Japanese Censors: Sexually Aggressive Women Turn Kids Gay

I love living in the BENELUX, we are so liberated by comparison (often, anyway).
It's this kinda silliness that makes me appreciate my life and what I have.

anyway, if a society assumes that women won't have sex on their own accord except when they're crazy is a tad insulting to both parties involved, no?

Those notes from that meeting rule. I never realized that women actively wanting to have sex with men is what made men gay!

Obviously, the only properly heterosexual solution involves judicious use of that r-word that Japanese media seems so fond of depicting. Nothing violent, illegal or immoral about that one after all.

Oh, and [/sarcasm], in case anybody was wondering.

At first, I looked at this with amusement - 'Awwww, old people being comically offensive. How adorable!'

Then I read the article and realized that they actually have a great deal of power. Well, shit. It's like somebody put our racist grandma in charge of who gets affirmative action scholarships.

It's Japan.
Nothing to be surprised about here.

SoetSout:
lol so according to him, all men that plays the lead sexual roll can turn woman into lesbians?...

what an idiot...

Not to say that I agree with them, but the person who acts as if men and women are interchangeable shouldn't be calling others Idiots.

Back in 2010 Japan signed into law a bill that allows the government to censor, via a committee vote, media that "promotes illegal or immoral sexual activity." The law is almost exclusively invoked against manga; particularly "Loli" manga, which often depicts child-like characters in erotic situations.

In case some people didn't read the previous article; this isn't actually a "censorship law" that entirely prevents producing/selling "immoral" material, but a law that allows the government to put a R-18 stamp on everything they deem not fit for "children". F.ex. if a manga series was found "immoral" (even non erotic one, like Kodomo no Jikan) it would be sold from "hard porn" shelves and put in plastic bags to prevent minors browsing them.

But still it's a horrible law supervised by horribly old men.

A culture where porn ranges from 'she was asking for it' to 'raped by demons' objects to women taking the lead in sexual encounters?!

Shocking.

Fuck censorship. Seriously. It comes from stupidity and all it does is bring more of it.

Hooray for arbitrary censorship commities. My children are safe from the terrors of homosexuality and strong, confident women all thanks to you.

Agh. Why do we have to live as slaves to the whims of idiots like this?

Can I just say "Oh, Japan...", because that's all that needs to be said.

(Not that we're any better, but I'll put money on it that Japan has a "Oh, England" column as well)

Aureliano:

Yeah I think there's a way for me to make money in there somewhere. /sarcasm.

But seriously while I can understand them wanting to censor more extreme porn in a reserved society their reasoning and selection seems (offensively so) way off base.

I think it's easy for the internet generation to forget they are still being watched over or governed by people who grew up in the 40's and 50's...

I'm very concerned about censorship and all that. but please someone tell me what manga that picture is from. I don't care if its the worst manga ever, but I'll read it just to figure out what the hell is going on in that picture.

I don't think the guy who said this represents the whole of Japan, people.

If I was a woman living in Japan I probably wouldn't want to have sex of my own accord either.

Fawxy:
I really want to know the story behind that picture though. It's hilarious.

Me too. I don't understand the picture. Is is a Japan gay test or something?

"You are presented with a topless, bespectacled man. Two kittens are attached to his chest by way of a piece of tape/strap. He looks at you sugestively, a wide grin on his face. How do you handle this situation?"

1. Run away, fast. (Recommended action)
2. Try to save the defenceless kittens! (We advise against)
3. Have full sexual intercourse with the man because you just read manga involving sexually forward women. (Warning: You could be gay as a result of overbearing women)

Hmm I think this is a trick question... If your response is number 3, then I think you were gay long before you were even exposed to women.

What? Oh there was a news story here? o.O

Not only comedy gold, but further evidence that it is possible for an individual to be so clueless that they cease to even be offensive. Committee Member A, I wish I could shake your hand. You won't understand why, but I want to do it anyway.

Casual Shinji:
If I was a woman living in Japan I probably wouldn't want to have sex of my own accord either.

That seems a little harsh! Japan has plenty of forward-thinking (and attractive) guys.

(Oh, and sympathy-in-advance for anyone who's favourite Manga gets censored by this committee.)

Leave it to the Japanese to make even a subject I can honestly say I despise, namely the censorship of media, speech or expression, so incredibly insane I had to check to make sure I was still on the same -planet.-

hahaha, that guys logic is just hilarious. Wish I could have been there when he said it, of course I wouldn't have understood but it would have made me laugh a lot.
Too bad that idiots like that guy get positions where they have some power.

Oh Japan, you so silly.

And I would also like to take this opportunity to point out that the man in the picture for this article is showing his kitties. Tsk tsk, Escapist, I thought you were more mature than that.

