Winter is coming on Sunday!

Years of anticipation will culminate on Sunday evening when the first episode of HBO's adaptation of George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones airs in the United States. The casting has been nearly perfect, the marketing push has been innovative, and all of the trailers and teasers have brought me to a near fever pitch of excitement. Review copies of the first few episodes have gone out to a few outlets and critical response has generally been positive, but it's also possible to evaluate the impact of the show quantitatively.

For example, we know that the 10 episode season will cover the events of the first 694 pages of Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice series. But did you know that the budget of the show is estimated to be about $50 or $60 million or that it's HBO's highest priced series in international markets, beating out The Sopranos by almost 50 percent?

Here are some more factoids about the show and the books as compiled by The Hollywood Reporter:

$2.5 million-plus: The amount episodes are fetching overseas.
3,188: Number of pages in the U.S. hardbacks of Books 1-4. (A Storm of Swords ran longest at 973 pages.)
583: The crew at its biggest.
294: Number of weeks between the publishing of Books 4 and 5. (Crows was published Nov. 8, 2005; Dragons will be released July 12, 2011.)[Yeah, right. I'll believe that when I see it. Damn you, Martin! *shakes fist*]
250: Approximate number of extras used on the biggest day of production
170: Total production days.
162: Total number of speaking roles in the series.
130: Number of helmets created for the series.
5: Number of topless women in the pilot.
4: Number of beheadings in the pilot.
3: Number of beheadings before the opening credits.
3: Number of times "winter is coming" mentioned in the pilot.
2: Number of sex scenes in the pilot.

All of that adds up to what I hope is an amazing production that lives up to the sex and swords of the novels. HBO hasn't officially announced that it will pick up production of the second season, which would dramatize the events of Martin's second book A Clash of Kings, but all indications point to good ratings both domestic and abroad.

I just hope that the show survives until we can see the events of A Storm of Swords. What happens in that book is just crazy. The production is going to need a whole lot more extras and some green-burning fire.

Look for The Escapist staff giving their impressions of the pilot on Monday morning.

You had me at "Beheadings"

:_)

I first saw a 5-minute trailer, went out and got the book. I absolutely love it. I can't wait for tomorrow night.

Watched the first 15 minutes of the pilot, and apart from one very strange edit(if you watched it, you probably know what I'm talking about), it's looking good. The casting especially.

Can't wait to see it!!!!!!OMGWTFBBQ!!!11

And there's going to be boobs and sex scenes too! Yay!

Listening to the Yogscast interview with Hodor :D
Excited, but I'm not actually going to be able to see it D:

Yes, the casting is spot on. However, there's one major problem that people seem to be omitting. I'm not sure if it's because not everyone has read the books or what, so let's hide this behind a spoiler warning:

As much as I might like to laugh at the information in the article title and the predictable male response to it (I believe it goes something like "Boobies, yay!"), I can't really snark from a position of intellectual superiority here - knowing the pilot episode's "bare breast quotient" makes me want to watch it more now, damn it all.

So much for the illusion of sophistication!

Wait, Sean Bean is in this series? Okay, I definitely have to watch this now. Now if only I actually had HBO...

Over here in good old Blighty its being shown on a Monday, not sure about the rest of the world.

Well, I'd love to see it.
But I'm somewhat skeptical, no idea why. I loved the books, though. But this hasn't really hyped me up.
Fingers crossed, hope it'll be a great show.

I'm almost tempted to go out and order HBO just for this. Almost.

Love the books, my hope now is that the show is as good as the trailers make it look. I'll be crestfallen if this show comes within even one nautical mile of being as craptastic as Terry Goodkind's Legend of the Seeker horse manure. shudders

I'm in.

I've never read the books. But I know there's a whole hullabaloo over them.

"And a partridge in a pear tree!" Sorry I had to XD

OT: Seriously I've read the books. AWESOME.

If you already have cable, HBO (at least via Comcast) is only $10/month for the next 6 months, and you can cancel at any time. So, $30 for 10 episodes - seems like a reasonable price to be able to watch the series now, in full HD (as opposed to waiting for Blu-Ray or downloading lower-fidelity torrents).

I've loved Sean Bean since the Sharpe movies. But Hollywood only casts him for two roles: the badass villain, or

I'm also really hoping it get at least to the third book, the crazy shit that happens in there will be the most jaw dropping moments ever shown on television.

Couldn't agree more. I've actually been thinking, since the series was announced, that I hope it'll last for at least three seasons. I just worry it'll go the way of Rome, and not get the ratings to justify the expense.

I wish I was in New York right now, cause HBO is working their asses off promoting this show

Yes, I fucking pumped for this, I've followed the production since July of 2009 when I posted a thread on here asking who would be cast in what roles were it made into a movie (before I knew it was already being made by HBO), so I've been there for almost the whole ride.

I'm not familiar with the series, but I've heard a lot of good. It's nice to see fantasy be given good attention. I hope who ever is in charge of the dark tower series gives it as much or more attention.

Oh man. If they fuck this up I am gonna be kicking soo much ass I will need to invest in like 7 new pairs of steel capped boots.

As for A Dance with Dragons, yeah... George R R Martin practically invented Valve time so July 12th is probably correct... itll just be 2013 at the earliest after even more delays. Dudes probably gonna fucking die before he finishes the series. It happened with Robert Jordan and David Gemmell so ya...
Anyway lets just hope it does not suck as much as A Feast for Crows did.

Can't wait for this to start. Not that I'm in the US, but I'm sure I'll be able to stream it from somewhere early next week.

thats tame compared to spartacus and gods f the arena isnt it?

also what is this about? The trailers just emphasisethat winter is bad. Why? The cold? Or scary monters?

um. Both?

There were totally 3 sex scenes. Just saying.

I like how the didn't count the tribal prostitution/rape as a proper sex scene. Also they didn't count how one of the topless women went topless twice.

Still a good pilot though, will be watching more.
