Platinum Games Defends its Involvement in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

A lot of fans are questioning whether Platinum Games can pull off a Metal Gear game, but executive producer Atsushi Inaba reckons he's got this.

What we've seen of the now un-cancelled Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengeance is undeniably impressive, but it's not very, well ... Metal Gear-like is it? The wailing guitar, the complete lack of stealth, the title which makes editors weep tears of blood, the part where former-mope-o-tron Raiden chucks a Metal Gear Ray into the air like it's made of styrofoam, it all seems more in line with the over-the-top action of Bayonetta than the more measured gameplay of the Metal Gear series.

"It seems there are some who wish to imply PlatinumGames was able to achieve what Kojima Productions could not -- interviewers among them," tweeted Inaba. "This notion is spurious. Clearly, we have not yet produced any results in the world of Metal Gear."

"I know reaction to the new trailer is mixed. Yet I also believe our love and respect shines through," he added.

Platinum's pedigree as an action developer isn't in doubt. The company was founded by key members of the now, sadly defunct, Clover Studio, the developer of Okami, Viewtiful Joe and, of course, God Hand, and their efforts as Platinum Games haven't been all that shabby either. That being said, Inaba admitted that changing the development team mid-production was a huge risk.

"The gap is immense. Mr. Kojima tossed his chips on our table, believing we could handle the task. In other words, he took a gamble."

It's an incredibly bold move, there's no denying that, and it should be interesting to see how it plays out in the long run. I was unsure at first, but I think it's nice to see Kojima Productions handing over the reigns and saying "Here, see what you can do."

It's just wierd that it takes place after MGS4... Raiden got with his family, everything was solved. The big bad was defeated...

Not my cup of tea. At all. To be honest, it looks bloody horrendous. Silly cartoon physics, hyperactive action without any actual impact, and hilarious attempts at "badass" characterization. And who came up with that title? AND, why did the developers feel the need to point out that "Revenge + Vengeance = Revengeance" several times? Do they think I'm stupid? I am, but it's rude of them to assume so.

Thanks for sparing me the agony of anticipation, though.

Still looking forward to it. Its not an MGS series game and I hope it plays nothing like one either. Judging from the trailer, my hopes are in good faith.

There are many words to describe what these people have done to Metal Gear. "Love" and "respect are not two of them.

Also, FYI, revengeance is a real word.

Wait.
Are you telling me that revengeance is the actual subtitle for the game!? I thought that was just for the trailer, but they're actually THAT FUCKING STUPID!?

Argh, I really hope that's just a translation problem...

Anyway, Spoony, would you do the honors?:

I might be over-reacting, though I don't think I am. They had better start explaining just how the hell this makes any sense with the end of MGS4.
I will be watching this train-wreck, as much as it's gonna hurt.

Or...Was he? *dun dun dun*

Anyway, wasn't the shift done before Platinum took over? I don't know, maybe I followed the sequence of events wrong, but I didn't think that was a Platinum thing.

According to dictionary.reference.com, it is an obsolete word that means revenge or vengeance. It is not in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. This leads me to conclude that the fact that 'revengeance' is an actual word (albeit debatably so) is entirely coincidental. Especially so considering the trailer.

I watched it again for this comment. It makes me sad that people were paid to write and direct it.

OK, I never liked the original games that much after the first one, although some of the concepts/settings and the gameplay was OK.

But as has been said before, Hideo Kojima neverh ad a fucking clue how to merge gameplay and story and he also didn't have a fucking clue how to keep a story concise and engaging, packing 50% of the overlong cutscenes with redundant dialogue that made the already self-important pretentiousness of each drawn-out scene damn near unbearable.

And now we have this, which sits right at the other end of the spectrum, throwing all the thematic elements, lengthy, self-absorbed plots and subdued, tense gameplay out the fucking window and replacing it with the kind of thing that Devil May Cry used to do before they made Dante look different and therefre ruined all the gameplay forever (apparently).

Count me in. This bears more resemblance to Metal Wolf Chaos than it does to Metal Gear, so I'm going to look upon this as the original franchise as depicted in the imagination of a hyperactive 12 year-old. That way we'll all at least get some laughs out of it. I mean, Revengeance. They're not even trying to be like the old franchise. Good for them, I guess.

And who knows, maybe it'll be fun. Meanwhile, my wish to see a Metal Gear Solid game with the same potential capitalised on by a modicum of energy and pacing made by a development team that knows that games should be interactive will go unanswered.

