UPDATE: Nike Auctions Shoes from Back to the Future for Charity

Whoa! This is heavy. We might be able to step into Marty McFly's shoes before 2015.

Update Again: The first auctions - there will be 150 auctioned each day for a total of ten days - is now live with the highest bid currently for a pair of size 8 shoes earning more than $9,000. Thanks, Ranooth.

Update: Nike did in fact reveal the Air Mag tonight, but it's a lot less cooler than you think. The contoured grey shoe is a replica of the prop used in the movie, complete with light-up Nike branding, but the laces do not power tight, despite an international patent filed in April 2009 for such an innovation. No, Nike said that they will be auctioning off only 1500 of these sneakers on Ebay to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation's work on finding a cure for Parkinson's Disease. Of course, Fox played the role of Marty McFly in Back to the Future and now suffers from the malady that his Foundation is fighting. Nike will donate $50 million plus all of the proceeds from the auctions - which will actually be doubled from matching donations.

It all sounds like a great cause. But I kind of wish we were living in the future and this was the real deal being sold to real consumers. Oh well, some day I'll have my Hoverboard.

Original Post: Many of the fictional gadgets in movies and TV shows have since inspired real products like the cellphone acting like a communicator from Star Trek or a body-controlled interface from Minority Report showing up with Kinect. It's rare though that a future product lampooned in a movie gets released by the actual company it was meant to skewer - and four years earlier than predicted. Yet that seems to be the case for the Nike Air Mag, which according to reports may be revealed at a special event in Los Angeles tonight.

You might remember the Nike Air Mag from Back to the Future Part II. Marty McFly from 1985 is given a bunch of clothes from 2015 so that he can impersonate his teenaged son. In a trademark bright orange Nike box are light grey high top sneakers that automatically tighten when McFly puts his heel into the shoe. "Power laces! All right!" McFly exclaims.

Original scene from Back to the Future:

Today, a mysterious video popped up on YouTube posted by a user named "DocEmmettBrown88" called McFly's Closet that raised my eyebrows. The camera slowly dollys through a room full of Nike Air Mags with a theme from Back to the Future playing. Huh, that's weird, I thought.

But then I saw a post on sneaker enthusiast website NiceKicks.com about a surprise official announcement from Nike occurring tonight. Waiting for reporter Matt Halfhill in his hotel room was a black box containing metal glasses like what "Doc" Brown wore in Back to the Future II and a bunch of throwback candy and Pepsi. On top of the box was an iPod shuffle with Christopher Lloyd saying the following quote, "Welcome to Los Angeles. If my calculations are correct, over the next 24 hours you are about to see some serious shit!"

An invitation to the event reads: "It's about time! ... an unveiling that could change the course of time."

All signs point to Nike revealing the Air Mag tonight and the weird part is that the shoes are coming almost 4 years early. The future is so bright, I have to wear aluminum shades.

Now, if only Mattel could invent the Hoverboard ...

Oh my God, I want those shoes.

.....I'd get a pair.

I don't even care if I'll look like an absolute muppet with these on.
Obligatory image, of course.

Oh man, I have to get these. I want the glasses more, though. Florida sun ain't gonna dim itself!

Finally!!! Only took 22 years but yes they can charge whatever they want!

image

I need them now!!

GREAT SCOTT NIKE, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?!? If you're going to do what I think you're going to do then the consequences of that could be DISASTROUS!

I foresee two possibilities; One, people come face-to-face with the shoes putting everyone into shock where they'll simply pass out, or two, the encounter could create a time paradox, the results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum and DESTROY THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!

Granted, it's a worst case scenario, the destruction might be only localized merely to our own galaxy.

Holy shit.

We're living in the future.

EDIT: Aw... not as sweet as I thought :'(

Still though, we're living in the future.

You know, I'll bet they just look like the shoes from the film - and don't do the laces trick.

I wouldn't be so sure about that :P

Better description on that one, better diagram on this one:

WHUTWHUTWHUT!!! I want! Gimme, gimme! NAOW!

Some foreseeable problems:

1)Water. It rains, there's puddles, there's streams, there's other things. Converse Allstars hold up great after intact with water. Nikes, not so much. So a Nike shoe with electronics in it...waiting for the electrocution lawsuits to ensue.

2)Extra power consumption. In the video notice that all the shoes are on some sort of charger pad. How long do they last on a single charge? How much power does it drain?

Also, I don't see these shows as being environmentally friendly. Most shoes aren't, but unless these puppies come with their own extra solar charger, it's worse off than a normal show at the same price (whatever price that might be).

That will be the day. Unfortunately I can't get too excited about these shoes until I see that (1) they actually work and (2) they don't cost more than my first car.

Yeah, I would buy a pair. I think Nike would have a bonified hit on its hands with these.

Oh hells Yes

You are forgetting that these are made by Nike. Thats means they will only be the same price as your first car. Well or you could order them direct from the factory in china and get them for $200 less.

I don't care if these shoes have a "small" chance of over lacing and turning your feet in to pulp, I will own them.

The only thing that would be cooler than these shoes would be a hoverboard.

DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT

Okay, now where's my self-drying and fitting clothes?

I think it's a great thing that they are releasing those shoes. Even if they are gonna cost a lot of money.

Now let's wait for the jacket, the hoverboard and...

...A litmus hat.

Doesn't autolace. No deal.

Take my money. All of it.

In regards to the edit:

I assume that they will go for more than I can afford, oh well then.

Update:

Well, balls. Consider my enthusiasm curbed.

That is quite literally impossible.

Great cause, but good god are they ugly. Just like in the movie!

Now I've gotta watch Back to the Future part I and II again (I like III too, but it doesn't command me to rewatch it like the first two do).

it IS about time. but i'll wait another 4 years for the real thing

Waah those glasses are SWEEEEEEEEEEET!
Where do i bid for them?

... Those shoes look awful...

Just... Awful.

It's not about how they look, it's about the shoes from Back to the Future.
