Fallout: New Vegas Bonus Book All Roads Goes Digital

A digital version of All Roads, the graphic novel included with the collector's edition of Fallout: New Vegas, is now available to everyone.

The Fallout: New Vegas collector's edition was an awesome thing, not least because it included All Roads, a graphic novel detailing the events leading up to the start of the game. Written by Fallout: New Vegas Senior Designer Chris Avellone, it set things off on the right foot by giving players more to go on than the tired old "you wake up with amnesia" trope. None of it was necessary to enjoy the action but it all made a little more sense with the novel providing context, and it also went a long way toward making certain characters - one in particular - more three-dimensional and sympathetic.

If you missed out on that part of the experience, here's a chance to catch up. A digital version of All Roads is now available through either Dark Horse Digital or the Dark Horse Comics iTunes App for $2.99, which is not a bad deal considering that it's less than what you'd pay for a dead tree version of a regular-edition comic.

If you've already played and finished New Vegas you're probably not going to get much out of this but if you're just leaping into it, I'd definitely call it three bucks well spent. It's fun making connections between the book and the game with moments and locations that would otherwise be complete throwaways. It won't mean much if you're just in it to shoot up geckos and wastelanders, but if you enjoy digging deeper into the story, All Roads is a great place to start.

Can someone fill me in on how long or big this thing is? Is it a 4 page thing or something else?

Also, since when are comics called books?

Anyhow, I dont really like comics but I might consider a purchase. Hell, its 3 bucks and related to New Vegas, why the fuck not?

Is there anything in there that isn't explained during the course of the game? I plan on buying the Ultimate Edition when it comes out. I hope that's not the case, though, since I like my games self-contained if possible.

Also, I agree with comment 2): What kind of extent in terms of pages are we talking about here? Because I have read videogame tie-ins before, often pitifully short ones.

It's only a comic; it'll probably only take you about 10 minutes, tops. Still, it's fun to match up locations in the game with those in the book.

The printed edition is 48 pages, 8x10-ish - similar physical dimensions to a standard comic. Fairly substantial, in other words, not one of those things that looks more akin to a cd insert than a "book."

There's really nothing in the game that goes unexplained if you don't read the comic. What it does is provide background, depth and motivation, and add some resonance to a few in-game locations. It's all supporting material and entirely unnecessary, but if you're a "full story" fan, it's definitely a worthwhile addition.

If it seems like I'm being a bit vague about the whole thing, I'm just trying to avoid dropping any spoilers. But I found that my attitude toward at least one of the game's central characters was pretty heavily influenced by the background provided by the comic.

Nothing in there is explained during the game, it actually makes some encounters and some locations alot more interesting when you play the game afterwards.

It's a pretty neat little book. I'd definitely like to see Avellone do some more comics work based on this.
