Modern Warfare 3 Bans Depend on "Douchiness of the Offense"

According to its creative strategist, Infinity Ward is tailoring MW3 bans to suit all kinds of misbehavior.

This week hasn't been a great one for equitable bans so far. Now, in an incidental attempt to remind us of the value of even-handed justice, Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling has revealed the nature of the ban-scale used by his studio's security teams.

"Every ban [is] unique to the level of douchiness of the offense," he said on Twitter. "The greater the douche the greater the length [of the ban]. PermaDouche possible."

"Any attempt to cheat, hack or glitch in MW3 will not be tolerated," he continued. This hard stance against cheating covers all platforms, with Bowling claiming that his team has issued "1600+" ban notices since the game went live, using information sent to them by concerned, probably non-cheating players using MW3's report system.

For general illumination, players can report others via the game lobby, where the option to report someone should appear if you click their username. This report is then sent directly to Infinity Ward's security team, who try to properly verify the claim before issuing the ban. "We verify reports with in-game stats, in-game video recordings, and other data to verify you were cheating," added Bowling.

None of this should come as a surprise; it was Bowling himself, after all, who announced the plans for MW3's dedicated anti-cheat teams back in September. Still, it is pleasing to see that Infinity Ward's security has both a mostly-balanced reports system and a tailored ban-severity scale. Take that, guy-who-kept-shooting-me-from-beneath-the-scenery! Justice. Oh, sweet justice.

So, why are there still people running around with Xbox buttons in their clan tag?

They can't ban everyone at once, i think a complaint has to be made or a MOD has to see it.

OT: Good news, at least this COD is actually been monitored better than the others...

I feel so sorry for COD4...Used to be such a good game =\

Because saying so means they'll do it. Promises are literally never broken. (Ask West and Zampella)

I have no faith they'll do any better monitoring this game than the last two.

Still is if you have it on a computer.
We not only have mods for our dedicated servers but also can set our own rules... like no marty >.>

---------------------

Good for everyone.
As we on computers can now have dedicated servers again (but no experience gained, but everything unlocked >.>) this won't affect me much but, good for everyone else.

I'll assume that racism can now actually get someone banned, which is good.

There really was little to no attempt to police the community with MW2. They just tried to patch as many exploits as possible and while I heard that people were banned for joining Prestige 10 servers I still saw lots of people get away with it.

If they're trying to make a good faith effort to improve user experience, then even if they fail it's still a step in the right direction.

This is why I play tf2 and only tf2 No hackers no problems also it's the best fps ever. And ya know Valve is awesome. And frequent updates. And a mostly great community, getting some idiots due to f2p but you just kill them and they rage like the 2 year old scum they are. No higher power needed to cast their devine opinion on people especially when it's the dev's fault.

Azo Galvat:

Those aren't hacks/mods. They were purposely added in the game because you can just enter a certain few characters and you will get those buttons. You don't have to hack it in, anyone can do it. Anyone.

That's why I believe it's not going to get patched and people aren't going to be banned for that. And that pisses me off.

The only problem I see is people have different opinions of what is right and wrong, also how bad something is. Also, a PermaBan for something they paid full price for will surely lead to trouble.

How can you have an "opinion" on what is cheating? ARE YOU CHEATING? Then it's wrong, and you should be permanently banned.

What pisses me off are temporary bans. What exactly does that accomplish? In a week the guy is back online cheating again. Bans should be permanent for ANY sort of cheats, hacks, or obviously abusing glitches (getting under the map, etc.). Anything short of a permanent ban simply does no good.

If you didn't want to get banned, you wouldn't have been cheating. You paid $60 and got banned in first 2 weeks? Too damn bad. Next CoD game, maybe you won't be such a douche.

i have never seen why there is so much grief over martydom, all you have to do is not run over their dead body like an idiot for a couple seconds, and that perk is utterly useless. Sure if it was the only problem with the game, then it might be a valid complaint, but juggernaut whores generally are at a greater advantage than martydom users are, as are plenty of other complaints.