Japan, a country led by very old men, with pretty stupid views.
But isn't it kinda ironic that one of those bills got supported by someone who wrote rape-novels?
(can't remember the name right now)

To quote one of dozens of similar comments:

"Why is Japan doing this??"

JAPAN is not doing this. A GUY is doing this. Granted this guy is a product of Japanese culture. But so are 127 million other Japanese people, each of whom is a person with his or her own personality, none of which are precisely identical despite the stereotype.

"JAPAN" is not some monolithic hive-mind. There's one guy in Miyazaki Prefecture (a tiny, mostly rural "state" tucked away in the far south of Japan...the size and population of a couple of American counties) who thinks this way. There are probably a few million others who have similar ridiculous opinions, but most Japanese people would find his views as appalling as most of us do.

And how many millions of Americans think that homosexuality is caused by dominant women? How many Canadians? Dave Sim, the writer of Cerberus, one of the greatest comic books ever, thinks so. Most North Americans who've read his wacky views rightfully think he's a nutcase. Do they say, "Why is Canada doing this??" No. They think, "Why did such a great comic creator turn into such a homophobic, misogynistic creep?"

Why is a Canadian or an American opinion an individual's opinion, but a minor Japanese functionary's opinion is suddenly JAPAN's opinion?

And for the several people who wrote variations on "This is why I hate Japan": Stop being idiots. I could understand such a sentiment if you were, say, Japanese and complaining about your own culture, or if you were Chinese or Korean and your country had been invaded and terribly harmed by Japan, or if you were an 80-year-old Pacific War vet. But even those people should get the hell over it. Americans should remember that Japan is one of America's closest and most loyal allies. It is far from a perfect country, and it has crimes to answer for in its history...but name me a country that is perfect. Name me a country that is free from an ugly past.

I think you are all missing the point here. The problem the committee members have is that there actually aren't that many women who would openly express their sexuality and "take the lead". So by having such women in most relationship related manga and anime, male teens start to expect such women to come on to them. Think about it - I read manga almost every day and I can't think of one where the male teenage protagonist goes after his love interest openly and isn't branded a pervert. Imagine actually growing up with such role models. In a country where most marriages are between people of ages 20-25, more and more males turn 25 without ever even kissing a girl. So you turn 25 without ever having a relationship with a girl an you practically have two options - turn gay in pursuit of happiness or kill yourself(Japan is in the top 5 countries by suicide rate). Both of those aren't helping in a country with a serious demographic deficit

Does... does this mean that manga is a socially progressive force in japan? I think I might have gained a higher respect for the medium.

I lost my taste for reading manga and watching anime a year or 2 ago due to seemingly cookie cutter concepts, characters and plot. Though I do dip in and out every so often to try and catch the rare gems that stumble into that pool of bland.

The sexually and socially delicate female character was endearing at first due to being raised in a time where the western media tries to "empower" women by basically making them more masculine or making them into cold and heartless bitches or just cock hungry nymphs. The delicate flower character type soon became tedious and flat, whiles my view on women became less conformed and more free formed (judge each person as an individual, not a group overall).

But I can't deny that some Manga and Anime also tried to empower women and did a better job at it then western media on occasion. I like the idea of Manga being a socially inquisitive medium. It gives it a flare that renders it more Artistically then any amount of panty shots or bizarre boob physics could ever possibly achieve.

... and par to the course, the powers that be will try and stunt social progression because it meddles with their conformed ideals. Hopefully this eejit won't be enough of a force to stunt social evolution.

Okay, I'm sure you meant that as a deliberate jest, but I can't be too sure since this is the internet. But turning gay isn't exactly an option, unless your Bi.

Also, I'm 23, never been kissed and have no sexual stirrings towards men... I'm fucked in this case right?

...what? =/

No, seriously, what?

Maybe I'm not reading this right, correct me if I'm wrong: They want to ban pornography featuring women who do anything other than just sit back, because they're afraid it'll be used to manufacture homosexuals?

I don't think there's anyone this isn't offensive to.

Xiado:
Ugh, another example of why I hate Japanese society. This is yet another facet of the sexist mindset that sex is an activity to be enjoyed by the man only, and that a woman "gives" her body to the man as some selfless sacrifice. No wonder that their society is so sexually repressed, if it refuses to admit that sex is a mutual partnership rather than a one-sided act. It's times like this that make me think that the US isn't really that bad after all.

My wife is Japanese, and she hasn't "given" her body to me in quite some time. I call foul.

Worgen:

Its hardly all of japan that is like that, really most societies have a view of women that is they are beneath a man, hell, even after the sexual revolution women are still struggling to get equal rights and they still regularly earn less then men, feminist is practically a 4 letter word since conservatives have done such a good job of demonizing it. Plus its not reasonable people that get assigned to things like this, its the more conservative and weird elements that get put on things like this.

