Watch Sony Advertise Uncharted 3 With a Sandcastle

Who says videogames and beaches don't mix?

One thing you can say about Sony - it isn't afraid of doing unusual things with its advertising. While most of the world is advertising on TV or websites, or in papers and magazines, Sony went its own way, and decided to advertise Uncharted 3 through the medium of sand.

Created for the Interactive & Digital Entertainment Festival, which took place in Cannes, France back in June, the sandcastle - although sand sculpture is probably a much better term - is the work of Urban Act, a marketing company based in Saint-Ouen, on the outskirts of Paris, and was created using promotional material as a guide. It's not clear from the video exactly how long it took to make, but it was a least two days.

It's an interesting way to advertise a game, and like the kid in the video says, no doubt it will have attracted attention from people, some of whom might have ignored more traditional advertising, like the huge Tomb Raider and Hitman billboards you can see in the background.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception comes out for PS3 on November 1st.

Well it would have gotten my attention if i was spending my summer anywhere near a beach when that happened, but nothing short of the chaos theory will make me buy Uncharted 3.

Too bad it's not a sandbox game *rimshot*

I haven't played the Uncharted games yet, I think I'll consider a purchase in the near future.

Indeed it's a strange marketing. But at least it's not like the one for Splinter Cell: Conviction where they faked a robbery, scaring the shit out of the people being "robbed" and getting the police involved.

Memorable though.

OT: I think that's quite a neat way of advertising. Something a bit different.

Did anyone else see that MW3 poster @ the beggining?

That is some awesome work. Glad that nature cooperated and let them finish it.

Nope, just saw the Hitman and Tomb Raider billboards. Both of which I am more interested in than another generic shooter.

I'd laugh if some giant guy came and started kicking it and on his shirt was a "Nintendo" logo pin.

Do the escapist news team live under a rock stop acting like things are new ideas i remember sega doing a similar thing for sonic 3.

Can't wait for this game! Gonna be sooo good

The sculpture itself was amazing, the char they designed looked nothing like Nathan Drake though. Good bit of advertising, thought that kid was slightly creepy.

Now that makes my sandcastle with 1-foot high walls surrounding it look a lot less impressive...

Anyways, that's one of the most brilliant marketing stunts I've ever seen.
Note to self:
1 Go to Cannes
2 Make a distinctive sandcastle so everyone can see it
3 ???
4 PROFIT!

Ha, I kind of feel sorry for the MW3, Tomb Raider, and Hitman billboards. They're like "Dude, Drake, why you gotta be like that?" and he's stealing their thunder.

Sssssssssssssss!

wait just a minute there buddy, if i havnt bought the 2nd game i wouldve looked at this and thinks it looks worth a shot... dont let them fool you, i am just giving you some good advice. rather borrow or rent the game, even if its the first or second one, and find out for yourself how narrow one track the gameplay is. when you mentioned sandbox i nearly fell off my chair :) theres not even any proper weapon system or anything.

i know some people like this type of game (i have no problem with that) but there are too many people that wasted there money on not knowing exactly how the gameplay is. the reason why i even bothered to come and look at this article is probably because im still disapointed i bought the 2nd game after all this time and maybe help someone else to save there hard earned money :)

added - i did catch your sandbox joke though :)
