DICE: Battlefield 3 Looks Better on Consoles Because We're Making it for PC

Did hell freeze over? An EA exec stating its better to design for the PC and port to the 360/PS3? Never thought I would hear those words since most of Execs like to state that PC gaming is dead or dying.

As an avid PC gamer if I had no other reason to buy BF3, this right here is plenty of reason for me to buy it.

The thing is that Battlefield is one of the bastions of PC gaming, so that's probably why they're favoring the PC: they don't want to piss off their base. Console gamers don't give a crap as long as we end up with a good game in the end. The whole PC gamer inferiority complex will end when PCs and consoles start becoming the same thing, as all of our electronics will. Frankly I'm surprised consoles still exist. Their whole point was that you can hook them up to your TV. Now you can do that with your PC too, so the only difference is that you only have to buy a console every 5 years or so and don't have to worry about it otherwise.

TheComfyChair:
Wonder if anyone in the major gaming press is starting to realise that PC gaming isn't 'trailing behind', it's just making billions in the digital market?

The digital market, F2P and social games are huge on PCs. There's no denying that.

But games like COD and Medal of Honor sell overwhelmingly more copies on Xbox and PS3 than they do on PC. There's no denying that either, and that was my point.

Awexsome:
So... the PC gamers like to complain how making it for consoles ruins it for PC. Lets see if making it for PC ruins it for consoles this time.

Frankly - if there's any justice in the world - it should.

Well, I would have waited and bought this game cheaply in a Steam Sale or something had I not read this. However, if this is true, I'll probably pre-order from a source from which the devs will get the most cash.
Hopefully, this design ideal will start something of a trend!

That and the fact that while owned by EA, DICE are still sort of a seperate studio, and a god damned PC studio at that!! :D

Elitism is the belief or attitude that some individuals, who form an elite - a select group of people with intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience, or other distinctive attributes - are those whose views on a matter are to be taken the most seriously or carry the most weight or those who view their own views as so. *from Wikipedia.

If they wanted to make the game realistic, why do cars explode?

god dammit! not everyone has a fucking 5000 pound computer at their disposal.

if they break the bonds of current PC games required specs, hardly anyone will be able to enjoy these graphics, and FPS.

_alter_ego:

Because gasoline tends to ignite near flame or sparks.

Hero in a half shell:
Quick, someone find that "PC gamers happily dying..." image!
This is very interesting, We'll just have to wait and see which is better, scaling up from the weakest console, or down from the strongest. If this does show a marked improvement on porting games to different consoles, then this could become the norm for most games. Well done Battlefield.

I got you Leo, and you know what, I think I'm going to update it.....

EDIT: Go get em Duke!

i am all for making better games and i cant wait to play this...on my xbox simply because i find it a better experiences and the only problem with this article is the way people seem to treat consoles with contempt

yeah like that last modern warfare game where..we jumped mountain tops...on a snowmobile

the lack of a high pitched " SON OF A BITCH I Think i broke my balls!" left me with an odd expression across my face.

While nice to hear it still just looks like a generic brown CoD ripoff. Come grab my attention when you're boasting something new for the industry rather than just playing the graphics card. (No pun intended there I swear!)

Yes! This is how you develop for multi-platform play. This is why I have been saying for years that PC gaming will never die.

Thank gods for DICE. I hope like hell that their plan works, it will prove to the industry that ignoring the PC was the worst thing they ever did. That developing for the most powerful enegine and scaling down from the top is the best method.

Now if we can just convince a developer that makes the kind of games I personally enjoy to see that this method is the best. Maybe Bioware will take note of their fellow EA developer is this goes well.

And what do you mean boring generic brown? There is more colour in that small trailer then in the entir COD series. The games got a lot of colour, it actually reflects reality more then COD's brown overlay ever did.

That title kinda scared me for a sec. I thought it meant "BF3 looks better on Consoles than on PC".