I can't speak for everyone, but from my perspective, feminism has gotten its current bad name from the outspoken, hardcore, man-hating, feminazi bitches that we keep hearing about. Never run into one myself, so I have a feeling they aren't as common as the internet makes them seem. Classic feminism notion of equality? All for it, as long as it's really equality that they want.

Actually the manhating feminazi bitches tend to mostly be an invention of said rightwing groups as a way to turn the word feminist into a 4 letter one, really your just falling for it, if there is one thing the right is really good at re-defining words.

AstylahAthrys:
I honestly haven't seen something that out-of-touch in a very long time. I think the last thing I saw was that horrible Rick Perry ad that popped up awhile back. Oi vey.

You forgot Rick Santorum who got booed off stage for calling gay marriage equal to polygamy. >.<

Oh, great now the Japanese gov are getting in on the managa and anime hating act. If you are a fan of this medium, you already run the risk of being labeled a deviant (if not worse), as all managa is about school girls being raped, right. Now you also run the risk of being labeled as gay as well, for liking the non rape, women in charge depictions.

When are people going to get this through their heads. They are drawings, they are not real, they are not going to convert someone into something they you are not already. So placing restrictions on them for 'public safety' is just wrong. In the same way that killing loads of people in video games is not going to turn you into a murder, unless you were one already. But of course people always have a different 'logic' when it comes to things involving sex rather than violence.

As far as what it says about Japan. I think it just says that the old, misogynistic and in Government men there, have some issues with / fear of strong women who are comfortable with expressing themselves sexually (my favorite kind, btw). That says more about the people in government in Japan rather than managa.

Can't wait for the people who have grown up with Managa to get into power.

Grey Carter:

Back in 2010 Tokyo signed into law a bill that allows the government to censor, via a committee vote, media that "promotes illegal or immoral sexual activity."

Corrected it for you. The statute only applies to Tokyo, as it was passed by the local Tokyo government.

I think they are confusing sexual submissiveness with homosexuality, even though uke and seme exist in both heterosexual and homosexual (both gender versions) hentai.

*sigh* Japan, calm down will you?

This is from the country whose citizens read porn on the train and came up with the words "yaoi" and "yuri" and the entire subculture therein?

I am always amazed at how inconsistent Japan is with their culture.

...Sorry, not following the logic here. Damn sexists...

No kidding, this article quickly turned into a reason for every shithead to vent some really disturbing bigotry towards Japan. This kinda stuff makes me feel like we're back in the 40s with every non-Asian getting dangerously close to saying "them squinty-eyed Japs."

Umm....
if anything the minutes show that its the CENSORS who are "prejudiced."

And seriously... what the fuck?
Have they been living under rocks this whole time?
Grow up you morons.

(Not that we're any better, but I'll put money on it that Japan has a "Oh, England" column as well)

You are completely right. Japan has in now way cornered the market on illogical laws on material of a sexual nature.

In the UK you can go out and pick up a 16 years old and do with them, whatever they will consent to. If you have a drawing of a 16 year old doing what you could have legally done with a real 16 year old, that's it you are put on a register. Also if you download media of the 16 year old, that is classed under UK law as 'making' indecent / prohibited media. That is not in anyway misleading, making out like you created it.

Or that porn for 16 year olds is illegal, but having sex with real women is not. Isn't that a bit like getting people to learn to drive when they have never seen a car before. Which country had the highest teen pregnancy rate in Europe again, oh yeah right...

In the UK it is also now illegal to have media of acts of extreme S&M. That is unless you can prove you were there to witness the act when it was recorded. That's right the act it's self is not illegal, just any media products from it unless you were there to witness it with your own eyes.

Also a big no no is any sexual activity with animals and depictions there of, because obviously it is cruel to the animal and they cannot consent (and yuck). Never mind that we kill millions of them a year to feed us (yes, I'm a vegetarian). It does not strike anyone as inconsistent that it is OK to show depictions of animals being killed, mutilated or any other indignity, by humans, but anything sexual.... If I was an animal I know which I would pick, between death and rape.

I find all the above as yucky as anyone else (so not interested in picking up 16 year olds thank you), but that does not mean the illogic to the above legislation should not be pointed out. People tend to legislate from the gut rather than the head, when it comes to anything involving sex. So as I said before Japan in no way has the market cornered when it comes to illogic and crazy when it comes to legislating on this issue. There is plenty of finger pointing to go around.

If you ask me feminism has gotten it's current bad name because the name itself should be changed at this point. It should be something that actually looks like it supports rights for both genders. As the amazing atheist said : (I'm paraphrasing a bit, and I thought the same thing before the video came out), 'saying you're going to call your group feminists but you'll advocate for men's rights when relevant is like saying white power but you'll fight for black rights when relevant. ' Even if you're telling the truth, there has to be some label that actually works and doesn't look like you're going to favor one side as a favorite.
