Meet Ms. 'Splosion Man's "2 Girls 1 Controller" Mode

Meet Ms. 'Splosion Man's "2 Girls 1 Controller" Mode

How many games ask you to control two characters at once - with only one controller?

Twisted Pixel's XBLA puzzle platformer 'Splosion Man was an unexpected success in 2009. While the indie developer is working on Kinect shooter The Gunstringer, it's also working on a 'Splosion Man follow-up - called Ms. 'Splosion Man, in the vein of Namco's omnivorous yellow puck.

Presumably Ms. 'Splosion Man has a normal mode like the original, but it also has an additional type of gameplay called "2 Girls 1 Controller," and if you don't get the reference then I'm certainly not about to explain it here.

The mode is exactly what it sounds like: One player must control two Ms. 'Splosion Mans ('Splosion Men?) on one controller. The left thumbstick and left shoulder bumper control the movement and 'sploding of one; the right thumbstick and right shoulder bumper control the movement and 'sploding of the other. Presumably, if either one dies it's back to the checkpoint.

Frankly speaking, this looks positively brutal. I could barely control one 'Splosion Man in the original - I don't think I could ever handle controlling two at once.

There will be more information on the game in the June issue of Game Informer.

That mode sounds like it will break my brain. Looking forward to it.

I really want to try this out lol. It looks like it could be a lot of fun.

What a crazy threesome that was!

I used to do something like that with an ancient game called vanguard ace...playing on 2player mode by myself. Entered the same controls for both, then the first thing I did was to go hard up against one side of the screen, so both planes/ships/things were in the same place. Basically a cheap way of doubling my firepower, but getting less score.

Two control sticks, though? Can you walk through each other?

Man, that really looks like it's gonna be rough. Thats like that whole rubbing your stomach and patting your head thing.

Oh my god, why the fuck would they do that!?

Schizoid on Xbox LIVE Arcade makes you control 2 ships using each Control Stick, It's fairly intense and gets pretty confusing.

Better increase the New Controller Budget. I do have friends though but it'll be fun for the challenge.

....Hopefully, It won't scarred me like the Last two girls one controller did.

Two girls + Atari Joystick eqaul= INCREDIBLE DESTRUCTION

That title made me a little worried. Glad to see that they are trying someting new. I hope it works out. New ideas can sometimes blowup in your face.(pun not entended)

After the disappointing first game, I've learned my lesson.

Did anyone else almost imediately think "WarioWare?"

"How many games ask you to control two characters at once - with only one controller?"

Err... there was this one game where you played one or two of two rabbits. There was an option to play both on the same controller. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

Any help? You control a red or blue rabbit, it was extremely coop centered, and the story involved capturing the moon or something.

Make use of that damn d-pad and make it a foursome!

I forgot about this game, gotta pick up again sometime.

Just for pun of course.

An intersting mode for those who like a challenge. And a funny pun.

I did get the reference... So I am very afraid to watch this video.

2girls1controller could have been the name of best nerd porn ever made. But a puzzle game has dibs instead. I am disappoint.

So it'll be kinda like Kuri Kuri Mix then?

For starters: PONG. Combat for Atari. Warlords. And then the 80's started.

So, basically, three that I can think of. Wait. Now four.

Thanks!

(To unsnark this, I know you meant _independant_ control.)

Half-Life: Decay

Two female characters, one control scheme being the keyboard and you have to switch back and forth. It's annoying.

OT: I dunno if this is such a good idea but I'll give it a go when it comes out. What's the worst that can happen? The single player is awesome and the two characters one controller thing sucks and they never do it again. Or it's a surprise hit and we get a slew of games like that.

Maybe you're thinking of The Adventures of Cookie & Cream for the PS2. What a crazy game it was. I couldn't pass the third level.

To those who say this looks hard... it is hard, but not mind numbingly hard. Me and a friend played through a level on 4 player co-op alone. Each of us using 2 controllers each. It was hard, but at least here we can focus on only one controller. I can't wait to get this game anyway.

Id give you a bro-hoof for that idea if I wasnt so disgusted by the mental image of 4 Ms.Splosions going at it. God it would be like the Hidenburg disaster!

There was an old Nintendo platformer that did something like this, but the two characters were on opposite sides of the screen and moved simultaneously, mirroring one another. Sort of puzzle-y. Can't recall the name...
