Resident Evil: Raccoon City Trailer Shows SOCOM Influence

Resident Evil: Raccoon City Trailer Shows SOCOM Influence

In its first trailer, Resident Evil: Raccoon City looks something like SOCOM with added zombie head stomping.

Capcom officially confirmed SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals: Confrontation developer Slant Six's Resident Evil: Raccoon City after details leaked out earlier this week. Along with this confirmation comes Raccoon City's first trailer, a decent look at the title despite a headache-inducing presentation of gameplay scenes inserted between logo flashes.

Resident Evil: Raccoon City is a team-based shooter where players battle through events occurring during Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 solo or in up to 4-player co-op. Unlike previous Resident Evil titles, players take on the role of an Umbrella Security Services soldier, i.e. one of the "bad guys," looking to eliminate all evidence of the T-virus outbreak including all survivors and other forces in the area such as Resident Evil 4's Leon S. Kennedy. Capcom says it'll allow fans to "rewrite the history" of the Raccoon City outbreak.

In addition, Raccoon City will feature various online multiplayer modes with three different sides: the previously mentioned Umbrella Security Services, the United States Special Ops, and a team of zombies/bio-organic weapons (B.O.W's). As far as I can tell, the trailer mostly shows off the single player/co-op mode.

Raccoon City's environments look dark and grungy. There's definitely a SOCOM-ish feeling to some of the gameplay moments, which could be interesting in a Resident Evil title. Excluding Resident Evil 5, players are normally forced to go it alone in the series, and when the ammo and herbs run out you can pretty much get screwed without adequate knife skills. Now we could potentially play with up to 3 other rifle-wielding, herb-carrying friends, which is a nice change.

Resident Evil: Raccoon City hasn't been dated, but it'll be released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Looks interesting, liked Confrontation, so I might like this.

They would stamp "Resident Evil" on anything

I don't mind them trying out a new gameplay style in the Resident Evil universe. This trailer isn't nearly enough to judge the actual gameplay, but I'm OK with the idea.

I do mind them messing with the cannon, witch is what it looks like this game is doing.

I'm OK with them setting the game in Raccoon City. It's big enough to host another story without any conflicts, but as soon as they start bringing in characters whose whereabouts where completely accounted for during their entire time in Raccoon City, I start having problems with it, especially when it's obviously just for fanservice (I'm looking at you Jill Valentine in Resident Evil: Apocalypse).

I'm honestly excited about this. Can't wait to try it out.

Finally! A "Resident evil" game I might actually play.

Yes:

New game play mechanics, four player co-op, a fresh cast of player characters, more raccoon city. Also, zombies.

No:

Messing with the god-damn cannon, throwing in old characters for the sake of attention and generally mangling even further the Octopus giblets that are the remains of whatever story Resident Evil had in the first place.

to be honest, if they had just decided on a current gen version of Outbreak, I would of been okay with it. but adding in SOCOM gameplay just seems like icing on the cake.

I agree though, we few who played through RE 1 - 3 would be able to tell the differences in cannon, easist of them all is Leon arrived in Raccoon City in a Jeep and met Claire shortly afterwords, and throughout the entirety of Resident Evil 2 you never drove a police truck, sure you pushed one, but never drove it.

but honestly........... if this means that I can finally say that RE 4 and 5 are non-cannon then RELEASE THIS GAME YESTERDAY CAPCOM! I cant wait to see the online portions other than co-op [which is always great for a Resident Evil game, yes, even for 5], Im guessing the standard Deathmatch and last man standing will be available, but a team survival where in the survivors have to reach point C before a time-limit or before they all get killed by the B.O.W. players would be a great addition.

just.........please........ tone down the six-axis controls, they slightly made me cry in Confrontation.

According to http://news.teamxbox.com

During the demo the actions of the player could lead to the death of series protagonist Leon Kennedy.

So we get to kill a Kennedy? And I thought the racism in RE5 was tasteless.

Awesome. Four player co-op. Sold on the game already.

Well that was certainly....interesting. I can't really judge it based off of that trailer, but to me that trailer just left me completely uninterested in the game. It just looked like a few soldiers blasting through hordes of zombies relatively easily. It didn't really look like a "tactical third person shooter" to me. I really hope that the game actually is one though, where you actually have to watch your ammo, rely on your comrades abilities, and where diving into a horde is a no no. As for messing with the cannon, I'm pretty sure this game's story is going to basically be a fan-fic come to life. I doubt that this game is actually cannon. I still have a little spark of hope for this game, but that video left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

I like the series but this one has yet to interest me. we'll see.

I will play it for 3 main reasons.
1) Its on PC.
2) Its in a dark, creepy, fucked up city. Where Resident Evil games belong.
3) It has fucking zombies again!
But I will reserve judgement on if it is a "Resident Evil" game or just a game with the title Resident Evil. To me the series died when 4 was released.

Sounds like fun I'm one of the weirdos who actually really liked RE5 co-op story mode.

hahaha!

Do I smell a full series reboot?

Hmmm a team shooter game, set in a city overun by hoardes of the undead where you can play with up to 4 friends... now where have I heard of a game like that before...

