EA Brings PS3 Crysis 2 Demo to Abrupt End

EA killed the demo so it could get the actual launch right.

EA has announced that it is shutting down the PS3 multiplayer demo of Crysis 2 in order to iron out the bugs before the game's release next week. Players were noticing delays when trying to connect to servers, which made actually playing the multiplayer-only demo rather tricky.

EA said that its priority was on making sure that Crysis 2 had a "flawless" launch. EA said that it had identified the root cause of the issues, but with just days to go before the release of the game itself, it decided that the best use of resources would be to kill the demo and make sure that the same thing didn't happen post-release. The PS3 was the last platform to get the Crysis 2 demo, which went live on March 15th. It came two weeks later than the PC version, and more than a month behind the Xbox 360 version.

EA was vague about exactly when the demo was going down, saying that it would be in the "next 24" hours, but not giving a specific time. PS3 players are understandably upset by this turn of events, with some going as far as to say that this decision has actually soured them against buying the game. What must be especially frustrating is that had PS3 players not been left waiting until the very last minute, then this issue might have been caught and fixed sooner, allowing them to get the same experience that players on other platforms had.

Crysis 2 comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on March 22nd.

this really really pissed me off, i only got to play 2 and a half games in the end and i'd been looking forward to this demo since i caught a glimpse of the pc version the other day.

Dear Crytek, i will not be able to afford the full version of your game when it gets released, so thanks for this

Translation: the game is about to be launched and we want people to buy it instead of playing the demo.

When atlas closed the catherine demo wasn't it in part cause sony charges the developers to have demos up? Honestly demos are the kinds of things I'd like archived so someone can find the demo after the release.

I know it would help me know if i wanted to shell out the money for the game. Especially when it comes to new vs used. Sometimes I've ended up buying games i would have bought new used because i didn't want to risk as much on a game i was unsure about.

But maybe thats just me.

They fucked it up, haven't they.

Well Crytek, so much for service and a demo. The XBOX360 demo wasn't that much better as well, matchmaking outright sucked.

damn it all! I JUST downloaded that, never got the chance to play it, still shooters were never my favorite thing about gaming, so I'm not that disappointed

you guys aint missing much ...
it was call of duty with suit powers ....

and lots and lots of random crashing for no reason.

What? You don't think 4 days (minus shipping) is enough to fix all the glaring flaws that the player found in the game? Or maybe they just had to go back and make the guns louder or something :)

Well...this hardly seems to be leading up to a "flawless" launch. I can't imagine that move has done more good than bad for them. Publicity-wise, of course, which is going to be a factor if "flawless" is their goal.

so they've (from what ive read and experienced) released a xbox 360 demo in poor condition with terrible connection and lag problems, pissed off the pc community (of which im part of) with a low console ported version of the game (of which no response from crytek) and then they pull the plug on the ps3 version early with problems in the demo causing outcry from ps3 owners... good job ^_^

couldn't help but lol

That is completely stupid. Demo's are the games primary means of being tested by it's user base. Here is another tip, because a game is out, leave the demo up still. This is how it has been done on the PC forever. I can download the demo of a game that came out two years ago and play it. This is where console developers/publishers fail, they lack the ability to see what an aspect of a product is actually for.

Meh, the game is over priced anyway, I am not gonna be buying it for the lame multiplayer. When it goes on a Steam super sale, I'll pick it up. Though, I know that EA also doesn't care about sales after the first six months, so..... maybe I won't buy it at all. I don't think I'll be missing much.

Yeah, they managed to alienate the entire gaming community in one fell swoop! That has to take some skill (or maybe lack there-of).

Rule 16: If you fail in epic proportions, it may just become a winning failure.

well, better told than said. They are no going to do anything. We must say NO!!!

Whew, now I don't feel bad about having never intended to but it. Thanks, EA!

Crytek did fail in epic proportions, but in this case it does not become a win. Merely a gelatinous failure.

I remember this demo, played 5 or 6 games, and they were all super lagtastic. Like I'd shoot a guy and he wouldn't die until seconds afterwards. Hope they'll be fixing that up.

demo reaffirmed everything i had thought the game would be. generic.

Good luck on your sales Crytek.

They were always like us, just a little different but this completes the corruption.

Yeah, normally Uwe Boll is the only one capable of doing that.

I honestly don't think Crysis 2 Demo was so bad, I never encountered errors with it on the Xbox 360. Well, besides the first time the demo hit the 360, then it crashed all the time.

You mean they still haven't fixed all the crashes from the 360 version?

I expect many bugs in the actual release then (not that i'm buying it of course)

I don't care as long as they fix the absolutely HORRENDOUS host-picking. Never have I seen so many red and yellow bars in a game lobby.

Agreed. Whilst reading

...allowing them to get the same experience that players on other platforms had.

I was thinking "So PS3 players wanted to get the same buggy and crappy experience as us XBOX360 players? How nice that they wanted to experience the same aggrevations (annoyances) as us." I seriously hope they fix/ed all the bugs before release otherwise I'm probably going to hold out on it until it becomes cheaper. I also am unhappy at Crytek for not including the... I think it was 'instant action'? gamemode from Crysis. I did find that to be very enjoyable.

There is absolutely no conceivable way in which the demo being up and running could slow them down in fixing this issue, not this close to the actual launch of the game. Either it won't be fixed and they don't want people to notice before its too late and have already bought the game or if by any chance the demo is really too much for their network infrastructure to handle then this game will bomb.

And as a QA tester i can't understand how did this game ever got the go ahead from either sony or microsoft to ever launch in the first place given all the problems they are having with the demos. Unless their demos are based on a seriously outdated version.

Sounds to me like ea is half expecting crysis 2 to bomb on the consoles and pulled the demo in order to try and get more people to buy the game on launch before word gets around the game isn't up to much. But there I go with my wild imagination : D

I wish EA would understand that demos and first sold version of games should not be betatests.

I tried playing the demo 5 times but was never able to actually get into a match. This is what you get when you wait to the last minute Crytek. I think I'll wait a while and get this one used now.

I was kinda bummed out to see they never released a single-player demo. I MUCH would of rather of had that than the multiplayer that I downloaded and didn't even bother to play more than once

I don't know about anyone else but I'm getting a kind of masochistic pleasure in all this. Crytek has been making some very bold claims about how this game was going to max-out each system and set new benchmarks and instead it's lit the internetz ablaze with hostility.

I think we're looking at the next great epic fail.

Played the 360 demo, had terrible connection issues.

Was going to play the PS3 version but now can't.

Do I care about this game enough to buy it? No. Nowadays, I tend to only buy games new if I have played the sequel, the last new game at full price I bought before Pokemon Black being Halo Reach. Everything else I have bought as been pre-owned. The only exception of this is when I play a demo which gets me interested in the game, Just Cause 2 being the last game I can think of.

I know a lot people say demos are pointless but at the end of the day I am not buying this game simply because nothing about it has appealed to me enough yet, a demo may have been enough to make me buy it.

What a failure of a developer. Crysis 2 is like COD with powers, now they take down the PS3 demo 2 days after it starts? I doubt I'll ever buy their products again, and from the response most people had to the Crysis 2 demo, not many others will either.

Unforseen consequences people. Be fair.

Hahaha. Nah, not buying this shit. Good programming they day, as good as PS3 exclusive they say. Truth is, it looks like PS3 game from 2007.

I downloaded it, just finished yesterday, the demo didn't "work" (as in this)... okay... never played the original, have yet to play this one, so I'm passing up on what looks like a fun game.... or is it... I don't know.
