Batman Shows Off More of His New Wardrobe for Arkham City

When you're fighting crime in Arkham City, it pays to bring a change of clothes.

For someone who ostensibly spends all his time dispensing justice on the streets of Gotham City, Batman seems to have a surprisingly large amount of time to try out new looks and accessories. Fortunately for gamers, Batman's flirtations with the world of fashion design has given rise to no less than five alternate costumes in Arkham City, including outfits from two animated series, and a graphic novel that isn't actually out yet.

Going from left to right, the alternate Batsuits are as follows: Batman Beyond, The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Earth One, Retro 70s Batman, Batman: The Animated Series, and the default Arkham City skin. For those not up on the Batman multiverse, Batman Beyond is a animated series set decades in the future. Bruce Wayne, who is an old man now, has passed the mantel of the bat, along with high-tech Batsuit capable of flight and invisibility - powers that won't be making it to Arkham City - to a successor.

The Dark Knight Returns is also set in Batman's future, where a middle-aged Bruce Wayne is forced into becoming Batman again as crime in Gotham City gets worse and worse. The Dark Knight Returns was released in 1986, and created by Frank Miller of Sin City and 300 fame. Batman: Earth One takes the opposite route, and is set in Batman's past, telling his origin story in light of the new DC continuity. Earth One is scheduled to come out at some point later this year.

Retro 70's Batman doesn't need much in the way of explanation: it's the suit that Batman wore in the 70s. The Animated Series costume is pretty self-explanatory too, although it's interesting - not to mention rather exciting for fans of show - to see that Rocksteady has tried to make the character model look as much like the show as possible. It's not going to gel particularly well with the rest of Arkham City's art, but you can't have everything.

Gamers can pick up the different costumes by pre-ordering Arkham City from different retailers. Not every costume is going to be available in every country though, so getting them all is going to take some work.

Batman: Arkham City comes out for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 18th.

Where can I get the animated one?
That looks pimpin'.

This is pure awesomesauce. Though I am not sure about Batman Beyond's bulky look.

Me want Batman Beyond Game dammit! Now I'm this much closer. First it was the BB mod for Arkham Asylum, now they have an actual costume!

The thing I like the most is how each costume characterizes the different bulk and weight of the suit. The Batman Beyond suit is very slim and athletic, while the Dark Knight Returns suit is built like a tank.

It actually works. If you watch the first episode of Batman Beyond, it shows what Bruce Wayne looked like wearing the suit. He was still huge in it. Terry's just a teen, so he's skinny.

Hmmm... animated series costume or Batman Beyond costume... do I really have to pick? I guess I COULD wait till they release them as DLC but by then I'll have beaten the game several times. Maybe the collector's edition will have all the costumes.

I see a huge lack of an Adam West costume or does that one get a whole DLC by itself since it will include thing the fancy fighting noise pop up and special animation ? =p

So unless your only interested in skin over all the others, you are gonna have to order more then just one copy to get what you want?

Please tell me thats a joke....surely there will be a dlc option...otherwise this is saddens me to some new lows...

That's what I've been demanding since Arkham Asylum!

this once again points out the lack of love for Canada as ussual...

Nifty. I would have liked an AzBats suit, but I guess that wouldn't work (not Bruce).

Really REALLY torn on the Batman Beyond costume. Yes SH is right.. it only looks bulky because thats Bruce Waynes frame in the suit. (apparently its magical, because it fits a full sized man then fits a teen without any alterations?!?)

I love the look and it has me excited, but it feels so out of place. However. I guess my overall answer is to approve considering that if nothing else it helps to perpetuate the Batman Beyond line which is finally starting to make a comeback. Heres hoping.

A slight nitpick but the only suit missing is the film versions (Batman Begin or The Dark Knight), regardless I am content with any of those suits.

But I wanna have them all :(

Retro damn batman. That is shit has my name all over it.
nananananananana....

Remember the time when extra costumes used to be obtained by unlocking them in the game itself rather then paying extra money for them or being forced to buy the game from a certain store ? yeah , good times.

