Hackers Hit Steam Forums

image

The Steam user forums were hacked last night.

Wondering what happened to the Steam user forums? They were reportedly hacked last night by someone claiming to be from cheating/hacking site Fkn0wned.com. Text was inserted into the Steam forum header and other places advising users to check out the site for undetectable cheats, as well as hacking tutorials and tools, porn and the rest of the usual. Valve reacted quickly to the incident, taking the forums offline completely, where they remain as of this writing.

But in a fun twist, Fkn0wned denied that it had anything to do with the mess and actually ended up taking its own forum down for awhile following the Steam blowup, although they've since been restored. "Fkn0wned Forum is currently unavailable In lights of someone crediting us for the recent breaches of steam forums, the board is offline," a message posted on the site said. "Fkn0wned is not responsible."

Valve hasn't said anything about the matter yet, which optimists might take as a sign that there's nothing to worry about; but Sony took awhile to speak up about the PlayStation Network breach too and we all know how that worked out. I'm not suggesting that this is anywhere near the scope of that, but a change of password might be in order anyway.

Here we go again, I hate hackers :(

Hackers gonna hack!

Sounds like some butthurt basement dweller wanted to take revenge on Fkn0wned's admins.

Steam has a forum?

well luckily the steam forum accounts are different from the steam accounts. So hopefully we should be safe.

Anonymous hackers fucked up the STEAM forums?

What asshats. Never heard of Fkn0wned before. They are getting some free adverts out this tho.

Hackers should be targeting other countries, unless there is something wrong with America, Oh wait there is! Attack the 1% :)

Or continue with naive unbias journalism to entertain the unaware ants.

Why wouldn't they take credit for this?
*notices the angry mob of pitchfork welding Steam users*
Oh, right.

In honor of SPUF.

Steam forums down? Soldier update confirmed!

Indeed, but remember not all "Hackers" are these people hell bent on causeing problems online. Some actually do some awesome things with technology.

I know it's wrong what they did but it could of been worse.

Ha, Ha! Exactly this. I never go on Steam forums, not even for troubleshooting and support. Their choice of blackish gray background annoys the hell out of my eyes. Good thing I didn't give Steam my credit card info since I purchase via PayPal.

EDIT:
Hmm, I guess the steam forum accounts and the Steam accounts are different.
At least I think it is...
If so, I have nothing to worry about!

Still, that sucks. Hope no information was stolen or anything like that.

I can't imagine this doesn't lead to more. One hacker exploits a chink in the armor and more will come to pick at it.

You know what they say, any publicity is good publicity, whoever did this thrust the forum (which I've never heard of before) into the limelight, I wouldn't be surprised if the benefits of that attention out-weight any departures from outraged Steam fans.

Yeah I know I should say I hate hackers who use their skills for malicious purposes.

I've never ventured onto the Steam forums so my reaction is 'meh'.

Eh I posted on that maybe once over a year ago, and my credit crad on my account is no longer valid, Yay for not buying anything off stea m in a year!

Good thing I dont even have a Steam forums account then.

(Or can you use your main account with all the games for the forums to? I have no idea.)

does that make this the fourth (officially 3rd) hack this year of gaming companies (twice for PSN and unofficially XBL)?

It should be noted that unless you're a complete dolt, your Steam account and your Steam forum account is not the same thing.

My only question is if the Steam account is automatically tied to the Steam forums? *Answered

As for the rest it's probably better to wait for more information before jumping to conclusions.

Not really worried, forums getting hacked is one thing, accounts getting hacked completely another.

The the accounts on the Steam forums and the digital distribution platform Steam aren't the same, it doesn't matter for Steam whether the hackers got the passwords on the forums or not.

OT: I was already wondering why I couldn't access the forums today. Maybe it's time to change from vBulletin.

No, they're two separate accounts.

Both are separate. Need to sign up separately for the forums so it's not tied to your main Steam account.

No, but 99% would use the same name/password.

OT: Well that's a bitch. I wouldn't worry though. Unlike Sony, I'm sure Valve knows what they're doing.

Alright, if it's true that they aren't responsible, who is their sort of rival? Anyone against them could hack it, and try to blame them.

OT: Crap. Well, I used a different password there.

Now I'm glad I don't use the forums.

I dunno, that seems like a pretty obvious lack of security, I'd hope more than 99% aren't that naive.

Damn-near everyone uses one password for everything. Plus, is it really much of a stretch for people to use their Steam name/password for the Steam forums?

well that guy didnt read the forum rules xD

spy sapping my forums!

yes this whole hacking business isnt funny anymore -_-

Of course not, but if I just look at it from my point of view, Steam is one of very few accounts that have a CC attached to it, and while Steam has excellent security I'm sure the forums don't. I'd hope that most at least have 2 passwords, and it would make sense to separate those for sites connected to each other. It's very possible more than 90% would do it, but I hope it's not 99.

^ This made me lols.

Anywho, I don't get why hackers hack stuff like this. I mean honestly, what would you gain from hacking steam's forums? I guess some people have a just lil' to much spare time on their hands :P