(i was thinking of getting cod4 for the pc..but if that's what people grief over than meh i'll pass..)

OT: good that they are "saying" they are doing this, only time will tell if they keep to it and keep banning people for fairly logical concerns.

His name's Robert Bowling, not Robin Bowling.

OT: Well, as long as this doesn't affect my gameplay, it's fine by me.

If you're cheating or hacking or whatever in the game itself, you deserve to be banned from that game, $60 or no. It's not like they're banning you from every single one of their games because you misbehaved on a forum, right EA? They're banning you from the one game where you were blatantly breaking the rules. Perfectly fair.

Sounds like all the Second Chance whining in Black Ops. Oh noez, so hard to take note if you didn't get the proper notifications and points for a kill and keep shooting if you didn't. Second Chance was an utterly useless perk if you took a single extra second to PAY ATTENTION.

Any time. It was an easy mistake to make. I've made plenty worse in the heat of battle myself.

The game's a lot more fast paced on the PC, by miles. Stuff like Martyrdom, which causes people to avoid moving around rapidly, causes irritation because it causes slower-paced gameplay. People find campers irritating and Martyrdom causes camping. Not just that, but on a 24/32 player server there are enough grenades going around without even more falling out of someone's arse when they die.

I second this post. Except for the BF3 bit... I don't have BF3 due to EA's douchness about promoting it's products (The highest reading of douchness came from "Sin to Win")

OT: Nice to see that IW has the balls to punish according to the reading on the douch-o-meter

fair enough, with lots more people and the truth on faster gameplay, i could see it being slight more annoying, just saying grenades were the least of my griefing when it was the perfect counter to shotgun/knife whores who corner camped (which is the main reason why i used it, it was oh so sweet victory to get them after they corner camp killed me.)

i didn't really care for black ops so for the brief 3-4 weeks i played second chance really didn't bug me at all, plus headshots tend to make that useless...

Temporary bans seem fine for things like abusing glitches that the team obviously plans to patch now that they've discovered them. If it's even worth banning for at all. Obviously somebody has to do it before the dev team can find out about the glitch. And depending on the glitch in question, it can sometimes be fun if people don't take it too seriously.*

For example, there's this one time Team Fortress 2 got a bug that let engineers build infinite turret guns. Sounds terrible, right? Especially on maps where one team is attacking and the other is defending, where you'd think the defenders would have an easy win. But on the one server I was a regular on, the mods decided to just let people do it, and we discovered that it's not very effective at all. If they were clustered around a single area, all it took was one ubercharge (invulnerability buff deployed by a medic) to take them all out at once, and if they were scattered all over, having all those sentries to look after made them easy targets for spies (who can disable and eventually destroy unattended turrets without triggering them).

Anyway, the bug was fixed by the next day, and I still suspect it was secretly done on purpose to stress-test the game against the huge influx of engineers it would end up getting when the Engineer Update came out a week or so later.

*Not that I expect the average Call of Duty player to be able to not take the game too seriously.

This one approves.

Dealing with cheating in a decent manner...
Dedicated servers for PC users
Loads using Steam

And yet this game could dispense handjobs, and the elitists will hate it because it's popular.

I've been playing this pretty heavily the past week and quite frankly I don't get the appeal of this game. Most of the time I'm playing it, I watch other guy's kill cams and I see people who are not even aiming at me killing me. Or people shooting me through concrete blocks killing me. Or whatever. This auto-aim stuff is bullshit quite frankly. We're not playing against PCs, why is there aim-assist? "sorta hit but not really" is not good enough.

Then just now I'm playing and there's some big smoke grenade cloud and I can't see into it but someone shoots from inside of it and on his kill cam there's no smoke whatsoever. What the fuck is that? Seriously? Smoke grenades that only affect some people but not others? I assume it's some shit where grenade affects the thrower and the opposite team but no one else on his team but that quite frankly is fricken retarded.

