Anonymous Halts Sony Attacks Affecting PSN Users

And to think, the threat read like an angry child. Who'd have foreseen this? Hilarious!

What the...? Rational thought?

I'm stunned.

Anonymous has impressed me.

"Sorry for hindering your gaming, were totally cool with bothering innocent people who rely on their mastercard though."

This gets an apology and not the mastercard business? *shrug* Anons priorities are strange... At least its a step in the right direction. As I've stated before, seems like anon are maturing :D

EDIT: Anon might have apologised for the mastercard business, but I havent read it at least. If so, ignore what I wrote :D

I never thought I'd see the day that Anonymous pulls out of one of their little "protests".
Sure they might have apologised, but I doubt the sincerity of it.

Is that some plugging of Uncharted 2 there I see, hmm?

Very interesting development. Can't wait to see what they come up with, if anything, to continue from here vs. Sony. My guess? They might try to get some kind of pro-anon message on a Sony frontpage.

Why don't people just send emails or letters requesting SONY allow Linux support and such that they have removed?

If only %1 of users used Linux, and only 20% of that original 1% asked or petitioned SONY, of course SONY wouldn't even take a second look.

OT: So they attacked Sony and just thought they nothing would happen to the ordinary person?

arc1991:
Ok i'm lost...why are anonns attacking Sony?...

I would of thought Microsoft would of been a prime target...

The lawsuit against the Geohotz is what brought this on.

What exactly did you fix? If you are referring to Anonymous=Terrorists then don't bother. You can't fix what aint broke. To use unlawful attacks against an institution in order to get retribution or to change policy is terrorism.

If they really want to hurt Sony they should just develop a better product.

how exactly does anonymous give a press release?

You know what's ironic? I got a 404 error when I tried to view the news post outside of the forums.

Same here, lol.

OT: The thing that most annoys me about the PSN going down is I can't watch Hulu on my big screen. I don't play many games online, but I do enjoy the features that the PSN enables. Glad it won't be down because of outside forces.

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned this, But you know you can just use TVersity instead. I use it for playing non .mwv files off my laptop on the 360 myself but I know it has the ability to play video off Hulu.

If people ignore anonymous they'll go away. Why does the Escapist keep giving them free publicity?

They are attention seeking basement dwellers. They are not news worthy.

If you pay attention to the numerous Anon headlines and scour through Anon related threads on the forum you'd find that both the Escapist editors and the Escapist readers are majority pro-Anonymous.

There was a poll that confirmed this too. But I'm too lazy to look it up for you.

So this is why the PSN has been screwing me over constantly...

Yeah, trying play online PS3 at the moment has been horrible, with disconects every hour or so, and updates being realy difficult to download. Good to hear it's stopped though, I'm getting a bit tired of Anomynous really.

I'm loving the Uncharted 2 support here! Nice to see the fans on the prowl.

Can anyone name bigtime execs who have ever been brought down because of Anon? Or is it just "Woot, we randomly inconvenienced part of the company for a while we're the heroes" and internet pundits gleefully adore them.

Aaron Barr.

If that was a genuine question, you will look up him, his company, what they were doing and what played out when Anonymous got involved.

It was, I did, and I thank you for informing me on this issue.

Still, it seems like the group orchestrating this well put together attack on a truly corrupt target and the group taking disorganized jabs at Sony aren't even remotely connected.

That's the very nature on Anonymous: they are everyone and they are no one.

They are not an organization.

Their use of the Guy Fawkes mask is very suiting, because what they are is an idea.-=

V for Vendetta:
There's no flesh or blood with this cloak to kill! There's only an IDEA. Ideas are bullet-proof.

But Aaron Barr was right on one of his uncoveries. Anonymous although having no real organization has some highly reputable members who others see as defacto leaders such as Q, Moot, CommanderX, Weev, Fortuny, GirlVinyl and other /b/tards are held in high regard and help organize ops. It's said that moot himself helps. The raids on Sony, Westboro Baptist Church and HBGary were all orchestrated by the same people.

Nope, hadn't been mentioned. Thanks for the tip :)

And more OT about Anon having/not having leaders: The very nature of how people work as a group means there has to be some sort of leader/head figure(s). Anon as an amorphous blob of internet people is just very broad and bad generalization, that'd be like a country without a head of state. It doesn't work in the long run.

