.

If I had reason not to get this game before, it's long gone. Honestly can't wait now!

lol who's going to make escort missions? I thought it was the general consensus that escort missions are always the worst missions in games.

Either way, this looks awesome. I seriously never would have expected player-created missions in a game like inFamous, but it looks pretty good.

I am very sceptical of this and I put money on the missions will be either really really dull, the majority of the community will create only a few missions that are very shallow or ones that are just there to kill a lot people in one way.

Could be amazing but I'm betting it's not

Ahh, Sucker Punch. You continue..Well, making great games! Sly and infamous are both awesome.. And now with a mission creator it will be even more awesome! Always want something like that in. Well, in all games I have, from GTA, to Sly, to..

Well, to Infamous! Yaay!

I cannot wait to see what people create with this!

Nice to see the consoles are getting this sort of stuff.

probably won't be too great of an editor
but hey its more content

Now that's what i call an infinite game !

Escorts are not always bad it's when you don't pay them for...(whispers in ear)OH! Escort Missions!

Well they are not always bad either it's when they can't be touched, die in five seconds, have terrible A.I. (running into enemies or using your items poorly) and/or bad terrain navigation. I mean Alyx of Half-Life 2 is pretty much An Escort just that she can't accually be killed.

Looks really gimmicky.

Just because you can take a number of different kinds of missions and copy paste them over and over again does not mean you have unlimited missions, it just means you have unlimited variations of the same missions.

Not exactly the same.

Sure, some people might end up creating good missions, but most will be crap. Just like most LBP levels are crap with only some being good.

Yea, I enjoyed the first but just planned on renting the sequel. This might push it into buy territory.

It makes sense, this generation of console gamers have had to deal with all the annoyances of having their platform online, they might as well get some of the benefits too: like mods.

Hopefully if the trend continues, the next Fallout will have a geck for the console versions. At least that way the users can patch it up so it isn't completely broken.

wow, this is REALLY innovative :D good job guys!
thanks for moving games forward, and so help me if anyone draws a comparison between InFamous 2 and Prototype 2 there's going to be hell to pay...

are you looking Electronic Arts? THIS is how you beat piracy!.

This. All they've been doing since then is turning "I want inFamous 2" into "I need inFamous 2".
I would've played the first inFamous forever if there was more to do. It looks like I'm getting my wish. And if no one makes any good levels, then I can simply do my best to create my very own Horde mode.

Intriguing, but not the most anticipated feature. Should add some additional playtime, if nothing else.

Well, can't say I was expecting that.

It'll be interesting to see what comes out of it. What intimidates me about LittleBigPlanet is that they just have one HUGE open canvas and they tell you to go nuts, and to paraphrase Yahztee "When you tell me I can do everything, I just can't think of anything" (Scribblenauts review). I would never know where to start with a level.

Here, though, while it's obviously more limited, it's also a bit more focused in what it can deliver (at least that's what it looks like). Should be interesting to try it out.

OH GOD NOT THE ESCORT MISSIONS!!!

besides that I'm really happy to see them trying let & I'm excited to know how it turns out... but not preorder excited; reading about it on the escapist excited

As if this game wasn't fucking awesome enough already, this is the closest a game can come to orgasmic with out sex being involved.
