Zynga and Other Game Devs Abandon MySpace

Zynga and Other Game Devs Abandon MySpace

There's just no love for MySpace from anyone these days, including the developers who had games on the site.

Remember when MySpace thought it could be a social gaming hub? And then, after its revamp was finished, about half its workers were fired via Xerox? Well, now the site's public death by inches is continuing, and this latest development is particularly embarrassing: Casual game developers are shutting their MySpace portals.

The latest public coffin nail came about yesterday with Zynga's discontinuation of Mafia Wars on MySpace. According to Edge:

In a post on the game's MySpace page, Zynga confirms that Mafia Wars was discontinued yesterday, April 18. Instead it points players towards the game's official site, mafiawars.com, where the game continues, with the developer promising an improved experience with new locations.

Zynga last month discontinued another MySpace game, RPG Street Racing. However it also cancelled the game on Facebook, where Zynga is the runaway market leader, with 266 million monthly active users across all its games, 200 million ahead of its nearest competitor.

Of course, Zynga isn't the only company to abandon the sinking ship that is MySpace. Playdom recently announced that its RPGs Overdrive and Bloodlines were going away, and RockYou pulled all of its games (RockYou Pets, Superhug!, Speed Racing, and Truth Box) from the site.

The writing seems to be sitting pretty clearly on the wall these days: Between its dwindling user base, developers leaving the site for more fertile digital pastures, and NewsCorp continuing to look for a buyer to take this money pit off its hands, it seems like MySpace's days are pretty numbered.

What he said. I seriously thought that it was closed down years ago after it tried to remake itself into a music site..

And wasn't it owned by yahoo?

Nope, News Corp bought it back in... what? 2005 or so?

Damn, That sucks for MySpace.

Makes me wonder in the future if there will be a great Social medium that will break out and over-shadow Facebook.

What the hell IS keeping Myspace alive at this point?

Myspace still exists?

Huh, the more you know I guess.

I guess I should finally getting around to deleting my account as well. I haven't used it in a couple of years.

I wonder why Myspace never kept up it's popularity. I figured more people liked the customization it offered. I guess not.

It's really quite sad to see Myspace falling so dramatically from power. It used to be pretty much the best way of finding great new bands but... well, you can see what's happened to it. I hadn't logged in for a while and was quite content to just let it be, but then I had to log in for some reason after the revamp and found the whole thing such a complete mess that I deleted my profile there and then. Apparently I was far from alone in that.

The PornBots?

I bet this guy:
Photobucket
is really regretting his tattoo now.

Am I the only one seeing this and thinking it makes myspace look Better?

Hell that was one of the biggest driving factors of why people ditched it... getting constantly spammed by add on games.

I mean really there is no hope for it at this point unless something dramatically changes with it, but at least it seems like a nicer place now without all that fluff crap.

Can I buy the domain for $100? I want to set up a shock site to sucker nostalgic people who go through their bookmarks.

The only good thing on MySpace is indie bands from Cardiff. Hopefully they'll survive.

What's MySpace? Huh.

Well, I don't have a Facebook account either so this makes little difference to me.

well duuhhhhhhhh!!!! Youtube, Facebook & Twitter are the rage now!!

I bet fb will be outta the pic in 5 years, Twitter in 7. Youtube will dominate!!

I guess Myspace will be joining the has-been club soon.

Say hello to your friends ICQ, Netscape and Copernic :)

This news sounds as surprising in its recent nature as if I were to find out that movie distributors were just now giving up on VHS tapes.

The phrase "world's tiniest violin" is flashing through my head right now.

On the other hand, I'm always glad to see Zynga and News Corp. lose money.

Lol I thought Myspace was gone until I googled myself. I simply deleted my profile on there so it won't be indexed anymore. It's days are numbered.

Honestly, I bet the only reason they left was because they were losing money by being on Myspace...

So now Zynga will probably make more money! Which is as horrible as it sounds...

BA-HAHAHAHAHA! I'd hate to be him.

For 1, I didn't even know Zynga had bothered with MySpace.
For 2, the fact that MySpace still exists baffles me.

Orphan tears and child labor...

OT: Bout damn time they they left that misleading enterprise company. Which company am I talking about again? Zynga or Myspace?

velocity aidevica

I want to feel something but I don't

It'd be interesting to see a detailed timeline of Myspace's lifespan.

I recently did my companies Online I.T. Policy refresher course, it was quite funny how there was no mention of Facebook or Twitter. Rather the documentation said that while social media could be a useful tool too much time spent on MySpace was a breach of company policy. Why yes, I do work for a subsidiary of News Corp.

awwwww, now I can't have five more people possibly play my games... lol.

You were close- March of 2006. And wasn't THAT $580 million well-spent?! Brilliant move, Rupert Murdoch.

Myspace? Never knew it actully existed. Then again I don't even have a facebook accont.

I'm actually pretty pissed off.

Because I got Myspace back in the day not because I wanted too, but because my friends constantly pestered me.

Then I had to move to Facebook when everyone else did. And now that's dying as well!

I stopped using Myspace because regardless of the PC or laptop I was using once I opened Myspace it always slowed to a snails pace.

Myspace going down the drain.... the only thing that came to mind is

Haha. funny this was made two years ago... and is quite relevent.

http://thosearentmuskets.com/sketches/internetparty2.php

If a "social networking site" is nothing more than obnoxious little girls with their glittery text, embedded click-trackers, and spam-bots, of course it will go down the drain. Now all that there is left to happen is to have FaceBook crash and burn. No really, why should FB exist since it has a history of gross privacy violations? Why should FB exist since it tracks its users -- WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION -- as they click through the internet through the "Like" buttons that are on every damn page?

Big brother is Facebook and most people don't even realize it.