Being a loose organization doesn't make something "An Idea", it just means that they lack truly formal leadership and might act randomly sometimes for having poor organization.

Also, I will say that I think the use of Guy Fawkes masks is suiting, but not for the reason you say. Alan Moore using Guy Fawkes masks in V was intended to redefine a British icon in an ironic way, implying radical thought. Anon uses the Guy Fawkes masks because they think V for Vendetta was cool (and more likely are thinking of the movie), implying mob mentality and hidebound following masquerading as radical thought.

This is the conversation as I've been hearing it:

Anonymous: "We're totally sorry we so completely ruined all of everything there."
World: "Huh? What do you mean? I didn't notice anything. I mean, the site was down for a couple minutes, but--"

Anonymous: "Oh, yeah, we totally rocked their shit for awhile there. It was almost scary how unchecked our power was growing."
World: "I'm sorry--you checked what now? I was in the middle of a game, didn't hear you."

Anonymous: "In the future, we'll try our best not to be quite so awesome directly at you..."
World: "Uh... thanks, I guess."

Anonymous: "...but you should totally expect us to bring that kind of pain and thunder to the Sony people until we, in our might, have complete satisfaction for the wrongs they've done."
World: "I'm sorry. Are you still talking? Dozed off for a second."

Anonymous: "We'll even get information on an executive's kids, to prove our point."

And that's where I officially move from "whatever" to "what the hell is wrong with you?" You want people to take this 'movement' seriously, to deal with the issue intellectually, and then you use tactics that are guaranteed to put them in exactly the fear state that will further entrench the current management?

They're going after a hacker. You're going after kids. They're keeping things in the courtroom, and you're trying to go to their homes. Sony may do some things I don't like, but it's never even been a remote possibility in my mind that they're going to show up at my home, place of work, or my kids' schools or something and terrorize my personal life. And at least if Sony wrongs me, I can take them to task.

In the few times Anonymous has displayed any actual power, all they've done is childishly wave it about like daddy's rifle. And all they've accomplished is making right many people afraid of faceless mobs that so irresponsibly throw around that kind of power.

Phase 1: DDoS Sony

Phase 2: ???

Phase 3: Justice.

I am unaware of the effects of shoving countless packets into servers over and over. Will Sony be purged of all evil or do we all just bicker about right and wrong while nothing actually happens?

Basically, is there a plan to this or is it just anon attacking Sony?

Well that is very sad. Although I shouldn't be surprised that the Escapist jumps on the 'Anonymous is so great herpa derp' wagon after seeing the current Internet fad win March Mayhem and all the finalists be the usual/stock popular developers.

It's becoming increasingly clear the Escapist is full of people who follow trends, other people's opinions or the general consensus. It is sad that you tell me that the Escapist supports a bunch of basement dwelling teens. Anonymous do fuck all and if they did do something that was of concern, do you really think they wouldn't be caught? They're kids playing childish games with little consequence.

Jonluw:
If I was an executive at Sony right now, I would try to find some way to hold the userbase hostage in order to get rid of anonymous.
Something like PSN mysteriously going under "maintenance" every time Sony is under an attack.

I think it would be pretty obvious after a few times, and holding the userbase hostage would probably cause a boycott.

Not that I give a shit; my PS3 was bust JUST after the warranty, and I nver go online anyways.

I was never affected, but god Annon really need to get over it.

I was thinking, given that they left "Chocolate Rain" on the Judge's voice-mail, next up will be knocking on Sony's door and running away before anyone can open the door.

Actually, one Escapist writer had the nerve to refer to them in an article on their DDoSs related to Wiki-leaks as "freedom fighters." How anyone can take a bunch of juvenile delinquents and turn them into "freedom fighters" is beyond my limited comprehension skills.

My inside source told me that happened only because PS3 users amongst Anonymous themselves complained.

I'll be honest, I don't agree with Anonymous on their war.

But they have my respect for keeping the civilians out of it.

How are they "keeping the civilians out of it" when they're seeking dox on the children of Sony executives? Those children aren't armed combatants in the war. They're unarmed civilians.