COD not so much, since it hasn't been well received on PC since MW1. But games like MoH, Crysis 2 and Bad company 2 (major fps titles) all sell fine on PC (in between ps3 and 360 usually), and with digital distribution the profits from PC are easily over 50% of the total.

Remember, retail sales figures have been broken since steam arrived. Did you really think that a platform with 30 million users on one digital distribution mini-platform only sells ~15% of each game? Digital makes up for around 60-70% of PC sales (according to valve and the numbers correlate pretty well in bad company 2 with the retail figures and registered EA accounts of BC2), and not a single one is recorded via sales charts.

The fact that many exclusively console (since i have all 3 major platforms) owners believe the retail figures without a second thought is worrying in terms of the lack of analytical ability many seem to have :/

Ah well, that's the world. Show them a stat and they'll blindly believe it.

P.S. Did you know that not a single copy of bc2:vietnam was sold on any platform! If the figures that say PC doesn't sell very many copies are to be believed. Weird that. :D

There is still going to be complaining. The thing is, the very fact that there even is a console version means the PC Gamers are going to bitch and moan, except instead of blaming devs, they can just say that it was "dumbed down for the consoles". And they're still going to blame consoles for every little minor flaw the game has.

If you re-read your dictionary definition, you may realise that it actually doesn't apply in this situation.

PC gamers often have to put up with crappy ports of games developed for consoles. Fact: I have several examples in my own games library. Finally, a game comes along that has been developed specifically for the PC. I am a PC gamer. I applaud this decision on the part of the devs, and as such intend to back it with my purchase of the game.
And if, as a bi-product of this move (that will invariably make this game more enjoyable for me personally), the console experience as a whole is somehow impacted... well, you guys can't moan, because PC users have been putting up with it for years.

How - pray tell - is that Elitist?

Bull. Bad Company 2 made me lose faith in the Battlefield series.

It's not battlefield, it's bad company. A console game.

It's like losing faith in grand theft auto because you thought liberty city stories was a cut down game (which it was, but it was on the PSP! The PS2 port was a port!).

Thanks for catching up news section. Been talking about the comments he made about this here for sometime already:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.276574-Pushing-PC-envelope-helps-console-development-says-Battlefield-3-Producer

The message of this is that pushing the envelope on the PC help give the consoles experience according to DICE, so everybody wins. This is not a PC vs console thing. Nice to see this postulation, that I have argued repeatedly, being confirmed.

Because, um, SHUT UP! I bought a console so now i have to tell everyone that their views on it are wrong and it's more awesome than anything else ever! PC people are elitist because it's better and it's not FAIR! *going to happy place*

Seriously, anyone crying elitist really just wants a PC but can't get one and are trying to cover up that fact by QQing and being jealous. It's annoying and childish. If you want a PC, get a job and buy one. No point trying to (attempt to, since all it does it make you look like a moron) degrade those who have got a job and indeed got one.

Pro-tip: buy all platforms with games that interest you! For the love of god don't complain when another platform is better either.

This better end up more like Battlefield 2 than Bad Company.

If you want it to start a new trend, you'll want it to make Console Gameplay better than it usually is.

Simply because there's no denying that publishers make more money from the Console Front than they do from the PC Front -- I'll assume that's because more people own a Console than they do a Gaming PC, whether adequate or high-end. If they develop from a PC standpoint first, then scale it back for Consoles and Consoles benefit from it as a whole and from this sales increase... then everyone wins. PC Gamers don't have to deal with ports of any sort and Console Gamers have a better experience.

Why wish what the PC had to deal with on the Consoles? That just ruins it for everyone.

EDIT: I should probably add that what I said regarding the PC not having to deal with ports is more than likely the best case scenario. It's not guaranteed, but the chances of it happening are probably a lot higher if Consoles benefit from this.

