The New XIII: It's Not What You Think

The first XIII: Lost Identity screens have been unveiled, leading shooter fans around the world to ask, "What the hell is this?"

Shooter fans may recall XIII as an unusual, flawed but still very cool cel-shaded FPS released by Ubisoft back in 2003. Not only did it sport a unique visual style, it also featured the voice talents of David Duchovny [who sounded bored to tears by the whole thing] in the lead. It was a lot of fun but apparently not successful enough to warrant a sequel - until a few days ago, that is, when French developer Anuman Interactive announced XIII: Lost Identity.

But wait. What... what is this? The screen shots released today do feature a guy who looks very much like XIII, but the screens themselves don't seem quite right somehow. They look very... casual adventure-y? I think I even see a hidden object scene in there. Hidden objects? In my XIII game? Apparently it's more likely than I think.

Not that this is a total surprise. Ubisoft's XIII was based on a Belgian comic book of the same name that came out in the mid-80s, after all, so there's nothing saying that a different game based on the same IP will necessarily be a shooter. It's sort of a reverse Syndicate; it began life as an FPS and then was turned into a... well, a hidden object game. Not quite the same thing after all, I suppose.

XIII: Lost Identity is slated for release in November for the PC, Mac and iOS, which probably should have been our first clue.

I have XIII its pretty fun, this looks.
um
Different?

Wow. That's kind of lame.

Good, I'll add this one to my "Don't even bother looking up anything more about this pile of crap, go back to oggling SotS2 and Skyrim." list.

i used to play XIII a lot, i just liked the cartoon style :D and it was pretty fun too, sure the stealth parts took me a while but i still enjoyed it. but this looks nothing even close to it o_O

WHAT. THE. HELL?

I was totally pumped for this game. I cracked out my copy of XIII and started to replay it, having a throughly good time!

Then I see this.

Seriously? That's one hell of a genre change. This isn't even going to attract the same sort of audience that played the original XIII. You know, those people who wanted a thrilling sequel to a game that ended in a rather large cliffhanger.

But no. We get this. THIS! And I actually LIKE adventure games like this.

*Walks off muttering angrily to self.*

Oh come on now people you can't all be that young, this is clearly a puzzly adventure game.

Well, that's a pretty big letdown. Was looking forward to more crossbow-power.

Well, fuck.
That's a shame.

Weird. Looks like a point-and-click adventure game to me.

I like how appropriate the title is, "Lost Identity". Why it sure looks like this game's lost its identity, doesn't it?

Another franchise screwed.

Are they intentionally doing this?! Do they really think it's going to sell better because of the name?

This is the first time in my memory that the sub-title of the game reflects the game itself as opposed to the plot. It looks more like a seek-and-find, point-and-poke kind of puzzle game now. The iPad is capable of FPS games so why turn a shooter into...whatever the hell that is?

Well, I think I can safely say that this looks pretty shit.

wut?...WUT?!??! I had really REALLY high expectations for this game, hell an HD remake would have been enough... but this... this is BLASPHEMY!!!

Why would someone with a Myst picture, crap on an adventure game based on first glance?

And I think you need more than just one mildly decent game, that played like cell shaded counter-strike, to have a franchise on your hands.

Not too fussed really, the first one was alright but its old now, and I barely have much memory of the mechanics or how it ended. and I don't have the game anymore to give it another playthrough. So I'm quite happy skipping this and focusing on all the other much better releases coming out in the next few months.

Wow, I'm very surprised how IPs are used. First classics are turned into shooters and once you decide to do a follow-up to a shooter it becomes a casual puzzler???

If this is the new trend I REALLY hope there will be no continuation of my favourite games from the 90s!

Great. They've taken a great comic-based FPS about shooting baldies and warped it into a comic-based Clandesinty... If Piranha Games blindsides us all and does something similar to this with their MechWarrior reboot, 2012 may as well end the world...

Not to say Clandestiny was bad--it's hard to beat rescuing your girlfriend in a haunted Scottish castle...

Takes a quick look at the screenshots"

Oh so it's a pint and click adventure game, well i like that kind of games so this isint really a problem.

hidden object game.

Well fuck.

Couldn't they have just dropped the XIII? There is literally no need to associate this with the original XIII.

Ah but then it doesn't have brand recognition and in a publisher's eyes, no brand recognition = no sales. People don't like to buy things that are new. Everyone knows that!

OT: I never played XIII but even I can see how this just comes across as a big middle finger to the game's original audience and fan-base.

And how do they think this would work?

10 years from now on we'll start seeing CoD puzzle games and Battlefield turn based RPGs. Meanwhile, FPS versions of FarmVille and chess will sell like hot bread.

isn't XIII supposed to be a shooter?

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!

When I first saw the thread title I was scared it was going to be in reference to that Final Fantasy game that took over 5 hours to introduce the plot.

I wish I'd have put money on this. Everyone looks to make shooters, unless its a shooter with some semblance of character, at which point its turned into a casual game.

#logic

But anyway, I'm serious Escapist, hire me for £30 a week, forget quoting Michael Pachter because he's useless, and I'll predict this sort of stuff for you.

No, no, you're doing it wrong! Everyone likes shooters and only shooters nowadays, so you take old franchises and turn them into shooters. Not the other way around!

Is it just me, or did the green one with the map of North and South America make me think DEFCON!

It may be a fine game in it's own right but... well, bugger.

the old XIII was one of the last great arena bot-deathmatch games. And no regenerating health in sight! I still fire up that one trailer every now and then to listen to that groovy as hell music:

Wish I could get that music all on it's own...

Thats weird... unlick XCOM and Syndicate, XIII went in reverse.

Too bad american developers can't think outside the box like this....

XIII was amazing, not so sure about those screen pic's though!

Developers are releasing old franchises reboots as FPS and everyones like "wah wah, Comercial Shooters. Wut happend to my gameplay. Why people sell out and make CoD and Halo clones. wah, wah!" Now the opposite has happened and you lot are complaining with the same passion. Make your minds up!