The Beyond suit just doesn't look right when it's all buff and musclely...

Yeah, I thought so too...but every male in Arkham Asylum was roided out. So maybe it's just a slight alteration on a generic male character model.

I was excited until I saw they were pre-order bonuses. Remember back when cool things like this could be unlocked by doing stuff in the actual game? I miss those days.

HOLY HELL, I want that blue retro outfit.

Glad to see that this problem has already been talked about. I find this idea interesting, but also terrible.

I don't think it will be to long after the game comes out for codes to show up on ebay for a couple of bucks a piece though.

ah the batman beyond suit! fuck yeahhhh

i always wished they had made a sandbox/adventure batman game with the batman beyond suit, flying and using the invisibility to get the drop on the bad guys..

Man, it's powered armor with the feel of cloth. I think it being magic has already been established.

Wow, the Batman Beyond skin looks bad as hell. Do want.

I didn't even read to the end of the article and I was saying to myself "Pre-order" exclusives and lo and behold -.-

Batman Animated Series costume...AND Batman Beyond costume?!

I just hope they're both available in the U.S. They'd better be future DLC if they aren't.

Batman Beyond costume = HELL YES!

Children these days need to be educated that there was a futuristic Batman cartoon that kicked ass!

It might be funny if they included an Adam West costume. Of course it wouldn't work because Batman wouldn't be wearing armor he would be wearing... Pyjamas. Yeah, shoot him once and he's dead.

I loved Batman beyond! And now we get a costume of it, this is so awesome. My question is how would it work? It doesn't even have a cape! The gliding will work since the BB suit has red bat wings so those could come out when gliding but what about things like the cape stun? Will he just smack you with the red wings? Because that might look silly, the gliding on the other hand will look awesome.

Batman beyond and batman animated series are definitely the ones I want, but will I be able to get both?

Nonsense, every version of Batman is nearly unbeatable, that includes Adam West Batman my old chum!

I know this is pedantic to the point of absurdity but the Earth One costume has been Bruce Wayne's regular costume for the better part of a year now.

Adam West Batman! WE DEMAND IT!

Damn, too many games coming out that look good. Deus Ex, Arkham City, Battlefield 3...
I only have time and money for Skyrim...

On second thoughts I think Adam West Batman is nearly unbeatable. You have to be if you fight people with POW! WHAM! and OUCH! I also believe now that Burt Ward Robin would be unbeatable. I mean he isn't wearing any pants, someone is going die of laughter. At least we won't see any Bat nipples in Arkham City. (Unless they decide to have bullets shoot out of them)

I'd take all of them. Wouldn't it be awesome if choosing Batman's costume would automatically swap enemy textures to match the outfit?

HOLY BALLS THAT'S AWESOME!

Although Animates Series Bats looks a little creepy for some reason.

Now if only we could get Azrael's suit in there...

I thought that was his big return/batman inc suit when i first saw it. Is Earth One what DC's calling the result of their new reboot, or is this just a story from the multiverse that they constantly try and fail at micromanaging?

I'm not so sure. The Adam West costume runs into the same problem that the Batman Beyond costume does: that character was agile and lean. Batman, as depicted in the comics and in Arkham Asylum, is most definitely buff, especially with the somewhat brute-force fighting style he uses in the game.

Plus, I never really liked the Adam West version. It reeked of the "safe, family friendly" attitudes which made more serious discussions about personal tragedy incredibly difficult to adequately discuss.

That, and there was no Two-Face (for the same "family friendly" reasons). While the Joker is Batman's number one foe, his complex relation with Harvey Dent/Two-Face is much more interesting, especially considering that he's essentially a parallel of Batman who chose taking his pain out through criminal acts rather than Batman's vigilantism. It's one of the reasons Batman is much more sympathetic to Dent and, in most origin stories, he also is semi-responsible for Harvey's condition, which haunts Bruce and is embraced by Two-Face's duel personality. To put it simply (if you'll forgive the pun): They're two sides of the same coin. One fights for the justice of law, the other fights for the justice of chaos.
