New Dead Space 3 Rumors Keep Isaac Suffering

New Dead Space 3 Rumors Keep Isaac Suffering

image

More Dead Space 3 rumors have bubbled to the surface, including one rather big pseudo-spoiler about the state of Isaac Clarke's mental well-being.

One of the underpinnings of EA's Dead Space franchise is that Isaac Clarke, the game's hero, is a little nuts. He butchers Necromorphs with ease and flair, but he also suffers from dementia and occasionally sees dead people. Converses with them now and then, too. But in Dead Space 3, so the rumor goes, his situation will escalate even further.

What follows could be considered a spoiler, at least until EA starts promoting the hell out of it as a Big Interesting Feature, so consider yourself warned, and having been warned, stop reading here if you don't want to be spoiled. Still reading? Fine. Dead Space 3 begins with Isaac facing a choice: go to Tau Volantis [presumably not the galaxy's most pleasant place] and rescue a woman, or be busted by EarthGov for all his Martian shenanigans. EarthGov must really suck, because he elects to undertake the rescue mission, with one-eyed sexpot flygirl Ellie in tow.

But she's not the only passenger, and this is the spoiler-ish part. Also along for the ride is "Shadow Isaac," the snarky manifestation of his now-full-on split personality. Shadow Isaac apparently gets up in Real Isaac's grill at every opportunity, such as when he calls him an idiot after falling into a tunnel. Shadow Isaac will be visible as an on-screen character and the two Isaacs will banter throughout the game - if the delusional rantings of a severely psychologically traumatized schizophrenic can be described as "banter."

Siliconera doesn't cite its source and even if it had it would just be some variation on "a trusted insider," so take it for what it's worth: an entirely unsubstantiated rumor that just appeared out of nowhere. That said, the combination of Clarke's ongoing mental breakdown and an excuse to send him into some blood-soaked hellhole that's been overrun by horribly misshapen, vomit-spewing zombies sounds like a pretty plausible setup for a new Dead Space game. But at this point EA hasn't even confirmed that Dead Space 3 will actually be made, so for now all we can do is wait and watch.

Eh...Shadow Isaac sounds kinda lame to be honest. I thought he kind of got over it at the end of 2. To see him slip back into this again is a little disappointing that they couldn't have come up with something else. I understand that he isn't fully recovered, obviously, but this just seems meh. I'll reserve my judgement though, because them making him talk seemed to work out in the last one as far as I was concerned.

So its Clarence from penumbra?

Oh God, so we're going all Prince of Persia with a light and dark Isaac now? As long as he isn't the final boss.

I want the final boss to be Nicole (again! then again!) or possibly an actual fatual alien with the controls to the markers in it's head...

Sorry double post

What made you think he got over it? The cure he was promised in Dead Space 2 turned out to be a trick, nothing happened that would have cured him. I mean, sure he destroyed the beacon, but he destroyed the first beacon in Dead Space 1 and that sure as hell didn't cure him.

I like this idea for a storyline, but if EA ever decides to make one or more of the games in this series a delusion that he "wakes up" from as a twist I'll be SO pissed!

Im not sure the image of having zombies puke into your mouth until you dissolve from the inside out while being decapitated 24 ways is something you 'get over',
Hes not just gonna stand up, dust off his britches and go "SHUCKS! that was a trip."

Also, will taming your darkside qualify as 'The Binding of Shadow Isaac'?

Shadow Isaac sounds like an interesting concept. The only times it's really been done before is Penumbra (and only one of them was talking) and Prince of Persia: T2T. It would certainly be more effective than Zombie Nicole, who nobody really liked even when she was alive.

They could begin with Shadow Isaac as a bit of a joker who makes fun of Isaac every so often, eventually becoming sarcastic and cynical, and developing it so that by the end of the game he's an evil character that's been trying to make Isaac feel guilty or even kill himself. Maybe they could borrow an idea from Penumbra by making Isaac hallucinate and kill an ally (if Penumbra fans are OK with that).

Its possible they will do something interesting with it but really I think a better step is to just abandon Isaac as a main char and have his insane rantings prove the fuel for someone else to go on a mission to do whatever with whatever.

With the way that the second one ended I was thinking that Issac's time as the main character was finished.

