Sony Adds PS2 Cult Classics to PSN

Oh...now I need more memory...and a bigger budget.

I still have and enjoy my PS2, but I'm glad to see Sony make a smart business decision and expand access to the fantastic games libraries its consoles have amassed over the years. I wish they were a little more confident/less stingy with their North American releases of older games, but it looks like they're gaining confidence with digital distribution.

Cool, I might have to check a few of these out. Only problem is I have become so short fused when it comes to these older games, I lose my interest so damn fast I rarely finish them. Just take Castlevania: Harmony of Despair for instance, I just can't seem to make myself keep playing it for some reason. I think it might have a lot to do with all the sweet games coming out in the next few months. Maybe during the lull later next year I'll get back into all these older games...

I have bought more PS1 games off of the PSN than actual PS3 games in the last two years.

Doesn't look like that's going to change.

So glad PS2 titles are finally coming to the PSN.

I'd like to play the Devil May Cry game so I hope they're included on the games they're added at some point

I knew they would start putting awesome ps2 titles on psn! Keep it up sony and be a bit liberal about who gets nominated to the psn store. Some people might actually be interested in a couple of old dynasty warriors games being available on the psn. Also Odin Sphere. Awesome.

Sony giveth (PS2 classics) and Sony taketh away (online paywall)

Lvl 64 Klutz:
I may be weeping tears of joy, but my wallet is weeping tears of dread.

on the other hand, how much do those cult-classics actually cost to buy the original release hard-copy?

God Hand I can find on ebay for around £20, and it is that prce because there is a relatively low demand. if everyone who would be interested in the liked og God hand actually sought to buy a copy you can see the price exploding like Twilight Princess for Gamecube that now costs £42 AT LEAST! I've seen mint condition copies go for £150, a standard edition game from 2006 going for £150!!!

I have my copy, damn glad I bought it when I did as the price has appreciated by about 20% every year since and frankly, even for £60 I ain't selling it. No way, Jose.

And this is in the crazy world where the Wii version costs only about £14.

On a more relevant level, I have a lot of positive to say about the PSOne classics on PSN, they have consistently been cheaper than buying them off ebay/similar (once factoring in delivery costs) and have the added benefit that I can play them on PSP. So Tomb Raider II on my daily commute... WHOPEEE!!!

I just want to see Silent Hill 2 on that list of games. I can't think of many other PS2 titles that I don't already own that I really want to play.

HUYI82:
i have over 300 ps2 games, why don't sony let me play them on the ps3 without me having to rebuy them again.

A million times this.

I'm loving how everyone on the thread is going "wow, how nice of Sony to charge us for this stuff!" Seriously guys, where's your self-respect as consumers? Releasing HD versions of games is all well and good but the price should be £10 or whatever, not close the the price of brand new game!

As for emulators, there is no conceivable reason that Sony should stop us from playing classic PS2 games on the PS3. Instead of selling us games we already own, they should be making an emulator to allow us to play our old stuff. Hell, I'd even pay for a download of the emulator, as it is an extra feature. While they're at it, they could even re-skin and "HD-ify" old games, and sell the files as downloads that would run on top of your original game, perhaps at a couple of quid a pop. Stuff like that I would happily pay for, but new money for old rope is bullshit.

At least now everyone can play God Hand, the game that proved that it's possible to have five million badly designed elements in a game and still have the result be a hilariously entertaining game.

I mean, come on. The RNG, the health system and annoying demon spawns? Who cares about that when I get to beat up Fidel Castro, Albert Wesker and Sagat in the most ridiculous ways imaginable, accompanied by cheesy dialogue?

Now all they need to do is make an HD collection of the TimeSplitters series, and I'll be indebted to Sony for the rest of my life.

Put The Red Star on, because I can't find my demo of it, and I really want to try it.

As far as Rare PS2 games go. I think that'd be so awesome.

well that's good for you guys but most of us never got to play these games or own them for that matter so the majority of the gaming community will be happy
except for a couple of you who I'm assuming are /v/irgins and so you hate vidya

Tell me, did anyone happened to hear Jak 2 among those games? No?

Then we still have a problem.

Orcboyphil:
Now just release the .Hack series and the Zone of the Enders games and I'll be happy.

edit: I might even buy a PS3 to play them on.

Kojima is actually making a zone of the enders collection along with a mgs collection

And I do hope Sony will release the kingdom hearts games on psn or at least come with a HD collection.

Compatible with Vita?

Please bring PS2 games to vita, some PS2 games would work very well being portable.

BoredRolePlayer:
I remember people complaining how some games didn't "play" right on some forums and you can't mention the word "modded" without getting banned.

I'm not the only one that sees the humor in saying "modded" and getting "modded" right?

Is that ironic? I dunno...it's really funny though.

I'm hoping Disgaea 1 and 2 come to the PSN :).