OH HAI!

Seriously though... "rewrite the history" of Racoon city? It's so obvious that Capcom have NO IDEA where they're taking their franchise. Moving away from the typical "Umbrella releases zombies into Racoon city" scenario was a bum move. Why else would we keep getting the same games all the time?

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles went over the events of the first 3 games
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles goes over the events of 2 and Code Veronica
Now we have this which also seems to be going over the 2nd possibly 3rd games

Resident Evil 5 was a real mess in the storyline department, I think Capcom just wish they could undo everything they did to Umbrella since Resi 4. Now we actually get to re-write their history and even kill the main characters off? Nice move Capcom, nice move.

I'm pretty sure the entire game isn't canon. It's just for fun. It's not a reboot or anything. You just get to see "what if" scenarios.

FUCKING Racoon City! D< Ok seriously, I'm so FUCKING sick of the FUCKING city that i wish they'd drop a FUCKING Nuke on it already!....Oh wait.

Sorry about all that but....cmon guys, we've already had Res evil 2, 3, Outbreak and Outbreak 2 set in Racoon city. I mean, why settle for just the same city when other games have used european villages and Wartorn Africa as settings.

TlDR: Racoon cities a bit overdone, can't we just set it somewhere else outside of somewhere we know is just going to get nuked anyway?

The new Devil May Cry is proof they just have no idea what they're doing, period.

I'm pretty sure it's intended to be a spinoff, as according to http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/23631/Resident-Evil-Operation-Raccoon-City-Announced/:

Capcom is allowing players to "play loose" with the series cannon. During the demo the actions of the player could lead to the death of series protagonist Leon Kennedy.

So unless they plan to write off RE4+5 entirely, yet somehow make a fixed plot that players have a feel of control over this wont be the new cannon. And really I don't see them doing that after all the effort with which they tried to make sense of the story in RE5 (and we know what happened there).

But still, I am very exited about the prospects of more multiplayer (Co-op especially) games, I really enjoyed playing co-op on RE5 as long as the story was firmly out of my mind. This seems to be what they are going for here.

Same here i honestly think about trying it even if it is different

Regardless of what people say, I'm looking quite forwards to this!
RE4 and RE5 are good games, but earlier today I was playing RE2 and I was reminded of the true soul behind the series. Confined spaces, limited ammo and zombies comming to eat your brains.

I'm hoping that can capture that and I'm quite excited to see how it turns out! :D If it is heavily 'inspired' by good, though 'untrue' zombie games like L4D(2) and has the players breaking crates/boxes for ammo... screw it.

Meh, maybe they're going with the Christmas lights theory of plot and story, if they just keep working on the same time period eventually they'll get the damn things untangled and set into a coherent narrative.

And kudos to the L4D reference.

Well, I've already been blasting several zombies online with Left 4 Dead and it's sequel and in Killing Floor.

BUT, ever since Outbreak got released (and was hugely dissapointed by it), I was longing for a proper Resident Evil Online experience and no, Resident Evil 5 doesn't count, in fact, let's pretend it never existed, shall we?.

It could be interesting and I'm slightly excited since it's coming for the PC.

I'm getting an updated "Resident Evil: Outbreak" vibe from this. Which is...good?

that was a really bad trailer in my opinion still looking forward to it though

I`m getting just one vibe from this : L4d clone under the RE franchise umbrella.

And the "What the hell is going on here" reminds me more of the bad writing Capcom is known for than an intrigue for the game . Come on, it`s Raccoon City, everybody knows what happened.

I'm looking forward to the game and will definitely give it a try - it sounds great - but my fucking god, that trailer was annoying as hell to watch.

HankMan:

/facepalm

Susan Arendt:

I wouldn't mind an updated RE: Outbreak, but I absolutely hate the feel of SOCOM. As much as I love Resident Evil in general, if it has too much of that SOCOM influence it'll be a pass for me.

Reboot? Not like they have a choice, they did a stupendous job of killing off the series' last major antagonist in a damn volcano.

I don't so much mind the idea of this, but I can't help but get the feeling that it will just be a 3rd person L4D with the Resident Evil logo slapped on it. Though, it'd be interesting to have a game that has slow zombies in it again; as much as I liked Las Plagas (notzombies), the whole fast zombie thing popularized by 28 Days Later has been overused drastically.

Susan Arendt:

But I'm not a little girl with a backpack and some pepper-spray. So I am disappoint.

If they have mechanics to split up the squad, and have that separated squad member actually need saving, and give me a reason to be the one crazy bastard who goes back for Billy, with my other two team-mates screaming "you'll never make it!" then this'll be a good game.

Gears of Left 4 SOCOM

But.... I might buy it...looks like it could be fun for once...lets hope the gunplay is amusing (IE not the 2nd person Trigger -> shoot -> Run)

Perhaps HUNK can be your CO? or even a boss...or something...

Why do you hate happiness, Capcom? First you killed Dino Crisis, then you put Megaman Legends on the 3DS, and now you're turning Resident Evil into a L4D clone.

"Did that bandwagon just get heavier?"