So they've just dropped the pretence of 'horror' then? Good. It wasn't fucking scary.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns into some sort of co-op like F.3.A.R. had.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be Co-Op, either. I will get the game, as I like the franchise. I only hope (Much in vain) that the PC version of the game will be given far more attention than it previously did. What with broken multiplayer and plenty of other things being wrong with Dead Space 2. I realize the multiplayer wasn't great, but I thought it was fun, the little time I got to play it and didn't disconnect from issues that were promised to be resolved but never did... *Sadface*

Hopefully this will do what F3AR should have done and made you question if it's your character who's delusional or if this might be something else entirely (ie the Markers either disguising a necromorph, using a sort of astral projection, or actually becoming alive after a unification). Hell, this would be one of the times where the strange person being visible to others might actually be freakier than them not.

It actually sounds like a good idea, at least by EA standards. Isaac has allways been a bit bland so fleshing him out with a few more personal flaws might make him more of a character.

Worgen:

Considering it took two games for Issac to start having any actually character much less development I'd rather them not start at square one.

Doesnt sound too appealing to be honest, the whole shadow Isaac mechanic sounds more like interuptions to the more enjoyable dismembering of Necros... kind of like 'I wanna shoot stuffz, nooo you will get to listen to your character talk to himself for a bit instead '.

I prefer the silent protaganist approach and view too much 'banter' as disruptions to the ebb and flow of a game, additionally in DS 2 you cant even relax and enjoy the cutscenes as often it would include a sudden quick time event... that annoyance lead to many a spilt drop of coffee when taking a hasty sip of the brew during cutscenes only to have the game demand you mash your E key NOWWWWW!...

... so more cutscenes would probably mean more QTE horror.

Co-op with one eyeball lady ala Resident Evil 5 sounds awesome to me... I'd quite like to see a co-op Dead Space! DO EET!

Exactly this. After following a storyline for so long, if it just suddenly was like, too much cheese before bed I'll be uber annoyed.

I mean its not like a movie where you've put maybe 2 hours of your life into it.

I like the idea, to a certain degree, it depends on actually how it works. I mean, if he's constantly going to be there it'll be like Wilson or Fight Club. And Wilson is hilarious. Or a little bit like Afro Samurai...

Actually there were more references like this than I thought. If it's used in a way that's designed to totally freak you out, or anger you or at least invoke something else other than humour or annoyance, I'm all for it.

Spoilers. The franchise didn't end at 2, that'd be like Resident Evil ending at 2 (there's a difference between not being able to move beyond it without running back into it's arms like an irrationally fogiving lover, and actually finishing). Maybe Issac as the protagonist could be done with, but there's still the original White Marker on Earth, the one that's not malfunctioning or flawed (not yet, anywyas), and may have given birth to either the human race, or life as a whole on Earth. The red and black markers were human-made replicas of that original Marker.

A Dead Space 3 would be so epic. 3rd times the charm. Both Dead Space games were scary as hell, pretty hard at times and fun! I'd say Dead Space was more scary than Dead Space 2. Dead Space 2 wasnt as scary just because I had already played it's predecessor, (doesn't mean it wasn't scary as shit.) I like the idea of Isaac having to choose between dealing w/Earth Gov, or going to a planet in complete white out blizzards on a rescue mission. I also like the idea of Isaac's split personality issue. As long as it don't make actual Isaac more talkative than he should be. If the "Shadow Isaac" appears during really dangerous moments or right before, (like while trying to fend of NecroManiacs,) than im all for it! Just make the game a little longer & way more difficult & i'll be scared more than shit & happier from it! ^^
But to make Dead Space 3 more of a success is to not make it all about a rescue mission, (of course.) He wasn't just given that option so if he completes it he can be free to live w/his problems. Earth Gov has far more things in mind. Whether or not Dead Space 3 is a success. I'll still want "at least" two more sequels with Isaac as the main character. I can't wait for Dead Space 3 & it's already giving me chills & nightmares, (that's a good thing lol.) The Dead Space's are part of my favorite games all time. Don't up the action, or dumb down the scary shit. It's perfect. Just like I said make it longer & more difficult to beat.

While there is alot of potential in that idea the Dead Space guys were never good on character, so this may go horribly wrong.

Ok the whole shadow clarke sounds amazing, rescuing a girl sounds fake from the start. They will probably open up the game with clarke under arrest in either earth gov's head quarters somewhere or on board one of their interrogation ships.

Not going to lie the shadow clarke thing sounds really cool. I'm interested to see if they actually put it in the game.