To me all this effort was wasted on another Metal Gear. This would be WAY, WAY more accepted if it was all towards ZOE3. Which is what everybody been waiting for, not another MG lampoon game.

I'm game for this.
It looks great.
Its being made by a great developer.
Its story is still being handled by Kojima Productions.
I can't wait.

By the way, Raiden wasn't anywhere near as whiny or lame as people seem to remember. He just wasn't as cool as Snake. Which was kind of the point.

No need to defend yourselves to me, Platinum. I'm stoked for this game. Bayonetta was my favorite game of 2010, and the old DMC games are some of my favorites of all time. I expect to walk away with a fantastic action game.

I don't mind.

Personally, I wish Kojima would stop working on Metal Gear games. After 4, it's pretty clear that he's just tired of the series and wants to do something new. And I really wish he would. I'd rather have no Metal Gear than a Metal Gear without an excited Kojima at the helm.

As far as I'm concerned, MGS4 was the end of the series. It wrapped everything up, everyone was happy (relatively speaking), and it was just that, and end.

Korten12:

I agree. The original plan for it to be an interquel connecting 2 and 4 was better. We have yet to find out how Raiden rescued Sunny from the Patriots for instance.

Well...yeah. He didn't want to make another Metal Gear game after Snake Eater, but people were actually sending him death threats demanding that he did. That's why everyone is dead, dying, or dies in MGS4; out of spite.

Not sure why he suddenly went back and announced MGS5, then started working on this game as well...

Got a dictionary entry for it? I couldn't find it anywhere.

Because god forbid the game about the super-powered roboninja guy in the series play differently from the game about the old human guy.

It seems like the thing that defines the Metal Gear series to me (heavy-handed philosophy about war mixed in with bursts of jaw-droppingly awesome violence) is still in the game so who really cares? You know, other than the fans who take any change to their golden cow as a sign of disrespect.

Raiden is involved, so why does everyone assume we're not being trolled?

Raiden is Kojima's trollface.

It's not a real word. HOWEVER, Urban Dictionary has an entry on it.

n: causing or inflicting damage in return for damage done to oneself. Combination of revenge and vengeance, a more profound and severe statement statement

-the act of gaining revenge at a rate of at least 2.54 times greater to that of standard revenge and 1.61 that of standard vengeance.

-considered to be an act of the most violent retaliation.

-while revenge is served cold and vengeance is served hot revengeance is often seen served with Cajun with a side of onion rings and often dumplings in the Orient

To all the people moaning about this change:

You are aware that Kojima Productions had quietly canceled this game because they couldn't figure out how to get it to work decently yes? Platinum came along and saved this title from non-existence and you all have balls to complain about it being ridiculous and over the top?

Bullshit.

This is the same guy who breakdances robots to death, stops a city sized battleship with one arm before getting crushed by it then fight a squad of soldiers with a sword in his mouth while having no arms and raining down lightning.

Seriously people, take off the fucking fanboy goggles.

I can't say anything about the stupid-sounding title. And Metal Gear's plot history has always been over-the-top bullshit, so I won't dare point that out about this game.

Honestly, I'm alright with this. Given how much of a badass Raiden was made out to be in MGS4, the very idea of that kind of action being captured with standard MGS gameplay is kinda inconceivable. I mean, swordplay in MGS2 was just not that great, if even that.

As for the gameplay change, even before it got "canceled," they made it clear from the start. The whole "Lightning Bolt Action" thing. Oh I get it, he's lightning. Oh snap.

They can pull off a Metal Gear game better than Kojima Productions can pull off a twitch action game. I actually got excited when rumors of Platinum's involvement first surfaced. Bayonetta was really good and Rising is going to be a better game than it would have otherwise been... well, if it hadn't been canceled.

This trailer... doesn't really look fun? (not a question, just unsure of the statement itself). ie, it is over-the-top action and that makes it look interesting... but the mere concept sounds so fucking retarded. Couldn't Kojima just makes this a movie? It seems like that is what this is wanting to be more than a game. Not to mention the subtitle brings tears of rage to my eyes.

Am I allowed to complain about this trailer looking over the top and ridiculous if I'm not a fanboy since I really haven't had much experience with the games at all? I mean, I've only played a bit of MGS1, so my opinion of the series is still non-existent... but even as an outsider to the series, even I can see how terrible this game will probably turn out. Maybe the project should have been scrapped for something else.

^^^^THIS^^^^^

This game honestly looks amazing, and they're not calling it a Metal Gear Solid game, Snake isn't the main, so why not have some fun with the samurai-cyborg?