Overall I don't see the widespread appeal of this game. People die in 2-3 bullets it seems, and most of the time it's a case of who sees who first. Or who's aiming and who's not. Or who has the quickdraw perk and who doesn't.

It's pretty tiresome.

gmaverick019:

Considering getting it for PC...
Yeah if you like getting raped sure :P

If your familiar with mouse firing then go ahead, but be warned, the people who still play it are fucking l33t >.> I am able to get into top 3 on my team normally. Otherwise its pretty fucking sweet with matches lasting for an hour... instead of 5 mins then a server change, that doesn't connect.

Also, the reason marty is moaned about is that on PC is its the only issue, last stand requires you to keep firing to make sure they're dead and is usless and juggernaut whores... personally I've never had a "problem" with them... dunno, maybe its because we can aim :s Tiny bit more health, so what, they still die pretty much exactly the same.
If you have COD4 then you'll know the effective range of lethal grenade blasts is severely high and martydom suddenly becomes at lot more useful on servers with 64 people... which exist...
One in particular is dedicated to the map Killhouse which is tiny, and if you stay still or back up... you die, you need to camp or charge xD

nuke them from orbit! but err I haven't touched the online multiplayer in MW3 so I can't say I've had any issues with it. maybe if I buy the game I'll actually worry about it, but it's pretty sad that CoD4 is pretty much a goner now :/

I would agree with you except over the glitches part, some glitches are hilarious and when every in the game is using it, it stops being an unfair advantage no? It was like an unspoken agreement between everyone in the lobby "this glitch is damn awesome and we will abuse the hell out of it until it gets patched"

The glitch i'm talking about? The unlimited emergency airdrop glitch in MW2. Both teams, unlimited firepower...

I swear that game was so awesomely broken it actually make Black Ops feel really dull on release through no fault of it's own. It was like "wow so they took the spam AC-130 rockets out? How boring"

Oh and remember the glitch in World at War that let you float in the air? We had half the people in the game doing that and it was like an aeroplane battle minus the planes

Well at least they are trying to get rid of what is now plaguing, cod4, World at war and MW2 ... well they will until treyarch releases there game and everybody except hackers moves over.

I like the notion that they'd ban people for acting like douches. If that were true, I think the CoD server population would be reduced by at least a third.

teabaggers never learn, and hate getting punished for being douchebags.

"Any attempt to cheat, hack or glitch in MW3 will not be tolerated,"

See, I have an issue with this. Now banning hackers is pretty straight forward, although I'd argue there should be "unsafe" servers as option (like VAC-disabled servers in Valve games). Admittedly though, not a big issue.

The problem starts when you reference "cheating and glitching". First of all, what is cheating? Oddly undefined term. Off the top of my head the only real cheating I can think of is hacking, but that's already covered in "hacking". "Cheating" seems like a wildly undefined term. Some people consider "quickscoping" cheating, others consider it legit. So IW reserves the right to decide which tactics are "allowed"? And glitching? While I agree that exploiting many glitches is hardly good sportsmanship, the existence of glitches is to be blamed on the developers, not the players that use it. Sure, you can say it's "unsportsmanlike" or "annoying", but the player has no reason to be "sportsman" or play by whatever arbitrary and personal set of rules you consider to be "not annoying". Sure, some glitches are game breaking... But others are hardly even worth doing, and others can be ambiguous at best...

I'm reminded of David Sirlin's excellent "Play to Win". Admittedly, I don't play MW3 so there may some legitimacy to this I'm overlooking, but it seems like an attempt to "legislate" how one can play the game by introducing arbitrary rules that don't actually exist in the game.

Is it too much for ask for the developer to do a rigorous job of making it impossible to cheat?

As it should be. It's good to hear that they are at leasttrying to police the community this time around. It's the least they can do considering how much money they've made off the game.
