Free Multiplayer Map Pack Coming to Dead Space 2

Free Multiplayer Map Pack Coming to Dead Space 2

Electronic Arts is unleashing the Outbreak DLC pack, a pair of new multiplayer maps for Dead Space 2 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, absolutely free.

To me, the Dead Space franchise is an inherently single-player experience: one guy with a cool helmet and a Snap-on credit card, trapped inside oppressive, claustrophobic hallways with endless hordes of misshapen vomit monsters. But the multiplayer angle apparently isn't too bad either and EA is giving it some love with the Outbreak Map Pack, a collection of two brand-new multiplayer maps.

Okay, two maps isn't really much of a collection, but it's also free, so it's not like there's a whole lot to complain about here. First up in Outbreak is The Academy, which will take you through the schools of the Sprawl as you fight to activate the decontamination system and then make your escape. The comes The Concourse, taking place inside the Sprawl's mall, where you'll have to evade the Necromorph onslaught long enough to send a signal to a rescue ship.

Do these areas sound familiar to anyone else? I already massacred my way through one primary school on the Sprawl and I'm pretty sure I spent some time browsing the local shops, too. The Sprawl is, one would assume, a pretty big place, so it's a shame that these new maps don't appear to be going anywhere genuinely new.

But again, there's that whole "free" thing, although that hasn't stopped legions of idiots from finding things to howl about on Facebook. The Outbreak Map Pack will be out "soon" on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network; PC users, sadly, will have to get their lovin' elsewhere.

Oh awesome, a big name game finally releases a map pack for free, and for a game I have! I should go...

... figures.

I honestly wonder what's the point of them even releasing Dead Space 2 on the PC when they're clearly doing fuck-all in the means of supporting it.

Still, what with this trend of free DLC, I certainly welcome this. To be honest, I never even knew there was multiplayer in Dead Space 2.

EA giving things away for free? But I thought the Rapture was a load of nonsense. O.o

OT: I got rid of Deadspace 2 a week after I got it. The multiplayer was fun enough, but it got old pretty fast.

I don't mind free maps, will lighten up the mood before I rent Portal 2

boy I would be smiling if the fucking servers didn't cut out every time I play the damn game

But I... Just... Sold... DS2...

*slits wrists*

The only good part of Dead Space multiplayer is the intensity that can arise when things get close. The multiplayer is crude and in need of polish, but it does succeed thematically.

And the absolute best map is the one that makes survivors rush to escape pods after completing the final objective, because its every man for himself and no one want to be the one guy who didn't make it. Its one of the most consistently intent moments of any multiplayer game I've ever played.

Huh, I guess EA is trying to get on people's good side after the whole "being a DRM jerk" thing.
I think it's working...

why the fuck do we not get map packs on the pc? I mean pretty much all the effort is just making the damn things, no part of it should take any real effort to put the fucken thing on the pc version

If you've already sold it, I don't think 2 free maps would have really made you re-consider, would it?!

It is just to bad the format didn't survive the transition from the first game. I fell in love with the first game, couldn't get enough of it. It scared the hell outa me, and on more than one occasion I had to put the controller down and walk away, and get my wits about me again. Sadly Dead Space 2 didn't live up to the first one. It went from an engineer with no combat skills, to an Engineer/Space Marine. So sad really, as the story of this series is pretty good (considering its a horror franchise). But hats off to the free DLC!!!

If I had known about the maps I would have waited till they released to play them for about 10 laggy and unbalanced matches to then sell the game afterwards. DS2's multiplayer is one of those "Well you have really good ideas and a bunch of good mechanics, but the fact of the matter is that you suck because you're not polished. Like, at all" games like BS2's multiplayer. Both games just needed more time to entirely focused on the MP for balance tweaks and to make the gameplay smoother. Dedicated servers would likely have killed off the horrendous lag as well. I stopped playing BS2 because it warped players around the map like no other.

EA..free... never thought id hear this.

I've never played the series, but it sounds like you made the right decision already. You probably would have got less if you had waited so it's probably for the best that you didn't know it was coming out!

The devs might be focusing on the PC version last if they're working on it at all. Didn't the other DLC get delayed for the PC as well? If they're afraid of pirates I would think that with the the EA online pass business that the crappy multiplayer portion wouldn't be available to potential thieves.

Actually they didn't release the other DLC on PC at all. It still hasn't been announced for PC either.

Hold on a sec, so the DLC is free, but PC users wont get it? Guess that rules out the piracy theory.

Oh... Well that's fucking stupid. Does it really cost that much more to port the DLC to an already existing game?

DS2 is still $60 new at my Gamestop and is $55 dollars used and I only got $17 for my copy, although the people there said they had a large supply of them though. Still, I should have just gone with EBAY and sold it for $30 or something.

Meh, expected the lack of support after they blew off the PC DLC, no real point to release the map packs on the PC anyways since people left the multiplayer like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

pc players dont worry about the online pass since there isnt a used market for modern pc games but the pc version of things tends to get ignored a fucken annoyingly large amount of the time

Wow, that Facebook link reminded me why I hate people.

"I'm glad I pirated this. I also glad I got fifteen friends to pirate it. All you console kiddies can go fuck yourselves."

And there's also people this bad on the console side.

Anyway, nice to hear about that, one of the big problems with ds2 multiplayer was too few maps, other wise, it was pretty enjoyable.