Does anyone know if Shadow of the Colosuss + Ico will get a PS store release like the God of War bundles did?

FUCK YEAH GODHAND.
Oh man how I loved that game.
And Odin Sphere is something I'm willing to check out.

Between you and me I think the Disgaea games are better on the PSP, what with the added stuff and the glitch in the first one to help with the grinding.

On one hand: hey, this is pretty damn cool.

On the other hand: This wouldn't even be news if the PS3 was backwards compatible with PS2 games.

Already own them.

I'm a big of a Nippon Ichi addict. Currently pounding through Disgaea 4, hoping to hit 9999 this weekend.

Then...reincarnate...and begin again. But I've got the lose-lose's and the statisticians so it should be fast.

Um, what? Sorry, all I got from the first reading of your post was "herd-de-derp-derp"...

OK, well from what I gather is your first "point", the PS2 had some of the best sales records in gaming history. There are millions of copies of PS2 games floating about the world today, all of which are unplayable on PS3. Do you think that people who already bought and paid for these games at full retail prices when they came out should expect to have to do so again for the privilege of playing something they've already paid for? I don't.

Secondly, you'll note that I said that re-releasing games was "all well and good". That means I have nothing against it. What I have a problem with is charging close to full retail price for a minor update of a very old game. If we can't play our originals, it's only fair that they don't charge out the ass for us to regain access...

...actually fuck it, it's not. If people never owned the game originally then fine, offer it to them at a reasonable price, but give those that already paid for it the emulator the fucking PS3 community have been asking for since the beginning!

Finally, the fact that you decided to bring my virginity into the discussion kinda implicates hypocrisy. And "vidya" isn't even a word.

Marshall Honorof:
\Panico did not detail prices for these titles,

Yes she did. The games will be $9.99 a game.

That's great, I always found that PS2 ban stupid. Could anyone recommend any of these games?

A Social Reject:
Compatible with Vita?

Probably. Its unclear at this point if the games are like the HD rereeases of things like RE4 and Beyond Good and Evil, or if its like the Ps1 classics. Either way, after the announcement of the MGS and ZOE cross compatability, it'd be likely they're compatable.

HUYI82:
i have over 300 ps2 games, why don't sony let me play them on the ps3 without me having to rebuy them again.

Because there's this amazing machine you can use to play those games. Its called the Ps2.

If you really want to play your Ps2 games so much, why not just play them on your Ps2? They aren't hard to find.

Cult Classics? I've had a PS2 for ages and I can quite safely say I have never heard of any of those games.

If anyone's on the fence about Odin Sphere, I think it's well worth checking out. I'm a 2D side-scroller fan, and it's definitely one of the most gorgeous ones I've ever played. It's also one of the hardest, so you should be prepared to sink some time into it.

Aeshi:

Hence why they are cult classics.

Count me in on the "Can I haz on Vita?" crowd. I really want the Vanillaware games, the only one I have is Muramasa on Wii. I prefer games on handhelds and don't have a PS3 yet, probably going to get a Vita over one if I get the chance.

Mr. Omega:
On one hand: hey, this is pretty damn cool.

On the other hand: This wouldn't even be news if the PS3 was backwards compatible with PS2 games.

Yes, it would. Allowing 5 cult classic games a new life by giving them a rerelease on a digital platform along with a promise to promote the shit out of them would still be news.

If what I'm reading about these things is true, and these aren't remastered, just straight ported Ps2 games, then they will be on Vita. Like the Minis and the Ps1 classics, the games should have cross compatability.

@HUYI82: .. you answered your own question. Bolded for clarity.

@Mandalore_15: Except its not an extra feature. It was an original selling point that got removed with only the flimsiest of justifications.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

So if they are selling PS2 titles on PSN can we finally say it? Sony removed PS2 functionality from PS3s not because of hardware/software limitations, but because the intention was to make people rebuy what they had already bought. With this there is now basically no chance that the stolen PS2 emulator (at least the software level) will never be restored. It was never about the hardware emulator being too expensive or the software emulator being insufficient. Its about money.

OutrageousEmu:

If you really want to play your Ps2 games so much, why not just play them on your Ps2? They aren't hard to find.

Except that PS2s themselves were not very durable and many of them broke over time, so theres not as many as one might think and for many people it would mean purchasing another PS2.

Also its important to recognize the difference of technology between then and now. Whereas many tvs are HDTV and many consoles are connected to HDTVs via HDMI ports, the PS2 is ran via antiquated RCA plugs that honestly really do a number on the A/V feed. So personally even buying a PS2 recently I would rather run a PS2 title through a PS3 than to run it through a PS2 simply because I would like to be able to see what the developers actually put there as opposed to over contrasted blurry images that represent what was originally put onto disc and hear the sounds without the added analog hum.

TL;DERP
It is what it always is, about money and how much more of yours Sony feels entitled to.