I would probably get it for the PC, because someone would make a deathmatch mod. That's right, I believe that Deathmatch is the best gamemode. Oh sure, big name FPSes have their own awesome objective, Halo mastered CTF and CoD has that quirky Domination mode, but Slayer, Deathmatch, WHATEVER, is the best I believe. One of the reasons I didn't play BF:BC2 that much (why the fuck is there an achievement for playing the multiplayer for 15 minutes)?

Serving UpSmiles:
Good Trailer

OT: I am really pumped for this, i do want to see the co-op campaign gameplay before i considor buying this though, by the looks of it how can you make that sniper part anywhere as exciting with some dude crawling behind you.

Why does anyone snipe instead of using close-ranged guns? People like different things. Just find a guy who likes sniping.

I hope the gameplay is similar to BattleField 2. I loved getting in a squad and actually using teamwork to take the objectives, it worked hilariously well especially when the other team wasn't as organised as we were.

Hoping for a return to form from DICE, the fact that they are focusing on PC is heartening. Maybe we will see the return of large maps for the 64 player games, rather than squeezing too many players on a 32 player map. I hope against hope for a return of bots. I actually quite liked BF:BC2 but there is a reason people are still playing Battlefield 2 (and it isn't just Project Reality).

While nice to hear it still just looks like a generic brown CoD ripoff. Come grab my attention when you're boasting something new for the industry rather than just playing the graphics card. (No pun intended there I swear!)

You mean like how COD was a Battlefield ripoff? The Battlefield series has been around longer than COD. They did WWII first, they did Vietnam first, and then did modern warfare before the COD series (they also did future, which you just know that is coming up for COD). If anyone is doing the ripping off, it's the COD series. Of course COD eliminated vehicles and added killstreak perks for that true sense of "realism."

Okay so can someone relate to me the main difference between the Battlefield games, and the Bad company games? I came into it with BFBC2, which I greatly enjoy. How do the games differ from, say, a multiplayer standpoint?

I think I love DICE.

I've only been saying this for years...

When a game is developed with the PC as the lead platform, the developer can shoe-horn a lot of little goodies and extras into all versions since the PC (generally) has fewer limitations.

In the end, everybody wins!

Every time I see something like this I feel compelled to say that COD was a spin-off of Medal of Honor. Nobody seems to remember Medal of Honor... I love that franchise.

Well, that is pretty tough since there are different Battlefield games. Yet the main difference is past Battlefield games were PC only. The maps were huge, and they supported 64 player matches. Battlefield 2 had jets, as with other Battlefield games that had era appropriate aircraft (something that will be back in BF3). Other Battlefield games also had prone (which of course led to the famous dolphin diving). Those are probably the major hitters, with the huge maps and 64 players being the major things. If you want more, go to any Battlefield forum. You will not have any trouble having hardcore Battlefield fans list the differences they didn't like. I have been playing Battlefield games since BF1942. BFBC2 certainly had a slightly difference feel, but I thought it has some nice additions and is very fun. For some reason some of the hardcore fans get ticked about it. Seems like wasted energy to me, but to each their own.

Well, if you want to that you could say Battlefield games go back to Refractor Games that made codename Eagle, which featured multiplayer modes Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag in 1999. That was the precursor to the BF games. The COD link to the Medal of Honor series goes to Allied Assault, which was 2002 and their first true multiplayer game (unless you count their laser tag game). The other MoH games were console games, which only had split screen type multiplayer (plus they were not done by 2015 Inc. which is the link to Infinity Ward). Besides, the first MoH and CoD multiplayers (plus the laser tag one) were just Quake multiplayer games.

My thoughts exactly. It doesn't matter how good your graphics engine is. Everything in the footage I've seen is, content wise, the same old stuff we've seen in Battlefield. I mean, feel free to increase the immersion guys, but no matter what you do, Battlefield looks like Battlefield. This ain't no Crysis.

And to those ends - god the game looks boring so far. Follow soldiers through doors. Follow crouched soldiers then shoot a rocket. Shoot at some far-off targets. Incredibly well-rendered doors, soldiers, and targets, mind.