This looks like an interesting game, that is for sure. I'll watch this one. I love the Metal Gear universe. All the Solid games have been fantastic, and I liked the over the top shit that happened with Raiden in the last installment. I'll watch it, and I hope they just don't waste our time with PSmove or Kinect bullshit for the game.

Fun fact: I hit the comments link, and then had the enough time to read the article 1.5 times before it actually came here. I'm very disappointed with the "new technology" of the Escapist.

Edit: What is with that sub title. They make it sound like a sequel to Metal Gear Rising. They should have stuck with plain old Metal Gear Rising.

I could not think of a developer that are so talented yet so unsuited to the Metal Gear brand as Platinum games.

This does NOT deserve the Metal Gear name.

Also, PC version has been dropped and the release date put back indefinitely. Right.

Hey, we ALL HATED THAT in MGS4.

Don't think that somehow the excesses of MGS4 excuse the even further excesses here!

We fell in love with Metal Gear when it was you fighting against a giant bi-pedal nuclear tank with just a stinger-missile launcher. Grey Fox turned up for a bit and got shot down and crushed into red goo. You persevered by guile and tenacity, not magically making the enemy as light and fragile as Styrofoam because "oooh, Raiden has to be badass now".

Raiden was an unlikable git and REMAINS an unlikable git. Only now he is in high heels, with hot-topic ninja-outfit and like a ninja-hipster uses a sword instead of a gun. Snake did fine with a gun.

Again, get this clear, the die hard Metal Gear fans HATE RAIDEN! They more than just wish he would go away, they wish he never even existed. There is fan-fiction out there that utterly writes him out of the Metal Gear story.

MGS1, MGS3 and Peace Walker, now THOSE were proper Metal Gear games. MGS2 and MGS4 were ponderous tripe. MGS4 only tied up the loose ends of MGS2 that didn't so much have loose ends as and entire third act that defies any kind of logic, consistency or even dramatic purpose. Aka: wankery.

The problem is this is NOT change, this is MORE of the same bullshit he have seen since 2001 and after 10 years WE STILL DO NOT WANT ANY RAIDEN! Go away. I can't stand him AS A CHARACTER! Making him a cyborg ninja would have been a good move if:
-there was a REASON he ended up chopped up as a ninja
-he shut up and never ever said another word. Ever.
-His cyborg exoskeleton didn't look so trite. The exposed stylised hair, the translucent lip, the impractical eyepatch. WTF?! Less is more! He is wearing the Hot-Topic of cyborg-ninja exoskeletons!
-he served a purpose in the plot, unfortunately he has been barely relevant from the start

His back story: "hurr, you were apparently a child soldier in Africa that we shall mention just once in a fading photo montage and monologue exposition. Even though it seems your voice actor was told to present your character as a spoiled rich white boy who constantly bitches and yet folds like a bitch to your nagging girlfriend, and also utterly be inept in combat. Yeah, supposedly 'Jack The Ripper' needs to be saved by Snake within 15 minutes of the game starting."

And yeah, how fucking low do you have to go to exploit CHILD SOLDIERING as a back story to explain how weird and dysfunctional Raiden is.

Raiden doesn't act traumatised form childhood war exploitation, he acts pretentious and with posing self-aggrandisement. Snake acts more like he was exploited as a child soldier.

On Raiden:
He came off to me as the Every Guy that was kind of pushed into being a soldier for reasons that aren't revealed until the end of the game. He never seemed all that whiny. His girlfriend was a whiny, annoying bitch and the colonel was a jackass, but the reasons for that are all revealed toward the end. Hell, you even find out the Raiden isn't Mr. Every Guy after all. He essentially had his mental health thrown out a window at a very young age. The fact that he still ended up being a 'good guy' managed to be a point of amazement for me.
It also adds to his apparent turn to being a psycho in Rising, for me. I can see how this guy could have absolutely snapped and reverted to this machine of war that he was trained to be.

I actually like Raiden.
Is he Snake (Naked or Solid)?
No. Few people are.
However, he's still a very viable character that I like to follow.

EDIT: Oh, and dude above me, the project was cancelled until Platinum Games picked it up. So the release date was moved from never to sometime in the future.

Metal Gear Gaiden: Rise of Raiden

Looking forward to it

Exclamation points must be appearing above the heads of Metal Gear fans throughout their respective nations. Change is not always a bad thing though, it could be a much better movie than the last one. *bah-zing*

Platinum Games are fucking flawless....so far. I have complete faith in them that they'll pull off something amazing.

That was far too cheesy. I feel ill now.
