Rehashed Bing Promotion Bribes Gamers With Microsoft Points

Rehashed Bing Promotion Bribes Gamers With Microsoft Points

image

Like millions of divorced parents around the world, Microsoft wants to buy your love, and they're prepared to keep trying until they get it right.

A new promotion launched by Microsoft in support of its Bing search engine offers gamers 200 Microsoft Points just for joining the Bing Rewards program.

Now, before any of you puff up your angry neck frills and tap out an email complaining about how old this news is, let me reassure you: this is an entirely new promotion, which just happens to superficially resemble a poorly-received, earlier promotion.

Prior attempts to bribe users toward Bing drew a number of complaints. Apparently many gamers felt that being forced to use Internet Explorer and an intrusive Bing search bar wasn't worth the 200 points.

The new program however, ditches nearly all of its predecessors annoying caveats. The email I received this morning did require me to sign up for Microsoft's Bing Rewards program, but didn't seem to mind that I was doing so via Firefox on my MacBook Pro.

Of course, this wouldn't be reality if there wasn't at least one hitch; To claim the 200 points you have to remain a member of the Bing Rewards program for at least a month. On the upside, this also earns you 250 Bing Rewards credits (redeemable toward the standard rewards program fare), but on the downside, you're almost definitely giving Microsoft permission to drown your inbox in Bing promotional emails if they so choose.

So, is it worth it? That's up to you. I won't be leaving Google for anything less than a cartoonishly oversized bag of cash, but perhaps you don't feel the same search engine allegiance. Regardless, it's nice to see Microsoft learning from its mistakes.

This is so unfair! it's only available in the US, sucks so much anal dripage

I already use Bing over Google, so sign me up.

LoL, I hate Bing.... shit... I don't particularly like Microsoft all the much either. The only good thing they have ever made was every other OS.

Cool, where do I joi-

Yeah, I got this e-mail. Took the code to my Xbox LIVE Rewards page and put it in. Found out I have to sign up for bing rewards too. Okay, that's not too bad. I'll just sign up and never use it. No, wait. I have to be a member of Bing Rewards for a month AND I have to use Bing so they can collect information about my searches.

All tabs related to the promotion were then promptly closed. I don't want 200 MS Points that badly.

At least now you won't get spammed by Bing!

anal dripage

These words should never be muttered again.

And this promotion would be alright, if it wasn't just US and if you could actually buy anything substantial with 200 points.

Really?

Just one? At least 3 cartoonishly oversized bags of cash, with a promise for less spam.

Well, I actually prefer IE over Firefox, though I am starting to use Chrome alot more. But as for Bing searchbar, not a fucking chance. Sorry Mircrosoft (well, not really), Google or bust for me.

Maybe instead of dreaming up schemes to trick people into using your service, you can just make your service better until it grows by word of mouth. Google didn't become a name synonymous with internet searching because they gave away meaningless rewards.

There's a sound for this situation...I just KNOW it...

Oooo...uum...teee...oooh, wait, I FOUND IT!

I'm sorry but I'll need a lot more than 3 bucks worth of MS points to drop Google for a month, maybe if you bought me Honest Hearts MS we'd talk

I like how the Bing photo used in this article features a red panda, aka the firefox.

Shame I live in the UK....

Google is my perfered search engine and web browser and its really not worth it after all u just get 200.

Setting up a spam filter takes less then one minute ;p

I'd go for those 200 GP if it wasn't US only.

Microsoft Points are useless to me. Take your fake corporate love elsewhere Microsoft.

I clicked it 10 Times to celebrate this failure. (plus two,so this here is worth 12 failures)

I don't have an XBox or XBox 360 so where can I use these points? I assume GFWL, and even if Microsoft was handing out real money instead of their MS points I wouldn't be willing to try Live any time soon.

Well played Microsoft, well played indeed. Its too bad I don't have a 360 otherwise their bribe would have totally worked on me.

When I first saw bing I thought it was another browser hijacker search engine so I do have a bias against it to be honest. I found out later that it was by Microsoft and that didn't really get me enthusiastic about it enough to care either.

The sheer amount of garbage Microsoft has been doing to whore out Bing is really starting to bother me. You shouldn't have to advertise a search engine. They've even shoved "Bing it" into an episode of Hawaii 5-0, nobody says that.

I won't join, out of principle, I don't like bing.

Even if I was using a 360, I wouldn't go for this. I mean 200 points? It already sounds like a really small amount. I guess it does make sense though. But anyway, fuck Bing. I swore to never ever use it after seeing that damn video ad...over 9000 times, for the lack of a better word.

Captcha: toldwit Strangeway, sounds like a character from a bad crime novel.

Unfair yes

Anal Dripage? Ewwwww grosssss DX I never thought I could have a mental picture of an endorsement deal like that

Crap, I was already signed up for this out of sheer stupidity. Now I don't get 200 free points. :(

Oh well.

i already got the 400 points that i wanted. 200 more? and i only have to remain for a month? easy as pie...

i like to buy lots of rock band songs. don't judge me.

I don't know about anyone else, but Bing really just seems like an all-out failure on all front to me. Aside from this, another sign that the website is flagging and is desperate for traffic, the television commercials utterly confuse me.

Is that really what Microsoft things other search engines are like? ARE there even any search engines like that? They're shooting themselves in the foot. Bing is a late, late entrant into the web search market - people know what Yahoo and Google are, they know what they're like, they know what it's like to use them. NO search engine that I can recall has EVER been as bad as the ones in Bing's commercials, and anyone who sees the commercials instantly thinks, "Well, Google/Yahoo/etc isn't like that. I have no reason to switch to Bing."

I can always use more Microsoft points, but the promotion is only available in the US. Sorry Microsoft, no valuable search data for you.

No thanks.

Too bad there's nothing stopping you from just funneling all the microsoft crapmails into a black hole, like everybody else does these days.
